Daniel Wallingford
M, b. circa 1825, d. before his wife died in 1902
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Daniel Wallingford was born circa 1825 in Lebanon, York County, MaineG. (Based on the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Lebanon, Maine.) Chamberlain only speculates that he belongs in this family. Shackford listed him with the unconnected branches of the family. He clearly belongs somewhere in the muddied Lebanon branch of the family, and his presence here as son of Daniel should not be considered any kind of proof of relationship. But since his 'father' is unconnected as well, they can remain together for the time being.1,2 |
Marriage* | He married first Jane Wallingford, daughter of William B. Wallingford and Joanna Pierce, on 6 August 1847 in Berwick, York County, MaineG. They were both living in Berwick when they got married. Their relationship cannot be determined at present because Daniel's family hasn't been connected to the immigrant line yet.3 |
Marriage* | He married second?, Abigail F. Jacobs, on 29 March 1868, in Sanford, York County, MaineG.4,5 |
Death* | Daniel Wallingford died before his wife died in 1902. She was said to be a widow on her death record. |
| In the 1850 census of Lebanon Daniel was a 25-year old farmer born in Maine and living on a small piece of land worth $130. Living with him was Jane, 24, born Maine who is presumably his wife and Nancy, age 6 born in Maine, who is presumably a daughter. In 1860 Daniel and Jane were still living in Lebanon, and Daniel's occupation was given as "farm laborer". His real property was worth $50 and his personal property $40, which indicates that the family was quite poor.6
In 1870 Daniel is found in Lebanon living with his second wife Abigail F. His age was given as 40, born in Maine, when our Daniel should have been 45, and next door is the family of Charles and Clarissa Jacobs. Abigail was only 18 years old and they had a child Lucy A. Wallingford, aged 9 months, living with them.
Shackford makes no mention of a second wife and states that Daniel's wife Jane died 9 April 1902 in Rochester. This death record should be checked to see if she is the same person. Perhaps they divorced, or she was married to a different Wallingford. Shackford does say that Lucy A. Wallingford was the daughter of Daniel and Abby (Jacobs) Wallingford, and his information may have come from Lucy's marriage certificate.7 Shackford also places a daughter Nancy Jane in this family, born between William and Harriet, then on the next page calls her Jane and her age at death would have her born in 1844 when their first child Nancy was born.8 We will assume them to be one and the same and that Nancy either had the middle name of Jane or took the name of Jane later in life.
In the Nov 1903 record of their daughter Lucy's second marriage, where it recorded her parents, it said that Daniel resided in Sanford, Maine while Abbie was living in Springvale, Maine. So perhaps they were divorced at this time? |

Nancy (Jane?) Wallingford
F, b. 24 January 1844, d. 27 February 1909
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Nancy (Jane?) Wallingford was born on 24 January 1844 in Rochester, Strafford County, New HampshireG. Place of birth is from her daughter Ida's death record. Nancy was age 6 in the 1850 census and 19 in the 1860 census. Her birthdate is calculated from her age at death. She appears to have been born before her parents were married. |
Marriage* | She married Atlas B. Howard on 30 March 1862 in Strafford, Strafford County, New HampshireG.1 |
Death* | Nancy died on 27 February 1909 in Rochester, Strafford County, New HampshireG.1 |
| Shackford calls her Nancy in one place, then adds a "sister" Nancy Jane and follows her with just plain Jane.2 I believe they are all the same person and perhaps Nancy went by Jane later in life. On her daughter Annie's birth certificate and her daugher Ida's death certificate she is referred to as "N.J." Their daughter Annie was their 6th child according to the source for her birth record, so other children are still missing at this point. |

Charlotte Wallingford
F, b. circa 1832
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Charlotte Wallingford was born circa 1832 in Lebanon, York County, MaineG. She was 18 in the 1850 census.1 |
Marriage* | She married Ebenezer Wallingford, son of Unconnected Individuals, after 8 December 1852. They filed their intention in Lebanon and Berwick, Maine on that date. Ebenezer was from Berwick and Charlotte was from Lebanon at the time. When and where (and if) they were actually married is unknown at present.2,3 |
| She appears in the family of Stephen and Mercy Wallingford in the 1850 census of Lebanon, Maine as an 18-year old, born in Maine.4 She is listed at the end of the family, after several other children aged 2 through 16, so it's possible that she was from a different Wallingford family and only boarding there. Her age of 18 would have her being born before her parents' marriage, which is another indication that she may belong elsewhere. |

Levina Wallingford
F, b. about 1836-39
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Levina Wallingford was born about 1836-39, probably in Lebanon, York County, MaineG.1 |
Marriage* | She married James Goodwin (intention) 3 September 1859 in Somersworth, Strafford County, New HampshireG. She was "of Lebanon" and he was "of Wells", Maine.2 |
| Her parentage comes from the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Lebanon, Maine. The statement that she married James Goodwin is based on pure guesswork and needs much more research. The evidence, flimsy as it is, is based on the presence of James and Lovina Goodwin in the 1860 census of Farmington, N.H.3. Lovina is 23 in that census, which is the correct age, but there is also a Eunice Wallingford, age 20, living with them, and Eunice is the correct age to be the Lebanon Levina's sister. Both were born in Maine according to the census. The fact that they were recorded in the 1860 census of both Lebanon and Farmington is irrelevant. That often happened when the informant for a census record was a non-family member who might not have realized that two of the daughters had moved away recently. She was no longer with her parents in the 1870 census of Lebanon. Her husband James Goodwin was probably married once before, as in the 1860 census he has two apparent children living with him: William1H., age 9 born in N.H., and Caroline E., age 5, born in Mass. These two were born before he married Lovina so are probably from a first wife, assuming they are actually his children and not just younger siblings, a niece and nephew, or other relation. |

