| His obituary appeared in an undated and unsourced newspaper and read as follows:
In Death Not Divided -- A very sad incident occurred here this week, which, we believe, is unparalleled in the annals of the burgh. We refer to the death of Mr. Henry Kerr, Inspector of the Peebles Branch of the North British Railway, which occurred about ten minutes to seven o'clock on Monday night, and was followed by the demise of his wife on the following evening, about twenty-five minutes before six o'clock, the deaths of husband and wife taking place within twenty-three hours of each other. The venerable couple had frequently expressed the wish that they might go together, and it may be said that this wish was literally realised, for Mrs. Kerr passed away unconscious that her husband has "gone before" her. Mr. Kerr was born at Leaderfoot, near Earlston, in Berwickshire, about seventy six years ago, and when quite a young man was engaged in the construction of what was then known as the Gaia Water railway, but is now dignified with the more high-sounding name of the Waverley route. On the opening of that line in 1846, he was appointed foreman surfaceman over the Stow section, and shortly afterwards was promoted to be travelling foreman in the platelayers' department. On the death of Mr. Arthur Foster, about twenty-one years ago, he was appointed to succeed him as Inspector of Way on the line in Peebles district, and that position he has held till about three years ago, when he retired, the Company at the same time recognising the faithful services of their servant, who had been in their employ for about half-a-century, by giving him a retiring allowance. Though virtually laid aside from active duty for the past year or two, his interest in the duties he had from increasing age and growing infirmity, been reluctantly compelled to relinquish, remained unabated, and when able he frequently journeyed over his old familiar ground to see that everything was up to the mark and in perfect working order. From his official position Mr. Kerr was well known to the travelling public, and was deservedly esteemed by all who had the privilege of his acquaintance. Personally of a quiet and unassuming disposition, he was most assiduous in the discharge of his duties, and by his death the North British Railway Company have lost an employee who made their interests his own, and served them faithfully and well for over fifty years. The deceased on his retiral was succeeded as inspector of way in this district by his son, Mr. Adam Kerr, who resides at Leadburn. Mrs. Kerr, who was a native of Stow, and about a year older than her husband, was a bright lively woman, but along with him she fell a victim to influenza and other ailments, and both psased away, as we have said, within twenty-three hours of each other. The funerals took place on Thursday, and in the house in the Northgate which the deceased had occupied, an impressive service was conducted by the Rev. D.Y. Currie of the West United Presbyterian Church of which both were members. The coffins were conveyed to the Station by two hearses, accompanied by the brethren of Peebles Kilwinning Lodge of Freemasons, of which Bro. Kerr was at one time Right Worshipful Master, and a large company of mourners. The spectacle was a most impressive one and was witnessed by large numbers of the townspeople. The interment took place in the churchyard of Stow, and at the Station there a large number turned out to accompany the sad cortege, among those present being Mr. James Bell, Chief Engineer of the North British Railway Company. At the grave, an exceedingly appropriate service was conducted by the Rev. Mr. Workman, minister of the parish of Stow. |
