| There is a NH vital records birth card for Robert that was filed in Sep 1940 that gives him a birthdate of 2 May 1898, which clearly can't be correct. In it his parents are said to be age 58 and 62, which if calculated from 1940 when the record was filed would have them born in 1882 and 1878, about ten years earlier than they were actually born. There is something fishy about this particular record. It does read "Previous" at the top of the card, so this may have been an incorrect record that was subsequently corrected, but a corrected record with the 1907 date hasn't been located. As further evidence that the 1898 date is incorrect, the 1900 census of Alton, N.H. shows his father at age 8 living with his parents and grandparents, and now Robert Wallingford born in 1898 can be located in the census indexes. Robert's appearances in the 1910, 1920 and 1940 censuses are consistent with a 1907 birth - ages 2, 12 and 32. The 1930 census of Syracuse is an abberation in that it says he is age 26 when he was actually 22, but such age errors are common in old census records. But the 1898 birth date does persist in records other than that NH vital records card. His World War 2 draft card, for instance, says he was born in Rochester, N.H. on 2 May 1898. When he died in 1967 his death records in various indexes and in his obituary all have him aged 66 to 68, which are consistent with an 1898 birth. Even the Social Security Death Index gives him a 2 May 1898 birth date. One other bit of confusion is that his obituary states that he was born in Connecticut. Despite these oddities the evidence indicates that he was born on 2 May 1907, so for some reason he must have decided to add ten years to his age at some point. Given the fact that his father did the same thing it seems likely that there is a common reason for both of them to do that, but if there was a reason it is lost to history.
Shackford refers to him as "Robert Andrew Gray", which suggests that he may have gone by that name when he and his mother were living with her parents. Shackford's work was published in 1928 so he may have gathered the information on this family when he was still a child living with the Grays. He was enumerated with his grandparents in both the 1910 census of Rochester, N.H. and 1920 census of Farmington, N.H.
Robert's first marriage to Doris Ferris in Portland, Maine in 1927 is unproven. The index record on ancestry.com states that the groom was a Robert A. Wallingford - including the middle initial - but gives no other information. Presumably the original record has more but it has not been viewed. While there is no proof that this is our Robert A., there is no other known Robert A. Wallingford anywhere in this part of the country at the same time. Furthermore, in the 1930 census Doris is living alone with her mother, grandmother, brother and three children with her husband Robert nowhere mentioned. The one piece of evidence in these census records to speak against it being our Robert A. is that the place of birth of the father of the 2-year-old Robert Wallingford is said to be Maine, not N.H. as it should be. But census records commonly get states of birth wrong - especially for parents who aren't present. It's entirely possible that Doris didn't even know that her husband was born in N.H. By 1929 our Robert A. appears in the Syracuse, N.Y. area, so it appears that he abandoned his first wife, and apparently a son Robert, and moved to Syracuse. In her obituary it said that her husband Robert Wallingford pre-deceased her, which is technically true since she died in 1996 and our Robert died in 1967, but my guess is that she had long been telling people that her husband had died rather than say that she had left her. In the 1930 and 1940 censuses she is listed as married, not widowed. In 1930 she is living with two other women, one of whom is divorced (her mother) and one of whom is widowed (her grandmother) so the census taker was clearly being careful about marital status. So Doris apparently considered herself married all this time, but eventually must have called herself a widow, as she did in her 1996 obituary. She never remarried. Doris seems to have had two or three children before she married Robert, but after their marriage they had a son Robert E. Wallingford, whose line is followed here.
As stated above, by 1929 Robert had moved to Syracuse, N.Y. The city directory for that year has him living at 1108 Center Street, employed as a plater. In July he married his wife Hilda Smith, and the 1930 directory records the two of them living at 725 Helen Street, with Robert employed as a laborer. That is the address where they were located in the 1930 census, living with his mother Alice and her second husband Benedict Luhr. The census called him a laborer in a steel shop, which sounds like a place where a 'plater' might work. They were listed at the same address in the 1931 and 1932 city directories of Syracuse. In 1932 they lived at 131 Oakwood Avenue and Robert was employed as a plater. In the 1933 Syracuse directory he was a porter living at 227 Maplehurst Avenue.
They don't appear in the Syracuse directory after that. The 1940 census finds them living in the Pitcher Hill section of Salina, N.Y. with their two children Shirley and Robert. His obituary states that he lived in North Syracuse for 25 years, and Salina is a part of the northern section of Syracuse. Robert Sr. worked as a window washer in a department store. They were living there when Robert filled out his World War II draft card in Feb 1942. He was working for the Crouse-Hinds Co. of Syracuse at the time, and described at 5' 11 1/2" tall with blue eyes, brown hair and a ruddy complexion.
His obituary states that after 25 years living in North Syracuse he moved to nearby Kirkville, N.Y. It was in August 1956 when he placed the following notice in the Syracuse Herald Journal (21 Aug 1956, p.25): "TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN. I hereby give notice that I will not pay or be responsible for any debts, accounts or obligations contracted by anyone but myself after today. Aug. 26, 1956." He was still living in Kirkville when his father died in Jul 1966. At some point between then and his death in Feb 1967 he must have moved to nearby Chittenango, as that was his residence when he died.6,7,8 |
| His obituary appeared in the 18 February 1967 Syracuse Herald Journal and read as follows:
CHITTENANGO -- Robert A. Wallingford, 66, died yesterday at Community-General Hospital. Born in Connecticut, Mr. Wallingford lived in North Syracuse 25 years before moving to Kirkville. He was a truck driver for General Electric Co. before his retirement a year ago. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Frank Curro of Florida; a son Robert B. Wallingford, of Central Square; and five grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Hilton Funeral Home, Brewerton. Cremation will follow.9 |

Wallingford was said to be age 1967, which fits more with the seemingly erroneous 1898 birth record than the more likely 1907 one, so there may still be something amiss here. But Madison is not far from the Syracuse area where he lived all his life so it must be the correct person.).