Giles Wallingford
M, b. about 1845-48
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Giles Wallingford was born about 1845-48, probably in Lebanon, York County, MaineG. He was 2 in the 1850 census, yet in the 1860 census he was 15 and older than his brother Tappin. One censustaker apparently had them confused. Chamberlain's "Lebanon Genealogies" says that his brother Tappin was born 12 October 1845, which is surely based on information taken from the account book of Dr. Samuel W. Jones of Lebanon, which contained records of 100 births in town. It records the birth of a child of Stephen Wallingford on that date. Chamberlain apparently only consulted the 1850 census for his work, so seeing that Tappin was 4 in that census assumed that he must be the child born on that date. He never saw the reversal of their ages in the 1860 census, so in reality this birth date could apply to either Tappin or to Giles. Further research is needed.1,2 |
| He may be the Giles Wallingford, age 18, a resident of Somersworth, N.H. who enlisted during the Civil War on 21 October 1861, and was mustered into the 7th N.H. Regiment, Co. D, on November 6th as a private. This Giles deserted on 1 November 1862.3 If he is one in the same then he likely lied about his age on his military enlistment application, which may explain his later desertion. He wasn't living with his parents in the 1870 census. |

Giles Wallingford
M, b. circa 1825, d. probably by July 1860
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Giles Wallingford was born circa 1825 in Lebanon, York County, MaineG. (Calculated from the 1850 census.)1 |
Marriage* | He married first Malinda Wallingford, daughter of Jonathan Wallingford and Rachel Knox, on 14 July 1850 in Berwick, York County, MaineG. Their marriage intention was filed in Lebanon, Maine on 27 January 18492 and in Berwick, Maine the next day.3 Giles was from Lebanon and Melinda from Berwick at the time they were married. They may have ended up getting divorced soon after the wedding since Giles married again six months later, and a year and a half before Melinda died.4 |
Marriage* | He married second Margaret Ann Bean, who may be the daughter of John Bean and Ann (?), on 15 January 1851 in Somersworth, Strafford County, New HampshireG.1 |
Death* | Giles died probably by July 1860.5 |
| Giles' place in the genealogy is unknown, but it is very likely that he is a member of the currently confused Lebanon, Maine branch of the family that descends from John Wallingford and Lydia Garland. John and Lydia moved from Rochester, N.H. to Lebanon, Maine in the decade before the Revolutionary War and had several sons, each of whom had several sons of their own. Giles is probably their great-grandson or great-great grandson.
In the 1850 census of Somersworth, N.H. Giles, a 25-year old labourer born in Maine, and Malinda, 22, born Maine, are living in the household of Samuel and Ann (Wallingford) Randall. Also with them is a Martha J. Wallingford, 16, born in Maine, who may be a sister of Giles. It is probably likely that Ann (Wallingford) Randall is the sister of either Giles or his wife Malinda, but it is has thus far not been possible to determine the relationship.
The names of their two children come from a document handed down by a family member with a family heirloom sugar bowl. This note was written by the wife of Roland Wallingford, who was the son of George. The note reads:
"This Mulberry sugar bowl belonged to the mother of Margaret Ann Bean who was married to Giles Wallingford. Said Margaret had two children, namely, George and Malinda.
"George Wallingford married Sarah Kincaid. They had a family of eight children, the eldest daughter was Edna who married Marshal Yokell.
"This sugar bowl and pitcher is to be given to Phyllis Allen a daughter of Edna Wallingford Yokell.
The Mulberry Sugar Bowl
"In the olden days sugar was a luxury and was used only when guests were present or on special occasions. It was hoarded carefully.
"One day when the grandparents of George and Malinda Wallingford were absent, the children, who made their home with their grandparents, decided that they would help themselves to some sugar. Taking a spoon, they climbed to the cupboard where the Mulberry sugar bowl was kept. Malinda being the girl reached in and took the first spoonful. Alas! The grandmother had anticipated what might happen and had filled the sugar bowl with Epsom salts. They never got in the sugar bowl again."
George and Malinda were living with a Bean family, presumably their grandparents, in the 1860 census of Mercer, Maine. George, age 7, and Malinda, age 5, were both said to have been born in New Hampshire. They were in the household of John and Ann Bean, and also living with them was 25-year-old Ann Wallingford (spelled Walingford in the census) who is likely their mother. This would indicate that Giles either died or they were divorced at some point before the census was taken on 5 July 1860.6,7,8 |

As it states in the note, when Edna died it was passed on to her niece Phyllis Allen of Wales, Maine, daughter of Marshall and Edna (Wallingford) Yokell, where it resides in 2004. It probably went to her because she and her husband used to visit Aunt Edna and no one else did. Phyllis Allen has promised to pass it on to her daughter Edna Grace Wallingford (Allen) Thomas.
