  2. The Chatham records were recorded "by account given in by Elizabeth Atkins as informed by her Father. Entered February 4th 1765" by James Covel Town Clerk. This means William's birth was recorded 17 years after his actual birth. This is significant because the family Bible referenced elsewhere in his records gives his date of birth as 30 Aug 1748.

A birth record for their daughter Sarah states that she was born at "billingate" in Eastham. Billingsgate was a section of town that later broke off to become Wellfleet And Billingsgate Island was a fishing and whaling community just off the shore of Eastham on the western side of the town. Since Sarah was born there it seems likely that Joseph and his family all lived there at some point.

Marriage*She married Thomas Bea on 25 February 1773 in Chatham, Barnstable County, MassachusettsG. [Chatham recs.]
There is also a Betsy Atkins who filed an intention of marriage with Samuel Ryder, both of Chatham, on 10 Apr 1773. Perhaps if Thomas and Ruth Atkins did have a daughter Elizabeth, she is the one who married Samuel Ryder instead of Thomas Bea. Other possibilities for this Elizabeth are the daughter of Thomas and Thanksful (Snow) Atkins who filed an intention to marry David Smalley in 1768, and Elizabeth (Cobb) Atkins whose husband Nathaniel died in 1762.

There is also the distinct possibility that Elizabeth married both men, with her first husband Thomas Bea dying shortly after their marriage, which caused her to get remarried very quickly. Nothing has been found about Thomas after the marriage in searching ancestry. Several online trees have her marrying both men. Of course that begs the question of why the second marriage intention to Sameul Ryder called her Betsy Atkins rather than Elizabeth Bea.
