No salvation without a new birth."6
According to the Dudley genealogy she "married Rev. Mr. Snelling, ob. s. p." The latter abbreviation means she had no children. There is a Mary Snelling death record in Boston dated June 1804 that says she died in Mount Vernon, Maine and was wife of Rev. Joseph B. Snelling. This is the only evidence at present that confirms her husband's first name. More research is necessary. Her husband may have been Joseph Snelling, who published the book "Life of Rev. Joseph Snelling: being a sketch of his Christian experience and labors in the ministry" in 1847.3

Rev. Charles Atkins, when 21 years old, removed from home to Bucksport, Maine, was there a builder, lived there to 1813-14, then returned to Mt. Vernon and cared for his parents during their lives.

He was living in Mount Vernon when the 1830 census was taken, and a woman of the correct age to be his mother was living with him at the time. In the 1860 census he was still in Mount Vernon, this time with his third wife Deborah and his son Charles Wesley Atkins. He was a farmer with real estate worth $1500 and a personal estate worth $400.4
His obituary appeared in the 16 May 1865 Portland Daily Press and read as follows:

Death of an Aged Clergyman. Rev. Charles Atkins died at Mt. Vernon on Friday last at the advanced age of eighty years. He was one of the oldest residents of the town, having moved there with his father in 1800. He always lived upon the farm which his father first occupied when he moved to Mt. Vernon. Mr. Atkins was a local Methodist minister - a man of great industry - respected by a large circle of relatives and friends.7

Alice T. (Curran) Warner of Quincy, formerly of Dorchester, a homemaker, died Monday at Quincy Medical Center. She was 83. Born in South Boston, she had lived in Dorchester before moving to Quincy 51 years ago. She graduated from South Boston High School. Mrs. Warner was a homemaker. Prior to her marriage, she worked as an operator for the telephone company in Boston. She also worked as a salesperson at Bell Shop in Quincy Center during the 1970s. Birth*Joseph Snelling Atkins was born on 27 January 1805. His date of birth was recorded in the New Sharon records along with those of his children, but probably didn't take place there.1
Marriage*He married first Eliza Blanchard circa 1829.2
Marriage*He married second Eunice L. Carr about 1834-35. The New Sharon, Maine records call Eunice the second wife of "Joseph S. Atkins", and list their first child as being born in February 1835. Right above this family, however, is the family of "Joseph Snelling Atkins" with wife Eliza, whose last child was born in November 1834, only a little more than three months before the first child by the second wife. There are four possibilities here: (1) The New Sharon records, written after the fact, give the wrong dates ; (2) Joseph Snelling Atkins and Joseph S. Atkins are two different people, despite the latter's "second wife" [though the Dudley genealogy states that he married both women] ; (3) Joseph got the woman who was to become his second wife pregnant before the death of his first wife ; (4) The first child born of the second marriage was actually the child of another man. Further research is necessary.2
Death*Joseph died when struck by lightning on 26 July 1851 as he was mowing in his field in New Sharon, Franklin County, MaineG. A note in the vital records reads: "This has been entered at the request of the widow, not having been entered in its proper place."1,2
Joseph was a prosperous farmer who lived in New Sharon, Maine.2

Death*Thomas died.
Birth*He was born on 1 February 1825 probably in Winthrop, Kennebec County, MaineG.1
Marriage*He married Francis J. Lowe on 19 August 1853 in Jefferson County, ArkansasG.2
He is not included with his parents' family in the 1850 census of Canaan, Maine.

At the age of 22 he enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Mexican War on 11 Aug 1847. In his enlistment record he stated that he was born in Winthrop, Maine, which is where his mother was from, so it seems likely that the later birth record made in Mt. Vernon was done after the family moved to town and they were apparently living in Winthrop right after their marriage. He reenlisted on 27 Jun 1848 and at one point served as a private in Jalapa, Mexico. Thomas deserted on 15 Jul 1850 and was captured on 23 Nov 1850 after he reenlisted in Chicago under the name of Thomas A. Henry and was recognized as being a deserter from another company. In that fictitious reenlistment he said his place of birth was Canaan, Maine. While there is no absolute proof that these military records apply to our Thomas, the age, middle name, and birth places of Winthrop and Canaan where his familiy lived at various times make for a high probability. In both enlistment records he was described as having grey eyes, brown hair and a fair complexion. In one he was said to be 5'8" tall and in another 5' 7 3/4". Both described his occupation as laborer.

