Birth* | Richard Needham Wallingford was born on 31 January 1877 in Ayer, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.1 |
Marriage* | He married Maud Ellen Knight, daughter of Edward Knight and Marion Buott, on 17 October 1900 in Waltham, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG. When they were married Richard worked in watchmaking and they were both living in Waltham.2 |
Death* | Richard died on 15 May 1966. His death date comes from the Social Security Death Index, and his last residence has what appears to be a Florida zip code (33505) but it is not in the Post Office's online zip code database. |
| They have not been located in the 1910 census, but in 1920 they were living in Waltham. Maud's parents were living with them, as well as two other Knights whose ages suggest that they may be her siblings. Richard was an optician with his own shop and they lived in a rented apartment at 562 Main St. They did not have any children listed with them.3 They were at the same address in the 1930 census. Maud's sister Florence N. Knight was living with them. Richard's occupation was as an optometrist.4 He was at the same address when he was the informant on his mother's death certificate in May 1924. |

Abigail Saunders
F, b. 16 April 1752
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Abigail Saunders was born on 16 April 1752 in Rowley, Essex County, MassachusettsG. She was baptized on April 19th. The published Rowley vital records also show a birth for an Abigail Saunders, daughter of Edward and Abigail, being born on April 16, 1754. This is either a different family entirely, a typo for 1752 (the most likely explanation) or they had a second Abigail born exactly two years later, with no death record for the first in evidence.1 |
| Tate's Diary records an Abigail Saunders, born 20 June 1749, who married Stephen Austin on 12 July 1772.2,3 Given the different birth date it appears to be a different Abigail Sa[u]nders, but as nothing is known of Abigail's life after her birth, it could very well be the same person. |

Stephen Austin
M
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Stephen Austin was born. |
| Stephen Austin was apparently a Quaker because the diary of Joseph Tate refers to him as "Friend Stephen Austin". Knowing that, it may be him that is recorded as a child of Samuel Austin and Abigail Pinkham in the Records of the Dover Monthly Quaker Meeting. In that record it states that their children were born in Somersworth, and that Stephen was born 3, 10 mo. 1754 and "disowned" 20, 2 mo. 1773.1 It seems plausible that he would be disowned by his church after he married outside the church the previous year.
Stephen Austin is enumerated in the 1790 census of Somersworth with one male over 16 (presumably himself), 2 males under 16, and five females. [1790 census, N.H., Strafford Co., Somersworth, published version, p.99. ] In 1800 he is still in Somersworth, this time with two males 16-25, one male over 44, one female 10-15, two females 16-25, and two females 26-44. This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Lydia Saunders was born on 5 April 1749 in Rowley, Essex County, MassachusettsG.1,2 |
Marriage* | She married Jonathan Story, son of Jacob Story and Mary Butler, on 31 December 1772 in Rowley, Essex County, MassachusettsG. He was from Ipswich and she was from Rowley when they were married.3 |
Death* | Lydia Saunders died of fever on 8 November 1784 in Chebacco Parish, Ipswich, Essex County, MassachusettsG.4 |
| Jonathan and Lydia had six children recorded in the published vital records of Ipswich, Chebacco Parish.5 The first of these died young and on the baptismal record of the last it states that she is the daughter of Capt. Jonathan and Lydia deceased. This baptism was six days after Lydia died, so probably she died due to a childbirth-related problem. Jonathan and his second wife died in Essex, Mass., but they likely never moved. Chebacco Parish, Ipswich, where they lived most of their lives, became the town of Essex in 1818. |

This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Mary Pearne was born circa 1761. (aged 29 at death.)1 |
Marriage* | She married Capt. Thomas Roach by November 1787. She was referred to as Mary Roach wife of Capt. Thomas Roach in her mother's will dated 15 November 1787.2 |
Death* | Mary died before 19 August 1790 in Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New HampshireG. "Mary, wife of Capt. Thomas Roach, aged 29, died in Portsmouth, N.H.", from the newspaper dated August 19.3 |
| "A child of Capt. Thomas Roach died in Portsmouth" (from the Dec. 21, 1793 issue of the New Hampshire Gazette.4 Thomas was involved in privateering during the Revolutionary War, and in 1782 was part owner of the brig Roxene.5 It therefore seems likely that he was much older than his wife Mary so may have been married before and had older children by a previous marriage. He appears in the 1790 census of Portsmouth with two males 16 and over (including himself) two under 16 and three females.6 |

Elizabeth Pearne
F, b. about 1767/68, d. 22 August 1808
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Elizabeth Pearne was born about 1767/68. (Based on age of 40 at death.)1 |
Marriage* | She married Joseph Low Jr., son of Joseph Low and Rachel Jackson, on 20 September 1789 in Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New HampshireG.2 |
Death* | Elizabeth died on 22 August 1808. She was buried in the North Cemetery in Portsmouth.34 |
| Her future husband Joseph Low, or perhaps his father, was one of the witnesses to her father's will on 26 September 1789. The 1790 census of Portsmouth shows both Joseph Low and Joseph, Jr., with the latter showing one adult male and two females5, so apparently he was married with a single daughter by that time. Two Joseph Lows once again appear in the 1800 census of Portsmouth. While neither is designated Jr., one has a male that is over 44 years of age that is likely the father. The other has two males under ten, one female aged 10-15, one female 16-25, and one adult male and female aged 26-44.6 They were also enumerated in the 1810 census of Portsmouth with one male 26-45, two females 26-45, one female 16-25, two males 16-25, one male 10-15, and one female under ten. Joseph and Elizabeth had at least six children, all listed in the NH Genealogical Record article used here in some footnotes about Joseph. He was a merchant in Portsmouth. |

