- Their eldest child in the 1870 census of Wells, Maine was age 6. Evidence for her marriage to James Crediford comes from a combination of circumstantial sources. The death record for a Sarah Elizabeth Hartford in 1953, daughter of James "Crieford" and Betsy Wallingford. This Sarah was born in Ogunquit, Maine in 1866. Ogunquit was then part of Wells. Looking at the 1870 census we find a likely family of James and Betsy Crediford with daughter Sarah E., age four. They also have a son Alva born around 1868, and our Betsey Wallingford had a brother Alvah who died in 1864. The death record for Alvah Crediford in 1930 lists his parents age James Crediford and Betsey Wallingford.

- He was age two and born in Maine in the 1870 census of Wells, Maine. His death record gave date of birth as 23 Sep 1870, which can't be correct as to the year given that he was 2 in the 1870 census taken on July 1. Marriage* | He married first Janet McNeil on 30 December 1909 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Dumfries, Dumfrieshire, ScotlandG.1 |

Death* | William Craigie Keith Mackie died on 24 December 1941 in Hong KongG.1 |
| William was educated at Dumfries Academy and became a regular soldier with the Seaforth Highlanders, enlisting in 1901 at age 15. He was a bagpiper and had won the Gold Medal in Inverness 1909 for piping. In 1910 he was awarded the Silberne medaille d'Ernest. He served with the King's Own Scottish Borderers during the First World War and was received the Meritorious Service Medal in 1919. He was living at 11 Terregles Street, Maxwelltown, Troqueer, Scotland as a Pipe Major in the 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders when he married Janet McNeill of 48 Shakespeare Street, Dumfries in 1909 in Dumfries. It is unknown for certain whether they had children, but may have had a son who died young.
In March 1929 William and his second wife Amelia and their family sailed for Hong Kong on board the ship "Kalyan." In Hong Kong he became a manager at Kowloon Docks, and later an engineer at Whampoa Dock. During the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong in December 1941 he was a member of the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps and was last seen alive on the day before Christmas piping in defiance as the Japanese invaded. His story has been written up in the ChinaDaily newspaper of Hong Kong on 31 Dec 2010 as follows:
It was the day when, in one corner of the city at least, all that stood between the invading Japanese army and the conquest of Hong Kong was a lone Scotsman armed with nothing but a set of bagpipes.
Pipe-Major William Craigie Keith Mackie was reportedly last seen alive on Christmas Eve, 1941, at Stanley, Hong Kong, playing the tunes "Cock O' the North" and "Heilan' Laddie" as the Japanese attacked.
Aged 59, Pipe-Major Mackie was a retired soldier who came to work in Hong Kong between the two world wars. A member of the volunteer defence force, he died in the last stand of British Commonwealth forces around Stanley just a day before Hong Kong was surrendered to the Japanese.
His story - with Japanese invaders finding one of the last lines of defence in Stanley not a gun post but a Scotsman with a set of bagpipes and a repertoire of Highland tunes - confirms Hong Kong's powerful and durable bond with the instrument.
Ron Abbott, chairman of the Hong Kong Piping Society, has researched the story of the heroic piper's last stand and has found that before moving to the Far East, Mackie served in World War I where he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his service in France.
His name is recorded at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery at Sai Wan in Hong Kong as well as the war memorial at St John's Church in his native Dumfries, Scotland.
Abbott said Mackie was a member of the Scottish company of the Hong Kong Volunteer Corps which formed its own Pipes and Drums unit in 1920. A 1932 China Mail article traced by Abbott describes how a performance was led by "pipers under Pipe-Major Mackie".
Today, bagpipe bands are flourishing in communities across Asia including Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, and even Shanghai and Beijing. Japan, meanwhile, has a large number of its own pipe bands and even has its own annual Highland Games. Pipe-Major Mackie would undoubtedly have approved.

| William, who was called Keith, grew up in England and Hong Kong. He became a merchant seaman and during the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong in which his father was killed, he was captured while scuttling ships in Hong Kong harbour and was a prisoner of the Japanese in Hong Kong from 1941. The 19 yr old Keith dug a secret tunnel, was fluent in Cantonese and negotiated medicines for the other prisoners on his dangerous jaunts to the outside. After the war he led a successful and prosperous life in Australia.
William and Jacqueline had six children, lived in Leura and Blaxland in the mountains behind Sydney, Australia, then later in Brisbane. He was a chief engineer on ships, and a grand niece calls him a charming sailor and perpetual womaniser who lived life to the full.1,3 |

| David moved with his parents to Hong Kong when he was a young child, and in Dec 1941 during the Japanese invasion in which his father was killed he and his mother were evacuated on one of the last ships out and taken to Sydney, Australia. He had been studying for Oxbridge when the war destroyed that avenue and left him at age fifteen supporting his mother and sister in an unwelcoming country. He found an apprenticeship as a boiler maker and studied at night. He joined the war effort as a member of the Royal Australian Air Force in 1944 and 1945. In his early twenties he became an aeronautical engineer then a structural and civil engineer and finally a lecturer. His daughter Rhonda says he "had enormous energy, was an excellent athlete, charming, a great conversationalist and challenging thinker but also a heavy drinker with the red rage gene, he was not without demons." He was married three times and had seven children in all. Three by June, two by Diana, and two by Ethel. At one point he lived in Bennelong, New South Wales.3,4,2 |
