Elijah Osgood
M, b. 27 March 1740 or May 1740, d. December 1822
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Elijah Osgood was born on 27 March 1740 or May 1740 in Lancaster, Worcester County, MassachusettsG. The record of his birth wasn't found in the published vital records of Lancaster, but Elijah, son of Benjamin Osgood was baptized there on 23 January 1739/40.12,3 |
Marriage* | He married Mary Wallingford, daughter of Ezekiel Wallingford and Lydia Brown, on 19 November 1760 in Lancaster, Worcester County, MassachusettsG. They were both of Lancaster at the time of their marriage.4 |
Death* | Elijah died in December 1822 in Swanzey, Cheshire County, New HampshireG.5 |
| Elijah marched to Springfield upon the alarm of 1757.6 The alarm of 1757 must have something to do with the French and Indian War that was taking place at the time. They moved from Lancaster, Mass. to Swanzey, N.H. sometime between the birth of their daughter Submit in April 1763 and the baptism of their son Elijah in January 1768 (when they were referred to as "of Swanzy"). He was dismissed to "ye Chh of Christ in Swanzey" in 1769.7 |

M, b. 21 March 1765?, d. 23 March 1847
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Elijah Osgood was born on 21 March 1765?, possibly in Swanzey, Cheshire County, New HampshireG. The Osgood genealogy says that he was "born 21 Mar. 1761, or according to history of Swanzey, 1765". The History of Swanzey does indeed give a date of 21 March 1765.1 Neither his birth nor his baptism appear in the published records of Lancaster, and Swanzey records haven't been checked yet. The 1761 date was one year after his parents' marriage, so is certainly possible, and the 1765 date falls neatly between the dates of birth of his sister Submit in 1763 and his brother Ezekiel in 1767, so that is certainly possible as well. The 1765 date seems more likely as the Swanzey book includes all the birth dates for the Osgood children except Submit, whose birth is recorded in Lancaster. It seems likely that he got his data from Swanzey records.2 |
Marriage* | He married Elizabeth Thompson, daughter of Roger Thompson and Elizabeth (?), on 16 October 1788 in Swanzey, Cheshire County, New HampshireG. According to the history of Swanzey this was Elizabeth's second marriage.34,5 |
Death* | Elijah died on 23 March 1847 in Almond, Allegany County, New YorkG.2 |
| Elijah was a carpenter and joiner, and moved from Swanzey to Sullivan, N.H., then to Almond, N.Y. in 1810. They had eight children.6 |

Birth* | David Tate was born on 24 June 1769, probably in Somersworth, New HampshireG. The family record kept by schoolmaster Joseph Tate, who was also Robert's father, gives the date as "Sunday June 24, 1767 1769", with both dates given in the original record. As his parents were married in 1767 it seems that 1769 would be the correct date, but in neither year was June 24th a Sunday. It was a Wednesday in 1767 and a Saturday in 1769.1 |

John D. Wallingford
M, b. circa 1810, d. 26 February 1888
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | John D. Wallingford was born circa 1810 in MaineG. (Date based on 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses of Farmington, N.H. The 1860 census said he was born in N.H. while the others said Maine.) |
Marriage* | He married Susan Wallingford, daughter of Tobias Wallingford and Marion Corson, on 16 June 1833 in Lebanon, York County, MaineG. She was of Alton, N.H. at the time of their marriage and he was from Lebanon.1 |
Death* | John died on 26 February 1888 in Farmington, Strafford County, New HampshireG. Shackford claims that it was John, son of Aaron who died in Farmington on this date2, but it is more likely to be the John who lived in Farmington 1850 through 1870, rather than the John from Lebanon in 1850.3 |
| His connection to the genealogy is unknown, but it is not unlikely that he was from one of the many Wallingford families in Lebanon, Maine. Lebanon genealogist George Walter Chamberlain claims that this John and Susan were living in Lebanon at the time of the 1850 census4 , but I believe that is a different John and Susan. This John and Susan appear in the Farmington censuses from 1850-1870 and are both ten or eleven years younger than the Lebanon couple. The John and Susan who married in Lebanon in 1833 are very likely the couple who later moved to Farmington, because based on the ages of their children in the 1850 census it couldn't be the Lebanon couple. In addition, the marriage record says Susan was from Alton, N.H., which would put them closer to Farmington. Susan's father Tobias was originally from Lebanon as well so John and Susan are likely first or second cousins.
There is a Civil War record for a John D. Wallingford that may or may not be him. The age given would be for someone born in 1818, but this person was from Farmington and, according to the war record, died in Farmington on 4 March 1888, only a few days off from the death date of our John D. The Civil War record states that he was born in Lebanon, and enlisted from Farmington on 15 August 1862 in the 10th N.H. Regiment, Company I. He was mustered as a private on 4 September 1862 and won a disability discharge on 16 November 1863 in Hampton, Virginia.5
John and Susan Wallingford appear in the 1850 census of Farmington, N.H., with a daughter Martha [J.?], aged 16, born in Maine. In this census John, a farmer born in Maine is 40 and Susan, also born in Maine, is 42.6 Ten years later we have John D., 50, and Susan, 52, Wallingford still in Farmington, yet this time it says they were born in N.H. With them is living a Lola A. Hill, age 3, born in N.H.7 This Lola may be a grandchild, but relationships aren't recorded in the 1860 census. In 1870 they are still in Farmington. John D. is 60, born in Maine, and Susan is 62 born in N.H. With them now is Hortense Hill, age 9, born in N.H. Clearly some relationship to a Hill family seems likely. |

| She may be the Martha J. Wallingford of Lebanon, Maine who married on 18 May 1851 in Farmington, N.H., John E. Keniston or Kennerson of Alton, N.H.1,2 It may also be the "other" Martha J., daughter of the "other" John and Susan Wallingford. There is much confusion in these two families due to their various appearances in census records, and they may, in fact, be the same family. There is even another Martha J. Wallingford, this time in the 1850 census of Somersworth, aged 16, born in Maine and living with the family of Samuel and Ann (Wallingford) Randall.3 |
