| What is now called Sciota was for year’s called Ober’s Corners for the family of that same name. Settlement did not begin near Sciota until after the War of 1812. Almost the first settlers were Joseph and Mary (Wallingford) Ober who arrived here from Massachusetts in 1815. He acquired a large section of heavily wooded land, built and operated three saw mills, made shingles, and cleared land for farming. He went to his mills so early in the morning and returned so late at night, he saw very little of his eight children while they were young.
The Sciota village cemetery is on the north side of the Sciota Road and on the west side of the Methodist Church (which has been heavily vandalized). It is on land originally owned by Joseph Ober. The oldest Stone was erected in 1823 for a child of Joseph and Mary Ober.2 |

Birth* | Charles Rufus Wallingford was born on 4 July 1849 in Milford, Hillsborough County, New HampshireG.1 |
Marriage* | He married first Ida Sawtelle Cooper, daughter of Rev. Jacob W. Cooper and Martha P. Fletcher, on 22 September 1874 in Ayer, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG. Charles was an attorney-at-law and they were both living in Ayer, Mass. at the time of their marriage.2 |
Marriage* | He married second Sophronia L. Roberts, daughter of Albert Roberts and Sarah E. (?), on 22 January 1897 in MaineG. He was from Milford, N.H. and she was from Lincoln, Maine when they got married.3,4 |
Death* | Charles died before 23 April 1910. His wife was a widow in the 1910 census. |
| When their son Pell was born in 1875 Charles was a lawyer and they were living in Ayer, Mass. At some point after their second son was born, but before the 1880 census was taken in June, Charles and Ida were divorced. When the census was taken Charles was living with his mother and brother Horace in Milford and working as a laborer. His wife and children were not with him. They were living with Ida's mother in Ayer, Mass., and Ida's marital status was listed as divorced. When the History of Milford, N.H. was written in 1901 Charles was living in Montague, Maine and was employed in a paper mill.
Sophronia grew up in Mattamiscontis, Maine, where her family was enumerated in the 1860 through 1880 censuses. By the time of the 1910 census on April 23d, Sophronia was a widow living with her father Albert in Old Town, Maine in a house on Main Street also inhabited by W. Frank Worthing and his wife Carrie M. Sophronia worked at home as a dressmaker at the time. Ten years later, on 2 January 1920, Sophronia, or "Fronia" as she was enumerated, was living as a boarder in the home of a Nason family at 206 Stillwater Ave. in Old Town. Once again she worked at home as a dressmaker.5 |

Birth* | Ida Sawtelle Cooper was born on 31 July 1854 in Shirley, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.1 |
Marriage* | She married first Charles Rufus Wallingford, son of Rufus Needham Wallingford and Susan Farley, on 22 September 1874 in Ayer, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG. Charles was an attorney-at-law and they were both living in Ayer, Mass. at the time of their marriage.2 |
Death* | Ida Sawtelle Cooper died of a cerebral hemorrhage on 6 May 1924 at home, 41 Chester Avenue in Waltham, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG. She was buried on May 9th in Woodlawn Cemetery in Ayer, Mass.3 |
| She was "of Ayer, Mass." according to the History of Milford, N.H. and her maiden name was Fletcher. She was Ida S. Cooper on her marriage record, and it stated that it was her first marriage. The History of Milford was probably confused with her mother's maiden name, which comes from her death record. Her death record also states that her father's first name was John, which may be in error, although her son Richard was the informant. Charles remarried in 1897, yet Ida's death record states that she was the widow of Charles. It also said that she had been living in Waltham for 38 years. |
