| From an unsourced newspaper clipping dated 6 Feb 1920:
Recognition of Long Service -- On Friday evening last week the long and faithful service in connection with the North British Railway, extending over fifty years, of Mr. Adam Kerr, permanent way inspector in the Edinburgh district, who has just retired from active work, were recognised at a very happy gathering in McLellan's Rooms, Market Street, Edinburgh. The chair was occupied by Mr. G. Robertson, agent, Leith Walk. In the course of the evening, Mr. Kerr was presented with a handsome gold watch and an umbrella, along with a beautiful gold brooch for Mrs. Kerr. A very happy evening was afterwards spent with song and sentiment, and violin selections, the pleasant proceedings coming to a close about eleven o'clock. Mr. Kerr entered the service of the North British Railway over fifty years ago as a boy on the Gala Water system. His father, the late Mr. Henry Kerr, was afterwards appointed permanent way inspector on the Peebles system, and was succeeded in that position by his son Adam, and when the latter was transferred to the Edinburgh district, he in turn was succeeded by his son Henry as district inspector of permanent way in the Peebles district, which extends from Hawthornden to Galashiels, and includes the Leadburn-Dolphinton branch. We have thus the unique record of three generations of Kerrs filling the same position in regular succession to each other. All three gentlemen have been very favourably known in this district, and many will join with us in congratulating Mr. Adam Kerr on attaining his jubilee as an employee of the N.B.R., and wishing that he may be spared to enjoy many happy years after his strenuous life of half a century in the service of the N.B.R.

From an unsourced newspaper clipping dated 2 Jun 1920:
Presentation to Mr. Adam Kerr, Railway Inspector.
On Saturday afternoon a number of those employed in the Peebles district of the North British Railway, together with a few friends, met in the Cross Keys Hotel for the purpose of presenting Mr. Adam Kerr, late Inspector of the permanent way in the district, with a testimonial of their respect and esteem for him on the occasion of his promotion to the more important and responsible position of Inspector on the Edinburgh section of the railway. Mr. J. Joss, stationmaster, Broomlee, presided over a goodly company of the railway employees. After partaking of a sumptuous high tea, which was purveyed and served in a style which elicited the warmest approbation of the company, the Chairman, intimated apologies for absence from Jr. James Elliot, Mr. George Wilkie, and Mr. Cowe, and said it was intended that Mr. James White, stationmaster at Innerleithen, should preside, but unfortunately he was unable to be present, and that duty had devolved on him. They were all proud of the promotion of their friend Mr. Kerr, a promotion which he well deserved, and of which they in Peebles and Peeblesshire were proud, as they considered it was an honour to them that when a vacancy occurred in an important position on the railway it was to be filled by one from their own district. They were all very pleased that Mr. Kerr's place in the Peebles district was to be filled by his son, Mr. Henry Kerr, who, though a young man, promised well to follow closely in his father's steps. The Chairman then presented Mr. Kerr with a handsome marble timepiece, with beautiful top and side ornaments, and a gold-mounted umbrella, with the hope that he would long be spared to hear the clock ticking, and be sheltered from the battering rain by the umbrella. In acknowledging the presentation, Mr. Kerr warmly thanked his friends for their great kindness, and said that apart from the intrinsic value of the beautiful gifts they had presented to him, he appreciated the kindly feeling which had prompted them. During the twenty-nine years he had been on the Peebles railway, he had seen many changes, and had formed many friendships, and he sincerely trusted these friendships would last as long as life. Although he was now serving the Railway Company in Edinburgh, he would often think of the happy days he had spent on the Peebles line. When in the future he looked on that beautiful timepiece and heard it chime the hours, his thoughts would carry him back to the many kind friends who had honoured him that afternoon, and whose kindness he would always prize and never forget. Mr. Henderson, foreman platelayer, spoke in highly eulogistic terms of Mr. Kerr as inspector, and said that while he looked after the interests of his employers, he was no less attentive to the interests of those under him, and the excellent order in which he had kept the permanent way was an honour to the department... |

| His obituary appeared in an unsourced and undated newspaper and read as follows:
We regret to announce the death of Mr. Adam Kerr at Edinburgh on May 2. Mr. Kerr joined the old North British Railway in 1868 as a boy in the Gala Water district, and in course of time he was transferred to the platelaying squad at Peebles. He was appointed Permanent-Way Inspector on the Peebles Branch in 1894. After serving in that capacity for 12 years, he was promoted Inspector on the Edinburgh, Leith and Granton section, which position he retained until December 4, 1919, when he retired owing to ill-health. During his 51 years of service Mr. Kerr proved himself to be a sound railway-man and gave every satisfaction to the engineers under whom he served. A sad coincidence is that Mrs. Kerr only survived her husband by five weeks. |