John Wallingford
M, b. say 1802
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | John Wallingford was born say 1802 in MaineG. (He was 50 in the 1850 census of Lebanon, Maine, implying birth in 1800, but as his probable parents didn't marry until at least 1801, we will assume that to be incorrect. He may also belong to another Wallingford family entirely, of course.) |
Marriage* | He married, Susan (?), by 1824. (Based on the age of their oldest child in the 1850 census of Lebanon.) |
| Shackford says the son of Aaron was John O. Wallingford and says that he died in Farmington, N.H. on 26 February 1888. I believe that this is probably a different John, who was enumerated in the 1850-70 censuses of Farmington as John D. Wallingford, with wife Susan. Later censuses haven't been checked yet. It would be a simple error to read John D. as John O. Confusion arises because there are two John and Susan Wallingford couples at the same time in two diffreent towns. In the 1850 census of Lebanon, Maine a John and Susan Wallingford, aged 50 and 53 respectively, appear next door to Aaron. John was a farmer and included no real estate value so he may very well have been living with Aaron yet enumerated as the head of his own household.1 This is likely to be the son of Aaron, but with so many Wallingford families in this part of Lebanon it could very well be someone else. For the time being it will be assumed that this is the son of Aaron. The John D./John O. Wallingford appears in the 1850 census of Farmington, N.H., also with a wife Susan, but he is ten years younger than the Lebanon John, and his wife Susan 11 years younger than the Lebanon Susan.2 They appear together in the next two censuses of Farmington as well, while the Lebanon John and Susan don't again appear in Lebanon in either of the next two censuses. |

Henry Wallingford
M, b. circa June 1817, d. 1 September 1877 or 2 October 1877
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Henry Wallingford was born circa June 1817, probably in Lebanon, York County, MaineG.1,2 |
Marriage* | He married Alice Young on 19 April 1838 in North Berwick, York County, MaineG. Henry was from Lebanon and "Miss" Alice Young was from North Berwick when they were married. They filed intentions of marriage in both towns.34 |
Death* | Henry died on 1 September 1877 or 2 October 1877, probably in Lebanon, York County, MaineG. He resided in Lebanon at the time he died. His gravestone gives a date of 2 Oct while his probate records include a statement from a Johnathan Wallingford of Lebanon, probably his son or brother, that he died on 1 Sep.5,6 |
| Charles Wallingford7 and Samuel Shackford (tentatively)8 both place him in the family of Aaron Wallingford and Betsey Downs, yet Chamberlain says his father was Garland.9 This apparently comes from the 1850 census in which 70-year old Betsey Wallingford is living with him. Betsey (Downs) Wallingford appears in the same census living with her husband Aaron, so this Betsey is logically Betsey (Rankins) Wallingford, widow of Garland. Garland and Henry were buried in the same private cemetery. Also, in 1850 Henry's property is worth $700, which is considerably more than the $100 property of his neighbor Stephen Wallingford, son of Aaron. Stephen is five years older than Henry so if they were brothers he would likely have the better piece of real estate. As son of Garland, living with his mother, he probably inherited his father's property, which would explain the higher land value.Henry's occupation was given as "farmer".10 In the 1860 census of Lebanon Henry was still a farmer on a $800 piece of property, with personal belongings worth $20011. Ten years later he was still in the same area, and the only change in the value of his property was that his personal belongings were now worth $250. Only his youngest son Jonathan was living with he and his wife at the time. Henry and Alice were buried in a lot on what in 1892 was the Jonathan Wallingford farm (perhaps his son Jonathan?) in the section of Lebanon known as "Wallingford City".12 Today this cemetery is very difficult to find, located as it is deep within several hundred acres of thick uninhabited woods. It is down near Wallingford Pond and the Berwick town line.13 Charles Wallingford says they also had a daughter MaryElizabeth who amrried William F. Wells, but the birth date for this Mary would have her being born before her parents' marriage intention was filed, and she also doesn't appear in the 1850 census with the family when she would have been only 12 years old. Her father's name was Henry, but it must be a different, unknown Henry. |

- The age on his gravestone was 72y, 10m, implying birth about June 1817, and the 1860 and 1870 censuses show his age as 43 and 54 respectively. The only conflicting information is the 1850 census which records him as age 35, implying a 1814-15 birth.

Mary Elizabeth Wallingford

This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Mary Elizabeth Wallingford was born on 25 February 1838 in Kittery, York County, MaineG.1 |
Marriage* | She married William F. Wells, son of Thomas Wells and Nancy A. Thayer, on 10 April 1861 in Charlestown, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG. William was a provision dealer and they were both living in Charlestown when they were married.2 |
| Charles Wallingford3 places her in the family of Henry Wallingford and Alice Young, but Shackford4 was unable to place her at all. He does say, however, that her father's name was Henry. This information apparently comes from her marriage record, which lists her parents' names as Henry Wallingford and Abigail Perkins. This couple can not be identified as yet in the genealogy. The only Henry of the correct age is the one who married Alice Young, but she doesn't appear with Henry and Alice in the 1850 census of Lebanon when she would have been only 12 years old. It's possible that her father never married Abigail Perkins and Mary grew up in her mother's household.
They were living at 5 Ludlow Street in Boston during the 1900 census. |
