This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | George Wallingford was born on 17 July 1808 in Dublin, Cheshire County, New HampshireG.1 |
Marriage* | He married Helen P. Hitchcock, daughter of Amos Hitchcock and Philenia Felt, on 13 June 1838.1 |
Death* | George died on 18 July 1863, probably in Claremont., Sullivan County, New HampshireG.1 |
| George moved to Claremont, N.H. at the age of 19, and resided there for the rest of his life. He was a machinist by trade, engaging in carriage ironing. Later in life he went into the grocery business which he pursued successfully for many years. Amidst a brief biography of his life and ancestry is an even longer piece on his wife's family.2
In 1840 his family in Claremont consisted of one male under 5, one male in his thirties, and two females in their twenties.3
The family was enumerated in the 1850 census of Claremont. George's occupation was given as mechanic. [Source: A 22 April 2000 posting to the WALLINGFORD-L email list on Rootsweb.com, Census p.168.)
Helen was living in Claremont in October 1894 when she was named as a legatee in the will of George's brother Philander's wife Caroline and received $100 from the estate.4 |

Rev. Philander Wallingford
M, b. 6 June 1812, d. 6 August 1887
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Rev. Philander Wallingford was born on 6 June 1812 in Marlborough, Cheshire County, New HampshireG.1 |
Marriage* | He married Caroline Matilda Treadwell, daughter of Captain Charles Treadwell and Elizabeth Drowne, on 1 January 1838 in Newmarket, Rockingham County, New HampshireG.1,2 |
Death* | Philander died of stomache cancer on 6 August 1887 in Claremont., Sullivan County, New HampshireG.3 |
| He was listed in the 1850 census of Winchendon, Mass. aged 28, occupation clergyman, and he was living with an unknown 33 year old woman born in N.H., as well as a woman named Ann M. Stone, 27, born in Maine. The unknown woman was presumably his wife, but the age is way off. In 1850 Philander was actually 37 and Caroline was 38. Obviously the person who gave the information to the census taker was completely unfamiliar with them, as evidenced by the fact that Caroline, assuming it was her, is referred to as "Unknown" Wallingford.4
|
| A six page biographical sketch of Philander appears in the History of Marlborough, N.H., pp. 221-226. He did his Preparatory studies at Chelsea, Vermont High School and Newmarket Academy. He was licensed to exhort at Hartland, Vermont in 1841 and to preach, at Brookfield, Mass. in 1842. He was a minister with the Methodist Episcopal Church, first in Brookfield, Mass. in 1842, and later in the following Massachusetts towns: Natick, Barre, South Barre, Winchendon, North Brookfield, Shelburne Falls, and Holyoke. In 1856 he returned home to Claremont, N.H. to a home on Central Street, but for many years continued to preach in many other places, including Rochester, Rye, South Newmarket, Walpole, Cornish and Goshen, N.H., and in North Hartland and Weathersfield Bow, Vermont. He was ordained deacon by Bishop Janes, at Lowell, Mass, in 1845, and elder by Bishop Morris, at Boston in 1850. At the time the Marlborough history was published in 1881, both he and his wife were still alive. It makes no mention of children.5,6. |

Birth* | Ruth Wallingford was born before 25 September 1698, probably in Bradford, Essex County, MassachusettsG. She was baptized in Bradford on 25 September 1698 but may have been born elsewhere.1 |
Marriage* | She married first Nathaniel Merrill, son of John Merrill and Lucy Webster, on 10 June 1718 in Haverhill, Essex County, MassachusettsG.2 |
Marriage* | Ruth married second, Benjamin Wood, in July 1744, in Dracut, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG. Ruth and Benjamin's intention was filed in Dracut on 7 June 1744. She was from Haverhill, Mass. at the time.3.4,5 |
Marriage* | Ruth married third, Ebenezer Parker, on 11 March 1757, in Haverhill, Essex County, MassachusettsG. He was of Chelmsford, Mass. and she was of Dracut, Mass. when they were married. Their intention was filed in Chelmsford 3 July 1756..6 |
Death* | Ruth died sometime after 23 Sep 1782. (The date of her petition to the court.) |
| Nathaniel Merrill was a cooper. Two of their children died in the "throat distemper" epidemic that struck the area killing thousands in 1735, mostly children.7 Ruth's second husband Benjamin Wood was from Dracut, Mass. and they moved to Chelmsford, Mass.8 In 1768 and again in 1782 Ruth petitioned the court in an attempt to have the guardianship of her son Daniel Merrill changed. See his record for details. At both these times she was living in Atkinson, N.H., so may have died there as Ruth Parker. |

