Birth*John Corstorphine Craigie was born on 15 September 1869 at home on Albert St. in Kirkwall, Orkney, ScotlandG.1
Marriage*He married Margaret Alice Tweddle, daughter of William Goodfellow Tweddle and Jane Pattinson, in 1902 in Carlisle, Cumberland County, EnglandG. Their marriage occurred in the months between July and September, 1902.2
Death*John Corstorphine Craigie died on 1 April 1909 in Carlisle, Cumberland County, EnglandG.3
In the 1881 census John was one of two children, along with his sister Ellen, still living with their parents. They had moved south to Edinburgh, Scotland. The census taken that year has them living at "Memerl Church" in Edinburgh St. Cuthberts.

In 1891 he and his mother were living at 64 South Clerk Street, still in Edinburgh St. Cuthberts, and John was employed as a railway clerk.

When his mother died in 1901 one of her sons signed the death certificate as informant. Only two sons were still alive at this point, John and his American brother James, who was living in Boston at the time, so it is likely John who signed although the first name is very difficult to read. The last name is clearly Craigie and the relationship is clearly son. The first letter of the first name could easily be a J, and it looks like it has an n or m at the end. But there doesn't appear to be an h, so it this was him he wasn't being very legible. He was living at 30 Granville Road in Carlisle, England at the time. At the time of his death he was still living in Carlisle, at 8 Abbey Street, and working as a railway collector.

According to the 1911 census his widow Margaret was the mother of only one child.

Birth*Mary Jane Craigie was born on 26 February 1873 at 3 Spittal Street in the District of St.George in Edinburgh, ScotlandG.1
Death*Mary died of dilation of the heart on 22 March 1912 at home, 9 Sumner Ave. in Medford, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG. A secondary cause of death was listed as mitral insufficiency.2
Burial*She was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Mystic Lawn section in Medford. She was buried in the same plot as her father who died shortly after her.
She was living with her parents on 28 Chambers Street in Boston at the time of the 1900 census and her occupation was listed as "seamstress". She may have worked with her father at some point for the Jordan Marsh store, according to her brother Frank's daughter Blanche Russell.

On 8 June 1908 she purchased land and buildings on lot 87 on Pearson Rd. in Somerville, Mass. (Middlesex Co. South, Mass. Deeds 3372:488) Five days after her death, on 27 March 1912, her mother conveyed the land to her brother William (Deeds, 3677:571), who in turn conveyed it back to his mother on 21 May 1914 (Deeds, 3884:122). All this was probably related to mortgages and financing. Her mother finally sold it on 17 September 1915 (Deeds, 3998:484).

She never married or had children, and probably lived with her parents all her life. She died only 20 days before her father did. Her death certificate stated that she had no occupation.

The "Medford Mercury" for 29 March 1912 had a front page article on her death that read as follows.

Her obituary appeared in the 29 March 1912 Medford Mercury and read as follows:

Miss Mary J. Craigie died last Friday morning at the home of her parents on Sumner avenue, after an illness of many weeks, she having been confined to her bed some three months. Miss Craigie was the daughter of James C. and Mary Craigie and was born in Scotland, coming to this country when young. For the past eight years she has resided in Medford and during that time has formed a large circle of friends who were attracted by her unusual personality. She possessed that rare combination of virtue, sweetness, goodness and sympathy which make a woman worthy of friendship and love. To know her was to admire her and to love her. During her long, painful illness she always remainded the same bright, cheerful person as when health was good. She bore her affliction with the same courage she had often striven to impart to others. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from her late home, the officiating clergyman being Rev. G.F. Bolster, of the South Medford Baptist church, where Miss Craigie was an attendent and member. The remains lay in a casket of gray brocade velvet and were surrounded by a wealth of beautiful floral pieces. A male quartet rendered "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," "Nearer My God To Thee," and "Safe in the Fold." Among the large number present at the funeral was a delegation from Tremont temple [in Boston], of which church she was a valued member previous to her connection with the South Medford Baptist church. The interment was at Oak Grove. Besides her parents she leaves three brothers.3

