She never married. During the siege of Boston in the Revolutionary War she remained in the city and took charge of the family home while her parents and siblings were absent in the country. She was there during the Battle of Bunker Hill. A British officer, with his wife and two children, had been staying there for some time. She saw carts pass her house with wounded soldiers being brought from the scene of the battle. During the night she could heard the balls whistling over the house, sometimes finding them in the garden in the morning.2

Information on some of the vital records of his children come from the Farwell genealogy, and that book states that some of the information came from Farwell family records in possession of Oliver A. Farwell of Detroit, Michigan in 1927, family Bible records of Oliver Farwell, and from the personal knowledge of Miss Olive Farwell of Spokane, Washington in 1915. The dates of birth of many of his children, for example, don't appear to be found elsewhere, so this Farwell genealogy may be the only source for such information that exists.

Silas was a coast trader, owning and commanding his own vessel. His route was between New England and Brazil.5

Is he the Joshua Atkins who married Maria Johnson/Mirna Johnston (two different spellings) in Boston on 16 Aug 1788? Five weeks earlier the same minister had married an Edward Atkins who might be his brother.3

It seems likely that one or both of these are our Edward, but in a city as large as Boston there were some unrelated families living there at the time.
