| Edward Pickering appears in the 1905 city directory for Joplin, Missouri living at 410 North Byers, and his occupation reads "press The Globe," which fits with our Edward being a professional pressman for various newspapers. The Joplin Globe of 20 Oct 1904, p.2 had a short human interest news story about him: MET FIRST TIME FOR 25 YEARS. Ed Pickering and Sister Had Not Seen One Another Since They Parted in England 25 Years Ago. Mrs. R. C. McColvin, of Clarksburg, W. Va., arrived in the city yesterday for a visit with her brother, Mr. Edward Pickering, of 410 North Byers avenue, foreman of the press room of The Globe. This meeting was indeed a happy one, as brother and sister had not met for a quarter of a century, separated in county Durham, England, 25 years ago, when Mrs. McColvin left the old home for America. Some years ago Mr. Pickering came to America, but their walks of life led them into different states, and not until yesterday did they see each other. Mr. Pickering was but a boy when his sister left home, and had had only a faint rememberance of his sister, but when she alighted from a Frisco train this city yesterday morning he knew her. Mrs. McColvin will remain here several days. <https://www.newspapers.com/article/joplin-globe/191537967/> |
| From the 28 February 1906 Joplin Globe of Joplin, Missouri: OFF FOR PASADENA. Edward Pickering. Friend to All, Will Remove From Joplin. Edward Pickering, who for the past three years has been foreman in charge of The Globe's press room and stereotyping department. will leave with his family today for Pasadena, Cal., where he will assume a like position with the Pasadena Evening Star. Mr. and Mrs. Pickering have made many friends in Joplin during their residence here, and their sons--Herbert, a member of the High school, and Raymond, in attendance upon the Jackson avenue school--are popular with their associates. Mr. Pickering's work on The Globe brought him the offer from California that he has accepted. A better pressman than he it would be difficult to find, as has been demonstrated by the work he has shown in handling regular and special editions of The Globe. In removing from Joplin Mr. Pickering will leave many friends and well wishers. As a member of the Odd Fellows and of the Woodmen he achieved a high place in local lodge circles. Personally he is liked by every acquaintance, his many sterling qualities compelling the respect and friendship of all who know him.5 |