Marriage* | One source states that he may have married, Abigail Carleton, but given his limited mental status, this seems unlikely. The Daniel who did marry Abigail Carleton had three children born in Bradford and Haverhill, Mass.1 |
Birth* | Daniel Merrill was born on 13 January 1720/21 in Haverhill, Essex County, MassachusettsG.2 |
| According to guardianship papers filed from Atkinson, N.H. he was "non compos mentis". In 1768, "Guardianship of Daniel Merrill of Atkinson, "a person naturally wanting of Understanding," [was] granted to Daniel Poor of Atkinson." Daniel Poor was his brother-in-law, husband of his sister Anna. "Bond of Daniel Poor, gentleman, with Nicholas White and Stephen Harriman, both of Plaistow, as sureties, in the sum of £500, Feb 12, 1768, for the guardianship of Daniel Merrill; witnesses, William Parker, Joseph Moulton." His mother wasn't happy with this arrangement, however, as evidenced by the following petition:
"To the Honble John Wintworth Esqr Judge of Probate Within and for said Province of New Hampshire-- The Petition of Ruth Parker formerly the wife of Nathaniel Merrill of Haverhill in the County of Esex and Province of the Massachusetts Bay -- The said Ruth Humbly mooves in ye Behalf of Her son Daniel merrill Now Resident in atkinson in ye Province of Newhampsr aforsd He being Represented as Non compos and standing in need of a guardean the said Ruth therefore Humbly Petitioneth that Her son James merrill of atkinson aforsd may be admitted guardean to the said Daniel (in the Room of Daniel Poor of said atkinson who as I understand Has got in His guarden without my Consent or Knowledge) The said James Being Capable of that service and understanding The said Daniels Temper and Disposition will be most Likely to Leade and Conduct him in ye way that shall be most Easey and Conducive for his peace Safety Comfort and intrest -- if therefore it may be Consistant With your Honrs Wisdom and agreeable to the Rules and Equity your Petitioner Entreats that your Honr Would in your Clemencey Hear the Compassionate Petion of a Distresed mother for a Impotent son and grant that the sd James may be appointed guardean as aforsd and your Petitioner as in Duty Bound Shall Ever Pray Dated atkinson June ye 17, 1768 -- Ruth Parker"
The judge apparently did not grant this petition, which seems unusual given that Judge John Wentworth's wife Elizabeth was born a Wallingford -- the daughter of Ruth's first cousin. Perhaps he was unaware of the relationship. More than 14 years later she petitioned once again as follows:
Atkinson 23d September 1782 Sir/ it is with some Regret that I am Obliged to Trouble Your honor in the affair of my Family -- in the Year 1738 my Husband Nathaniel Merril dyed and left me sole Executrix to his Estate, unfortunately One of my Children Named Daniel Was Non Compos Mentis, my Son in Law Lieut Daniel Poor, unknown to me applyd to the then Judge of probate in this State and took Guardianship of him, and his Estate in his Own hands, Which he has improved & Received the benefit of Ever Since, altho my son has in General and for the greater part of the time been in good healrth, and Capable of Earning as much as most men in more Happier Circumstances. I am Now to Supplicate your Honour as Well my Own Perticular desire as that of my Children, that your Honour Would be pleased to take from him the Said Poor my Son in Law the Guardianship of my Said Son Daniel and to appoint my Only Son James Who I abide With or my Self alone or Both together, as Your Honour in your great Wisdom shall think best and Furthermore I begg leave to mention that my Daughter Poor in her last Sickness desired that after her decease he my said Son might be removed from her House -- I desire likewise to make mention to your Honour that the said Poor has Withheld from me for many Years Back my Right of Dower to my late Husbannds Estate -- and theirfore desire and Request that he may be Ordered to Settle his affairs and my Own and sons Property may be taken Out of his hands and put in the Hands of my Son James and your Petitioner as in Duty bound Shall Ever pray -- Ruth Parker"3
The records end at this point, with no answer as to whether or not this final petition was ever granted. |