Birth*James Alexander Craigie was born on 4 January 1875 at home, 8 Everett Street in East Boston, Suffolk County, MassachusettsG.1
Marriage*He married Selma Emilie Sendler, daughter of John Joseph Sendler and Augusta Hermann, on 2 December 1903 in Somerville, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.2
Death*James died after being run over by a train, on 22 November 1910 at Lawrence General Hospital in Lawrence, Essex County, MassachusettsG. He was buried November 25th in Woodlawn Cemetery in Malden, Mass.3
James lived with his parents in the Boston area, Concord, NH and Medford, Mass. until his marriage in Dec 1903. He was listed twice in the 1900 census. On June 1 he was recorded as living with his parents at 28 Chambers St. in Boston and on June 14 he was recorded as a boarder in the home of Irwin Dexter in Arlington, Mass.

He served in the army during the Spanish War in 1898. He was a private in the First Massachusetts Heavy Artillery, Battery B. This battery never left New England, serving as coastal defense in case of an invasion that never came. Battery B served in at Fort Warren in Boston Harbor, Newburyport at Plum Island, Forts Constitution and McClary in Portsmouth Harbor, and Fort Pickering in Salem.

James was a railroad worker all his adult life, brief though it was. At various times he was listed as a conductor, brakeman, switchman, or freight conductor. At the time of their marriage his wife Selma was listed as a sewing machine stitcher.

After their marriage James and Selma lived with her parents at 154A Medford Street in Somerville, Mass. (Somerville directory & birth cert. of son Arthur) On 15 Dec 1905 Selma gave birth to a stillborn daughter, and they were living on their own at 57 Joy Street in Somerville at the time. The 1906 Somerville directory lists them at that address. By 1907 they had moved to 90 Carlisle Street in New Haven, Conn. (New Haven directory) and the following year to 86 Sixth Street in New Haven. (New Haven directory)

When the 1910 census was taken James was not living with his wife and two children, and his whereabouts at the time are unknown by this writer. Selma and the kids were back in Somerville at 26 Tenney Court. Living with them were Selma's father and brother Richard.

This is where James was said to have been living at the time of his fatal accident in November. The November 23d issue of the "Lawrence Sun" newspaper had two stories about the accident, one written before his death and one written after. The first was on page 8 and read as follows:

"BOTH LEGS CRUSHED BY FREIGHT TRAIN. Little Hope For Recovery of James A. Craigie, the Brakeman Run Over at Market Street. James Alexander Craigie of Somerville, the brakeman who was run over by a freight train near the freight office of the Boston & Maine at Market street at 2 o'clock Tuesday morning is reported at the General hospital to be in a serious condition and there is little hope for his recovery. One of his legs is off above the knee and the other is almost severed. The accident happened shortly after 2 o'clock when Craigie was making up a freight near Market street. He had just fixed a coupling pin and it is believed that he walked into a freight coming from the east on the track adjoining the track on which he was working. The injured man was taken to the General hospital in the police ambulance. He came to this city from Somerville where he lived at 28 [actually 26] Tenney street. He is married and has two children."

The same issue has a story on page one that was written after his death:
"PASSED AWAY AT HOSPITAL. James Alexander Craigie, Injured by Freight Train, Died Last Night. James Alexander Craigie of 26 Tenney Court, Somerville, who was run over early Tuesday morning by a freight train while about his work near the freight office of the Boston & Maine on Market Street, passed away at 20 minutes after 8 last evening at the General Hospital where he had lain in a doubtful condition of recovery since his injury. One of the man's legs had been completely severed while the other was taken off above the knee. Although the hospital authorities entertained but slight hopes of his recovery every effort was made to stay the last sparks of life. It was hoped that the man's life might be saved, or at least prolonged, by removing the remaining portion of the other leg which had begun to be affected by blood poisoning. About 7 o'clock last evening he was sent to the operating table. He passed away during the operation. Mr. Craigie was aged 32 years [actually 35] and lived with his wife and two children at their home in Somerville. The family was communicated with and an undertaker from Somerville will take charge of the body."

