Birth*Stephen Wallingford was born circa 1809. (He was 40 in the 1850 census, 52 in the 1860 census and 60 in the 1870 census of Lebanon.) His parentage is not proven, and is only conjecture by Shackford.
Marriage intention*Stephen Wallingford filed an intention of marriage with Mercy Wallingford, whose parents are unknown after 29 November 1833 in Lebanon, York County, MaineG. They were both living in Lebanon at the time, but may have been married elsewhere.1
The birth dates of their first two children currently predate their parents' marriage. Almyra's date comes from an unreliable source so may very well be wrong, but Alvah's approximate date of birth comes from two Civil War enlistment records which would appear to be reliable, and the 1850 and 1860 censuses agree with the date. An 18-year old Charlotte Wallingford appears at the end of the family in the 1850 census, and given the placement in the census record and the fact that her birth would predate her parents' marriage by two or three years, it seems likely that she is either an adopted child or a child of a relative. Is it possible that Alvah and Almyra also belong to other Wallingford families or were adopted by Stephen and Mercy?

In 1850 the family was living in Lebanon, Maine. Stephen was a farmer on a small plot of land worth $1002. In 1860 they were still in the "Wallingford City" area of Lebanon, and Stephen was a farmer on a piece of land now worth $200, with personal belongings worth $60.3 In 1870 they were still in the same area, and Stephen was a farmer on a piece of land still worth $200, and personal property worth $100.

Birth*Mercy Wallingford was born on 15 March 1803? In MaineG. Her parentage is unknown. Birth date is from the Wallingford genealogy yet in the 1850 census her age was given as 40, implying birth about 1810. The Wallingford genealogy presumably got the date from an age at death. I haven't examined this death record yet. The 1860 census still says she was 40 years old, so clearly there is no consensus on her age at any given time. In the 1870 census she was 61, implying 1809.1

Marriage*She married first, Samuel Randall, on 18 November 1838, (date of marriage intention) in Berwick, York County, MaineG. They were both living in Lebanon when they got married. They filed their marriage intention there on 29 September 1838. At that time Samuel was said to be of Berwick and Ann of Lebanon.3.4
Marriage*She married his first cousin once removed John Wallingford, son of William B. Wallingford and Joanna Pierce, before 21 December 1852 in Somersworth, Strafford County, New HampshireG. John and Ann were first cousins once removed if their ancestry is reported correctly here.5
In the 1850 census of Somersworth, N.H. Samuel Randall is a 32-year old manufacturer, born in Maine and Ann is also 32, born in Maine. With them are three children: Patience, 5, Lydia, 4, and Sarah J., 2, all born in N.H. Their children Aaron and Ann who should have been with the family aren't present in the census. Also with them are Giles and Malinda Wallingford as well as a Martha J. Wallingford.6 Giles and Malinda were husband and wife, and Malinda was daughter of Ann's cousin Jonathan, son of Garland. Giles' placement in the family is presently unknown. There is much confusion over the identify of this Martha J., as there appear no less than 3 women by this exact name in various 1850 censuses of the area.

Ann married second, her first cousin once removed John Wallingford (William B., Garland, John, John, John, Nicholas). See his family for a continuation of that line.

Birth*Aaron W. Randall was born circa January 1839, probably in Somersworth, Strafford County, New HampshireG. The Milton, NH Town Report record of his death states that he was born in Berwick, Maine, and the Rochester, NH Town Report record of his son Walter's death gives Aaron's birth place as Milton Mills, NH. It is the NH Register of Civil War soldiers that states he was born in Somersworth, and since that is the earliest record we will assume it to be the most reliable. He was 57y, 9m of age when he died.1,2
Marriage*He married Emily S. Colomy, daughter of Isaac Colomy and Lydia Smith, on 13 June 1864. He was of Berwick and she was of Newfield, Maine at the time of their marriage.3

Birth*Minerva I. Randall was born on 2 August 1853. (Calculated from age on gravestone) Shackford has a puzzling note after her name that reads, "abt. 1853 after her husband's death by a colored barber - Hill." The date is presumably Minerva's birthdate, and "her husband" presumably is referring to Minerva's parents. My guess is that he meant to say that Minerva was born after Samuel Randall's death and was the daughter of the widow Ann and a black barber named Hill. One of Shackford's sources was Mrs. Laura A. Wallingford who was from another Lebanon family that wasn't closely related to this one. Perhaps it was local tradition and if so is unlikely to be verifiable now.
Marriage*She married Andrew J. Wallingford, son of George Wallingford and Almyra Wallingford, on 1 January 1873 in Berwick, York County, MaineG. On their marriage record they were both said to be "of Berwick", and Minerva was called "Miss Minnie Wallingford", obviously because her mother had remarried to John Wallingford. Andrew and Minerva were second cousins once removed.1

Birth*Eunice Wallingford was born circa 1840, probably in Lebanon, York County, MaineG.1
She may be the Eunice Wallingford, aged 20, born in Maine living with the family of James and Lovina Goodwin in the 1860 census of Farmington, N.H., with Lovina likely being her sister. More research is necessary.2 She would have had to be entered in both the 1860 censuses of Lebanon and Farmington for this to be true, but that kind of thing isn't unheard of. Eunice was no longer with her parents in the 1870 census of Lebanon.

  2. Their eldest child in the 1870 census of Wells, Maine was age 6. Evidence for her marriage to James Crediford comes from a combination of circumstantial sources. The death record for a Sarah Elizabeth Hartford in 1953, daughter of James "Crieford" and Betsy Wallingford. This Sarah was born in Ogunquit, Maine in 1866. Ogunquit was then part of Wells. Looking at the 1870 census we find a likely family of James and Betsy Crediford with daughter Sarah E., age four. They also have a son Alva born around 1868, and our Betsey Wallingford had a brother Alvah who died in 1864. The death record for Alvah Crediford in 1930 lists his parents age James Crediford and Betsey Wallingford.

Birth*Tappin Wallingford was born about 1845-48, probably in Lebanon, York County, MaineG. He was 4 in the 1850 census, yet in the 1860 census he was 13 and younger than his brother Giles. One censustaker apparently had them confused. Chamberlain's "Lebanon Genealogies" says that Tappin was born 12 October 1845, which is surely based on information taken from the account book of Dr. Samuel W. Jones of Lebanon, which contained records of 100 births in town. It records the birth of a child of Stephen Wallingford on that date. Chamberlain apparently only consulted the 1850 census for his work, so seeing that Tappin was 4 in that census assumed that he must be the child born on that date. He never saw the reversal of their ages in the 1860 census, so in reality this birth date could apply to either Tappin or to Giles. Further research is needed.1,2,3
He was 4 in the 1850 census and 13 in the 1860 census of Lebanon, Maine. The 1860 census spelled his name Tappen. He was no longer with his parents in the 1870 census.

Birth*William L. Wallingford was born on 25 September 1857 in Lebanon, York County, MaineG. Date of birth is on gravestone. Place of birth is from marriage record.1
Marriage*He married Sophia H. Thompson, daughter of Edward Thompson and Mary E. (?), on 26 December 1881 in Douglas, Worcester County, MassachusettsG. At the time they were married William was a farmer and they were both living in Douglas, Mass.2
Death*William died on 11 May 1892. He was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Berwick, Maine.3
His gravestone gives his birthdate and the 1860 census of Stephen Wallingford's family says their son William was 3 at the time, but this is the only evidence at present tying the William who died in 1892 with the son of Stephen who was 3 in the 1860 census -- their similarity in ages. His age in the 1870 census was 12, which is consistent.