| Jeremiah Page was active in the formation of the town of Starkstown, now Dunbarton, N.H. where he became a member of the N.H. Provincial Congresses and the Dunbarton Committee of Safety during the Revolution. He was justice of Hillsborough County in 1776. While he was involved in the formation of the town of Bradford, N.H., there is no evidence that he ever lived there. He was an amateur astronomer who in 1804 calculated the total eclipse of the sun which occurred in 1806. Jeremiah and Sarah are both buried in Dunbarton. They had seven or eight children.
A Merril genealogy says that she may have married a John Page.4 |

This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Samuel Wallingford was born on 9 August 1693 in Bradford, Essex County, MassachusettsG.1 |
Marriage* | He married Lydia Poore, daughter of Joseph Poore and Mary Wallingford, on 25 December 1723 in Newbury, Essex County, MassachusettsG. Samuel and Lydia were first cousins.2 |
Death* | Samuel died 24 or 25 December 1739 in Rowley, Essex County, MassachusettsG. The record in the published Rowley deaths reads the 24th, while a small slip of paper in Samuel's probate docket from his widow's accounting of the estate reads "for my Husband Samuel Wallings funeral charges who decest this Life December 25th 1739 10=00=0." (The latter figures indicate that the funeral cost 10 pounds.)3,4 |
| Samuel Wallingford was on a muster roll of men under the command of Col. Eleazar Tyng from 28 August to 29 November 1722. It was during the period of time known as Lovewell's War or Dummer's War from 1721 to 1725, but the main engagements with the French and Indians took place in the last two years of that war. Samuel's service likely involved just local militia scouting parties and there was probably no actual fighting involved. At the most there were just small skirmishes in 1722.
Administration on the estate of Samuel Wallingford late of Rowley was granted to the widow Lydia on 29 January 1739/40. She gave bond with William Fisk and Benjamin Poor, both of Rowley. Lydia made her mark while the others signed. The inventory of the estate was taken on 14 February 1739/40 by Thomas Perrin, William Fisk and Benjamin Poor. The total value of the estate was established as £726 6s. This included 30 acres of land with a small house and barn. The widow Lydia Wallingford made her administrator's accounting on 14 March 1742 and as "Lydia Wallingford alias Jewet" made another on 8 April 1751. A division of the estate was finally made in April 1751 by Deacon William Fisk, Samuel Johnson, Benjamin Poor, Daniel Tenney and Benjamin Stickney. One third of the estate was set off to the widow Lydia Wallingford alias Jewett and the other two thirds was divided into five equal parts. Lydia received the west end of the dwelling house and southwest part of the barn on land bounded by Benjamin Poor and Joseph Swett. Also 11 acres on the other side of the road bounded by Benjamin Poor and Thomas Lull. The other two thirds of the estate was on the north side of the road and included two thirds of the house and barn, as well as land bordering that of Jonathan Thorla and Joseph Bailey. This was divided into five equal lots.5 On 14 March 1742/3 guardianship of his sons Joseph, Samuel and Benjamin, all minors under fourteen years of age, was granted to Samuel Jewett of Rowley, presumably the same Samuel Jewett who married the widow Lydia Wallingford the following month. The widow witnessed the bond that Samuel Jewett, William Fisk and Benjamin Poor placed for the guardianship.6 |