James left no will but in his probate records4 he is repeatedly mentioned as having the alias of Robert A. Alexander. There is no explanation for this and no mention of any relatives by the surname of Alexander.

After his death his widow Selma and two children remained at the Tenney Court home for only a short time. The 1912 Somerville directory reported that they lived on Teele Ave. in Medford, Mass., but it must refer to the period before 1 May 1911 when Selma purchased a home at 122 Mystic Ave. in Medford, not far from the home of her in-laws.

On 3 July 1914 she remarried, in Medford, a man named Otto Frederick Zander5 who was born on 6 September 1889 (according to his age at death) in New Brenz, Germany to John D. and Miria D. (Holz) Zander.

Both Selma and Otto were German, which caused problems for them during the First World War when Otto was supposedly arrested for flying the German flag in Medford. (This according to Blanche Russell.) On 11 October 1915, Selma and Otto had a daughter Augusta Marie "Gussie" Zander born at home in Medford.6 Gussie married Angus Fraser Kerr on 2 April 1937 in Saugus, Mass.7 He was born on 23 September 1912 in Somerville, Mass. to Murdock Kerr and Sarah MacDonald.8 He died 22 January 1996 in Reading, Mass.9 having married two more times after Gussie.

Selma and Otto Zander lived at 122 Mystic Avenue for the entire short life of their marriage. Selma lost a second young husband to an accident when on 2 December 1917 Otto was killed in a motorcycle accident in Cambridge. He had been employed at the Charlestown Navy Yard as a bricklayer at the time.10,11 Otto was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett, Mass.

A full year after Otto's death Selma gave birth to a daughter, father unknown, named Selma Wilhelmina Zander. She was born in Medford on 20 Dec 1918.12 The daughter Selma married in Medford, on 5 April 1942, Nicholas DeLuca.13 He was born in Providence, RI about 1914 to Joseph DeLuca and Catherine DeLeo. Selma died on 31 May 1999 in Wilmington, Mass.14

In 1920 and 1924 (there were no directories published between those years) the elder Selma was listed as still living at 122 Mystic. On 29 October 1925 she sold the home on Mystic Avenue. In the 1926 Medford directory she is listed at 69 Stanley Ave. in Medford, and again in 1928 and 1930.

Directories after 1930 haven't been checked, but according to her death certificate she lived in Medford the remainder of her life, the last two years at the home of her daughter Gussie Kerr, the informant on the certificate, of 50 Bowen Ave.

Her obituary (Medford Daily Mercury, 31 Oct. 1949, p.6) reads, in part:

"Falling a full length of the stairs from the second floor to the landing below, Selma E. (Sendler) Zander, 73, was pronounced dead at her home, 50 Bowen avenue, by attending physicians. She was stricken with a heart attack on the landing at the second floor and died before she fell, according to the doctor's report."

She was a member of the St. John's Methodist Church in South Medford.
His obituary appeared in the 3 December 1910 Cambridge Tribune and read as follows:

Death of James A. Craigie. The funeral of James A. Craigie, who was killed in Lawrence by being struck by a shifting engine last week Tuesday, and who was well known in this city, was held at his late home, 2 Tenney court, East Somervllle, last week Friday afternoon at 2, and was attended by a large number of friends and comrades of the United Spanish War Veterans from Boston, First Regiment Association and representatives of the Boston & Maine R.R. The services were conducted by Roger Wolcott Camp, U. S. W. V., and the body taken to Woodlawn Cemetery, Malden, where it was interred, the ritual of the U. S. W. V. being read by a detail of the camp under Junior Vice-Commander Bart. J. Hally. There were several pieces of flowers from Spanish War associates, railroad men and Battery B, Cambridge. Mr. Craigie leaves a wife. He served in the U. S. Army during war with Spain.15

When they were married in 1927 they were living in Medford. Dorothy already had a nearly four-year-old daughter named Frances, whose true father may have been someone by the name of Raymond Holland. This child took the surname of Craigie after her step-father adopted her on 23 Jul 1929.4

When the adoption took place in July and when their daughter Dorothy was born in Oct 1929 they were living at 64 Windsor Road in Medford.

