Silas Atkins
M, b. 1 July 1778, d. by 1869
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Silas Atkins was born on 1 July 1778 in Boston, Suffolk County, MassachusettsG.1 |
Marriage* | He married Maria Josefa Hernandez de los Santos, daughter of Jose Gregorio Hernandez Sanchez Plata and Maria Antonia Venancia de los Santos Rubio Moreno, on 7 January 1813 in Buenos Aires, ArgentinaG.2 |
Death* | Silas Atkins died by 1869.3 |
| Silas engaged in business in Buenos Aires, Arentina, married a woman from a Spanish family and raised his family there. He took the Spanish name of Manuel Silas Atkins Howland, as per the Spanish tradition. Spanish naming custom is to have two surnames - the first being the father's first surname and the second being the mother's first surname. Thus, Atkins Howland. Most Spanish men had two forenames as well, which is probably why he added the Manuel.
There are two sources of information for the list of their children. The first comes from a record in Boston. On 21 Aug 1837 Stephen Badlam of Boston, Gentleman, was appointed guardian of George W. Atkins, Joseph H. Atkins, Martha Atkins, Ovidio P.N. Atkins, Julio C. Atkins, Winifred Atkins, Manuel A. Atkins, and Mercedes Atkins now residing in Buenos Aires in South America. (From Suffolk Co. Probate Records, 378:73). Badlam was appointed to represent their interests in their grandfather Silas Atkins' estate.
The second source is an abstract of the obituary of Silas Atkins which reads as follows: Silas Atkins, for 45 years the manager of Rennie, Tweedie & Co; eldest son of Mr Atkins, the Boston merchant; brothers José, George Washington, Ovidio and Julio; sisters Pepa, Marta and Mercedes Atkins; obituary The Standard 28 Nov 1897, p.181. This is clearly referring to one of the eight children listed above, but which one of the five sons this "Silas" refers to is uncertain.
The names of George W., Ovidio and Julio are in both lists of children, but Joseph H. and Manuel from the first need to be matched to José and Silas from the second. Logically it would seem that José is Joseph, leaving Manuel to be matched with Silas, with makes some sense that the elder Silas Atkins went by Manuel Silas in Argentina. But there is a problem with this in the form of a birth record that has been located for a "José Mathias Silas Hernandez" born 25 Feb 1815 in Buenos Aires to Manuel Silas Atkins and Maria Josefa Hernandez. With a birth in 1815, two years after the parents were married, this is logically their first child, and the obituary refers to Silas as the eldest son. It also appears that the registrar of the birth made a mistake in putting down the child's name with a double-surname of Silas Hernandez, probably assuming that the father "Manuel Silas Atkins" had a double-surname of Silas Atkins, and in such a case the child's first surname would be Silas. The Hernandez obviously comes from his mother. The name on the birth record should more likely have been José Mathias Atkins Hernandez. But does this refer to either Joseph or Manuel from the Boston probate record? The obituary of Silas mentions a brother José, but is that in fact the same José who is in the birth record, or did José Mathias eventually become Silas? There is also a 50-year-old Jose Atkins listed in the 1869 Argentinian census, implying birth in 1819, so apparently a different person than the one for whom the 1815 birth record exists unless the census age was wrong. For the time being it is being assumed here that the birth record of José two years after his parents' marriage is for the eldest son, thus Silas, and that he may be the Manuel referred to in the Boston probate record. The marriage date of the parents also comes from a very secondary source so can not be counted on either. Much more research is necessary, and since it is in Argentina that will be difficult to do.
The family is not found in the ancestry index to the 1855 census of Buenos Aires city. The family seems to have lived in the city of Carmen de Patagones, still in the Province of Buenos Aires, but south of the actual city of B.A.
He is not listed with his family in the 1869 Argentinian census, which was headed by his wife and included four of his eight children. They were living in Distrito 03º (Barracas al Norte), Distrito Federal Sección 19ª, of the Province of Buenos Aires. The Farwell Genealogy states that he died 21 Mar 1832 in Buenos Aires but based on the ages of his younger children in the 1869 census he lived until at least 1840, so we will assume that the Farwell Genealogy is incorrect unless other evidence arises.
Many more Argentinian records on this family are available for viewing on familysearch.org, but require someone who is fluent in Spanish to decipher them. This author has not yet attempted to have them translated for this work.1,2,4,5,6 |

| Their only child who survived infancy was a son Oliver Atkins Farwell (b. 28 May 1811) who provided the author of the Farwell genealogy a lot of family information that has been used here as well. When that book was written in 1929 he had in his possession a silver snuff box that was used by his ancestor Mrs. Winifred (Chick) Atkins in 1741, a fact that helps prove his connection to the family of Henry Atkins.2 |

| This record is for the eldest son of Silas and Maria, but his name is uncertain, as discussed in the biographical notes on his father. His name may have been either José, Silas, or Manuel. According to an abstract of his obituary he was "for 45 years the manager of Rennie, Tweedie & Co." in Argentina.
The 1869 census of Argentina has a 50-year-old Silas Atkins living in Distrito Federal, Sección 02ª, Buenos Aires, and it says his nationality was North American and occupation was a book salesman. This is the wrong age and birthplace for our Silas, so could it be a completely different Silas who came down from America to live here? Our Silas already had been married with children by this time, but it's entirely possible that he was no longer married or living with family and the census taker just assumed he was North American.
Much of the information on his descendants comes from someone's family tree on familysearch.org, so is of dubious quality. This tree does have several original scans of Argentinian vital records attached to some of the people, so for those who read Spanish this would be worth looking at more closely.1,2 |