No further record of our Thomas has been located in Maine. It seems likely that he moved to Arkansas after the war, as we have a Thomas H. Atkins of exactly the correct age (35), born in Maine, in the 1860 census of Dudley Lake, Arkansas. His time in the service would explain how he may have ended up in Arkansas. On 1 Jul and 1 Aug 1857 Thomas H. Atkins of Jefferson County, Arkansas purchased just over 287 acres of homestead land at the Little Rock, Arkansas land office. The land was described as being in "Section Thirty one in Township Four South of Range Ten West in the district of lands subject to sale at Little Rock Arkansas." In the 1860 census he was a farmer and had a wife Francis (24) born in Tennessee and a daughter Sarah (2), born in Arkansas. Also living with them is 23 year old Samuel Lowe, a farmer born in Tennesse, who may be Francis' brother.

A Thomas Atkins died in Baxter, Arkansas 27 Jul 1920. This could be our Thomas aged 95, or perhaps an as yet unrecorded son. Or even someone entirely non-related.3,4,5

And if you google his name you can find a few other short works of fiction published in various old magazines.

After his death his widow moved in with the family of Grenville's brother Frank Atkins in Lynn, Mass., and can be found there in the June 1900 census, taken a few months after Grenville's death. It also said she was the mother of four children, none then living. She was still with them in 1910, at their home on 4 Lakeview Avenue in Lynn, and was still there when she died in 1928.

Birth*Alexander Blanchard Atkins was born circa 1833 in Mount Vernon, Kennebec County, MaineG.1
His middle name comes from the Dudley genealogy, but the 1850 census of Canaan says his middle initial is L.

There was a 26-year-old Alexander Atkins, born in Maine, living in a boarding house in Lewiston, Maine in the 1860 census, working as a factory operative.

Alexander B. Atkins of Canaan appears on IRS tax assessment list in 1864-1866, occupation "retail dealer." One from 12 Oct 1865 lists him as a retail liquor dealer. [Ancestry, U.S., IRS Tax Assessment Lists, 1862-1918]

On 13 Mar 1867 Alexander B. Atkins of Canaan was appointed as Canaan postmaster until someone else got the job in Sep 1868. [Ancestry, U.S., Appointments of U. S. Postmasters, 1832-1971]

His marriage to a Sarah is assumed by a record in the Cannaan vitals mentioning the couple Alexander B. and Sarah Atkins and an unnamed child born in 1866.

Her name at birth was Lucinda Almira, but in mid-life went by Almira. In the 1880 census she was back to Lucinda.

She and her first husband Asa Hussey were living in Canaan, Maine when the 1860 and 1870 censuses were taken. In 1860 Asa was said to be a blacksmith, but in 1870 he was called a "retired blacksmith," despite being only 37 years old. Perhaps he had been injured in the Civil War? No children are listed with them in either census, but they had a 10 week old daughter buried with them in Canaan by the name of Katie.

When she married her second husband in 1874 her residence was stated as Canaan, Maine. Stephen was a carpenter from Milton, N.H. at the time.

At the time of the 1880 census she was living as a widow in Milton Mills, N.H. near the home of her brother Sullivan H. Atkins and his wife Sarah A. (Ricker) Atkins, who was also the daughter of her second husband.

Death*Francis died on 5 March 1923 in Kansas City, Jackson County, MissouriG.3

It is possible that his year of birth should be 1836. The writing is not all that legible. In the Canaan records the family is all grouped together, and before his birth record is a note that his parents "entered March 19, 1836". His birth follows next on April 1st, so it would be logical that it would be 1836, but the "6" looks very different. It looks more like a six than a five, however, so it is anyone's guess. The 1850 census of Canaan gives his age as 15, which would fit with a birth of 1835, but not 1836. The next child is born in February 1837, which would only be 10 1/2 months later if Francis' birth was in 1836, so we'll go with 1835 here. If he was born before his parents "entered", according to the Canaan records, does this mean he was born in Mt. Vernon like his older siblings?

He is probably the F.D. Adkins living in Barnett Township, Illinois in the 1860 census. He was a schoolteacher, age 24, born in Maine, and living with a Goodrich family. During the Civil War he served in Company C of the 33rd Illinois Infantry. He was described as 5' 8 1/2" tall with black hair, blue eyes, and a dark complexion. His occupation was schoolteacher when he enlisted 15 Aug 1861 in Bloomington, Illinois, his residence given as Waynesville, Illinois. In Jun 1863 he was promoted to Captain in Company E of the 53d U.S. Colored Infantry. He served for the duration of the war, mustering out on 14 Nov 1865.

The 1870 census finds Francis living in Kansas City, Missouri with his wife and two children. He was a laborer who owned his own real estate worth $20,000 and a personal estate of $300. They were still there in 1880, and Francis worked as a florist.

When the 1900 census was taken Francis was living in Justice Precinct 04 in Harris County, Texas with his wife, son Kent, and Kent's wife and daughter. He was a fruit grower who owned his own farm. In 1910 they were back in Kansas City, just Frances and his wife, living on Cleveland Avenue.

The 1900 census states that Lydia was the mother of four children, only two of whom were then living. The 1910 census said it was five and two.4