The 1930 Medford city directory records the family at 17 Goldsmith Avenue, and they were still there in May 1931 when his grandmother Craigie's estate was settled.

When their daughter Marguerite was born in Dec 1934 they were back at 69 Stanley Avenue, his mother's residence, in Medford. They were possibly still there on 4 Aug 1937 when the Middlesex Co. South, Mass. Deeds, 6142:124, records a water lien against the property, which was in Dorothy's name. At present the deeds in which this land was purchased or sold have not been located

Between the time they lived in Medford and when they show up in Arlington they lived in both Cambridge and Lexington, Mass., according to their divorce papers.

By February 1939, when their son Ronald was born, they were living at 86 Margaret Street in Arlington, Mass.

On 25 Jul 1944, while living in Arlington, they purchased a home on Dorothy Road in Arlington (Deeds, 6784:155). Their daughter Frances and her husband Charles Dexter lived at 18 Dorothy Road during 1946-1951.

Arthur and Dorothy separated in Oct 1946 and were divorced 22 Jan 1947 (Middlesex Co. South, Mass. Divorce File 31300). Dorothy apparently got the house because she sold it on 27 Jul 1950 (Deeds, 7615:340).

Dorothy turned right around and purchased another property on July 31st, this time in Somerville, Mass. at 8 Kent Court (Deeds, 7617:78). She moved to Upton, Mass. at some point before her death in 1961.

After the divorce Arthur may have spent about three years living with his half-sister Gussie Kerr while he was suffering from a drinking problem (Acc. to Blanche Russell). His mother's obituary in 1949 gives his residence as Boston.

1952-53: (?) the Boston city directory lists an Arthur Craigie as residing at 62 West Newton Street in Boston.

1953-54: the Boston city directory lists an Arthur H. Craigie, with wife Mary G., as living at 108 W. Broadway in South Boston. This is probably another Arthur, as yet unidentified.

1963: the Boston city directory lists an Arthur Craigie living at 52 Chandler Street in Boston.
Feb 1967: 17 Balsam Street, Dorchester, Mass. at time of death.

Occupations:
1927: Laundryman at time of marriage.
1929: "Driver"
1930, 1934, 1939: laundryman. [Acc. To Blanche Russell, he worked in the laundry owned by his brother James]
WWII years: His daughter Dorothy states that he worked at the Boston Naval Shipyard during the war. He was never in the military.
19??: His daughter Dorothy states that he owned his own laundry named "Dorothy's Laundry."
1953: (?) Fore River (Quincy) acc. to Boston city directory.
1954: (?) shipyard worker acc. to Boston city directory.
1963: (?) painter, acc. to Boston city directory.
1967: painter at time of death

At the time of her death Dorothy was a hat worker at Kartiganer Hat Shop.

Their daughter Dorothy writes in a letter from Feb 1994: "My father & mother were both Protestants. My father enjoyed fishing. His interests were mainly working & drinking. My mother enjoyed bowling. Her main interest was also work. My guess is that they were both short-changed in the educational area, but that's life."

