Richard Wallingford
M, b. circa 1804, d. 31 March 1876
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Richard Wallingford was born circa 1804 in MaineG. (Based on the 1850 and 1860 censuses.)1 |
Marriage* | He married Rebecca Richard on 9 January 1825 in Middleton, Strafford County, New HampshireG. They were both from Alton at the time of their marriage.2 |
Death* | Richard died on 31 March 1876.3 |
| His parentage is unproven at this point and is only conjecture by Shackford. In 1850 Richard was living in Alton, N.H., a 46-year old farmer born in Maine. His wife Rebecca was 50 and born in N.H. With them were two children Otis, 19 and Betsey, 144. Ten years later they were still in Alton. Richard, now a 56-year old farmer still born in Maine, had a farm worth $400 and a personal estate worth $100. His wife Rebekah was 61 and now also born in Maine. With them was Abigail Wallingford, 27, born N.H. (with no relationship stated of course), and Charles O. Winchester, 8, born N.H. In the house next door was his son Seth O. Wallingford and family.5 In 1870 Richard and Rebecca show ages of 79 and 75, respectively, which don't correlate to either of the other two censuses at all. Both still born N.H., and Richard was a farm labourer. Their son Otis and family were still next door. The daughter Abigail listed below may not belong in this family, and is placed here on very flimsy evidence gathered from census records. |

Birth* | Maria O. Locke was born on 4 August 1806 in Stanstead, Quebec, CanadaG.1 |
Marriage* | She married Ives Wallingford, son of David Wallingford and Abigail Stocker, in 1827. The Locke Genealogy states that they were married about 18302, but their son George appears to have been aged 52 in1880, implying an earlier date for their marriage. |
Death* | Maria died of "Paralysis", on 27 June 1876, in Watervliet, Berrien County, MichiganG, at age 69.3 |

George S. Wallingford

This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | George S. Wallingford was born circa 28 1827 in CanadaG. (Assuming he is the individual found in the 1880 census in Table Bluff, California.) |
| According to the Locke Genealogy, he lived in California.1 He is likely the G.S. Wallingford (indexed as Hallingford on the LDS website), age 52, born in Canada to a father born in NH and a mother born in Canada, who was living in Table Bluff, California in 1880. This individual lived alone and worked as a wheelwright.2 His age at 52 would have him as being born before the approximate marriage date given in the Locke Genealogy for his parents (1830), but perhaps that date is in error. |

Marriage* | She married Henry Woodruff.1 |
Birth* | Maria Wallingford was born circa 1832 in New York or CanadaG. (Her year of birth is based on the 1850 census and the 1870 census (in which it says she was born in New York like her husband.) |
| On 14 July 1870 Henry, Maria and their two sons George and Fred were living in Watervliet, Michigan when the census was taken. Henry was a 41-year old farmer born in New York. Marion was a 38-year old housekeeper also born in New York. George, 15, and Fred, 9, were both born in Michigan and attended school. Henry's real estate was valued at $4000 and his personal estate at $500. The Woodruffs lived in Columbia, Michigan at some point.2 |

Death* | Ann died of uterine cancer on 8 May 1882 in Coloma, Berrien County, MichiganG. Her surname was Perry when she died, and her marital status was married.2 |
| On 6 July 1870 the family was enumerated in the 1870 census of Watervliet, Michigan, not far from where her parents lived. Charles was a 35-yera old store clerk born in Vermont, while Ann was a 32-year old housekeeper born in Ohio. Their daughter "Cora" was 10, born in Michigan, and attended school. The value of their real estate was $1000 and their personal estate $250. The record of Ann's death gave "Real Estate Dealer's" as her occupation, which may have been shortened from "Real Estate Dealer's Wife". |

Her daughter Eva's birth record says she was born in Rochester, N.H., while son Bertie's says New Durham, N.H. The latter also gave her age as 43 in 1882, suggesting a birth date around 1839. She was age 23 in the 1860 census of Alton. There is no conclusive proof that her parents were Luther and Louise but they were the only New Durham Ricker family in the 1840 census.