Burial*He was buried on 25 May 1977 in Lindenwood Cemetery in Stoneham, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.3
His obituary read as follows:

James A. Craigie, 69, died Sunday in a Lexington nursing home after a long illness. Mr. Craigie was a former employee of Metropolitan State Hospital, Waltham. He was the husband of Louise F. (Harwood) Craigie and father of Earl J. Craigie of Raynham and Doris L. Miers of Florida. He leaves four grandchildren. The funeral service was conducted Wednesday at First Baptist Church by Rev. Joseph Sweeny. Burial was in Lindenwood Cemetery, Stoneham. D.W. Grannan and Son Funeral Home handled arrangements.4
Jimmie attended school up to the 7th grade at Lincoln Jr. High School in Medford, finishing in December 1921. From December to the following June he attended Boston Continuation School and took woodworking classes. His wife Louisa only made it through the 8th or 9th grade.

From papers in the possession of his son Earle we know just about every job Jimmie ever held. The list starts in December 1921 when he was just 14 and he went to work as a stock boy at Congress Shirt on Summer St. in Boston. From some time in 1922 to April 1923 he was a bell boy at the Harvard Club on Commonwealth Ave. in Boston making $12 a week. From April 17-May 11, 1943 he worked as a "wiper" on the ship "Agwisnoon" (spelling uncertain). From July to September of the same year he did the same job on the "Agwiworld" (spelling uncertain). From about Oct 1923 to Dec 1925 he was a window decorator at Liggett's Drug on Washington St. in Boston. From September 1923 to September 1927 he also served in the Massachusetts National Guard, Company "A", 101st Engineers. For six years from December 1925 to February 1931 he did freelance work as a window decorator in the Boston area for the Abbott Window Display Co. of Boston.

At the time of their marriage in 1927 Jimmie was living with his mother at 69 Stanley Ave. in Medford and Louisa was working as a waitress and living at 9 Spring Hill Terrace in Somerville with her parents.

In May of 1931 they were living at 10 Morrison Place in Somerville, according to his grandmother Craigie's probate records. From February 1931 to February 1933 he worked at odd jobs. From February to March 1933 he was a wiper at the United Fruit Co. in Boston. For the next two months he worked as a carnival worker and repairman for A.B. Rogers Shows in Florida, earning $10 a week plus board. From June to October 1933 he was a machine operator at a basket factory in Gloversville, N.Y. From December 1933 to June 1934 he worked as a waiter in a bar at the University Club in Boston.

When his daughter Doris was born in 1935 they lived at the 9 Spring Hill Terrace address and Jimmie gave his occupation as "laundry agent". In June 1934 he had started his own curtain laundry business and kept it up until September 1942.

Between 1936 and 1940 Jimmie and Louisa lived in several different places. In 1936 they were at 41 Hancock Street in Medford. The next year they were at 100 Hudson Street in Somerville. In 1938 they were at 66 Bow Street, back in Medford again, and in 1939 they were in Arlington, Mass. at 10 Willow Place.

On 16 July 1940 they purchased a home at 11 Cedar Ave. in Arlington, a home he would live in for the rest of his life. His widow lived there until October 1986, and their grandson Ken Craigie and his family lived in the house for a while until leaving in September 1990. It was sold after that.

During the World War II years Jimmie left the laundry business for other work. In September 1942 he went to work as a guard at the Watertown Arsenal, Watertown, Mass., and this was followed by welding jobs at the Bethlehem-Hingham Shipyard in Hingham, Mass. (April-July 1943), Ford Motor Co. in Somerville (Jul 1943-Feb 1944), and Barker Steel Co. (Feb 1944-Jan 1945) in Watertown. During the final year of the war (Jan-Nov 1945) he was back at the Watertown Arsenal, again as a guard.

After the war he returned to his laundry business, and as before, he ran it out of his home. He continued in this business until his death. To supplement the laundry business, he worked at different times with the Boston & Maine Railroad as a drawbridge attendant, as a security guard, and at Johny's Foodmaster as a bagger. At some point he worked as an orderly at the Metropolitan State Hospital in Waltham, his last job before he died in 1977.

Louisa worked at the family laundry business until shortly after Jimmie's death. She lived in a nursing home at 5 Colonial Dr. in Westborough, Mass. from October 1986 until her death in 1994.5