Birth* | Calvin Almon Wallingford was born on 5 September 1891 in Alton, Belknap County, New HampshireG.1,2,3,4 |
Marriage* | He married Ethel Ada Gray, daughter of Charles O. Gray and Emma L. Hall, on 28 April 1907 in Farmington, Strafford County, New HampshireG. They were divorced on 25 Oct 1912, the cause being abandonment and refusal to cohabit on the part of Calvin.5,6 |
Marriage* | Calvin Almon Wallingford married second Mary E. Jordan, daughter of George S. Jordan and Mary E. Winterbottom, on 16 June 1915 in Newark, Essex County, New JerseyG. They were both residents of Newark at the time.7 |
Marriage* | Calvin Almon Wallingford married third Adeline Hand, daughter of Percy Leroy Hand and Hattie Storrier.8 |
Death* | Calvin Almon Wallingford died on 29 June 1966 at Memorial Hospital in Syracuse, Onondaga County, New YorkG.9,10 |
Burial* | He was buried on 2 July 1966 in White Chapel Memorial Gardens in DeWitt, Onondaga County, New YorkG.9,11 |
| Calvin was age 15 and Ethel was 19 when they married, and their son Robert was born only a few days later. Later in life Calvin appears to have added 10 years to his life, as later records give his birth date as 5 Sep 1881. But early records disprove this, including more than one birth record as well as the 1900 census in which he is 8 years old and said to have been born in Sep 1891. His obituary stated that he was 84 when he was actually 74, and the 1881 fiction is even perpetuated on his gravestone. And his World War II draft card gives the 1881 birth date. At his second marriage, when he was 23, the record states he was 25. His World War I draft card from a few years later gave a 5 Sep 1890 date. He appears to be a man who either didn't know when he was born, or did not feel strongly impelled to tell the truth about his age.
Two years before they were divorced for abandonment issues the 1910 census finds his first wife Ethel and son Robert living with Ethel's parents in Rochester. Ethel worked as an operative in a woolen mill at the time.
Calvin can't be located in the 1910, 1920 or 1930 censuses. By 1913 he starts appearing in the Newark city directories. (He isn't listed in the 1912 directory.) That first year he was living at 134 South Street, working as a driver. The next year, 1914, he was at 45 Broad Street, still working as a driver. On 16 Jun 1915 he married his second wife Mary Jordan in Newark. Oddly the 1915 New Jersey State Census taken 13 days earlier on 3 Jun 1915 has a 49-year-old Calvin Wallingford living in Newark who was born May 1865 in Maine. Calvin's marriage record clearly states that he was age 25, and names his parents Charles and Carrie (Randall) Wallingford. The identity of this 49-year-old Calvin is unknown, so perhaps it is our Calvin with a wildly incorrect birth date and wrong state of birth.
The 1915 Newark directory says that he had removed to Jersey City, but the next year he is back as a driver living at 32 Hunter Street. Beginning with the 1917 directory and running through 1927 the Wallingford entries are for Mrs. Calvin A. Wallingford, who is living at 470 Mulberry Street, which is the home of her parents. It seems like Calvin may have abandoned his second wife as well, and she moved back in with her parents. One clue to where he may have gone is found in his World War I draft registration card, filled out around 1917-18. This has him living at 207 Jelliff Avenue in Newark. In this record his birth date is stated as 5 Sep 1890 in Alton, N.H., and he was said to be 26 years old. He worked as a driver for an ice company in Newark. It stated that he had no dependents under the age of 12 who were soley dependent on him.
The next time we find a record of Calvin is in the 1940 census, in which he was living with his third wife and five youngest children at 222 Pompey Hollow Road in Cazenovia, N.Y., occupation farmer. He was still there two years later in Apr 1942 when he filled out his World War II draft registration card. He said he was self employed at the time, and was described as being 6 ' 1/2"" tall with gray eyes and hair and a ruddy complexion. |
| His obituary appeared in the 1 July 1966 Post-Standard of Syracuse, N.Y. and read as follows:
CALVIN A. WALLINGFORD. CAZENOVIA. Calvin A. Wallingford, 84, of Pompey Hollow Road, Cazenovia RD2, died Wednesday at Memorial Hospital, Syracuse.
