Birth* | Nathaniel Atkins was born circa 1722.1 |
Marriage* | He married Elizabeth Cobb, daughter of James Cobb and Hannah Rich, on 5 January 1749 in Truro, Barnstable County, MassachusettsG.2 |
Death* | Nathaniel Atkins died on 26 November 1762.3 |

| The parentage of Nathaniel Atkins is uncertain. No clear record establishing this Nathaniel as the son of Nathaniel and Mary (Crowell) Atkins has been found, but many researchers claim this connection and it appears likely given the repetition of the name Nathaniel in the previous and later generations of this family, the younger Nathaniel's birth in 1722, his marriage in Truro in 1748, and the gap between 1717-1730 in the other known children of the older Nathaniel and Mary. |

Marriage* | She married Nathaniel Atkins, son of Nathaniel Atkins and Mary Crowell, on 5 January 1749 in Truro, Barnstable County, MassachusettsG.3 |
Marriage* | Elizabeth Cobb may have married second Col. David Gorham, son of Shubael Gorham and Mary Thacher, 2 or 17 Dec 1775 in Barnstable or Truro, MassachusettsG. It was David's second marriage as well, his first being to Abigail Sturgis. The Barnstable record has a date of 2 Dec and calls the bride "Miss Elizabeth Atkins" while the Truro record says 17 Dec and calls her the "Widow Betty Atkins."4,5,6 |
Death* | Elizabeth Cobb died on 29 March 1784.6 |
Burial* | She was buried in Cobb's Hill Cemetery in Barnstable, Barnstable County, MassachusettsG.6 |
| It is not certain that Elizabeth was the one who married David Gorham in 1775. In the Truro record, she is referred to as the Widow Betty Atkins, while in the Barnstable record, she is Miss Elizabeth Atkins. Some secondary sources of information about David Gorham call his second wife Elizabeth Stevens, but I can find no original record of such a marriage on ancestry.com, which has original records of Barnstable and Truro available. It appears in the 1888 work "Genealogical Notes of Barnstable Families," by Amos Otis, p.437, which were originally published serially before that date in the Barnstable Patriot, so this error, if it is an error, likely spread from there. Other sources, such as on Findagrave, say it was Elizabeth Cobb. This record of David Gorham's wife Elizabeth on Findagrave says she was Elizabeth Cobb Gorham and died 29 Mar 1784 aged 58 years, 5 months. That calculates to Oct 1725 when Elizabeth Cobb's birth was 29 Oct 1726, so one year off, but that's an easy enough error to dismiss. Also, the photo of the stone on Findagrave is covered with lichen so you can't read her age and have to go by what the Findagrave transcriber wrote. That person may have gotten it wrong and it actually read 57 years. Gorham's first wife Abigail Sturgis did die in 1775 so the 1776 marriage to Elizabeth/Betty Atkins certainly makes sense. So while this marriage seems probably, it is unproven and could use more research.
In addition, on her Wikitree page there is a note that reads: "Some, without source, have claimed incorrectly that this Elizabeth Cobb moved to New Jersey with her family when she was young and married Jacob Lasch, a German immigrant who did not arrive in America until 1752. It is certain that Elizabeth Cobb's family did not move to New Jersey when she was young. Both of her parents died and were buried in Truro in 1749 and 1755; her three brothers all died in Barnstable or at sea while living in Truro between 1725-1763; and of her three sisters known to have lived to adulthood, two married in Truro and one in Boston between 1754-1770. As noted above, this Elizabeth Cobb also married in Truro, to Nathaniel Atkins, whose family were English and had lived on Cape Cod for several generations before he was born in 1720. There is no known evidence suggesting that Elizabeth Cobb ever lived in New Jersey or that she married Jacob Lasch." |

| Based on his entry in the 1850 census it seems likely that he was a brother to Henry Sheik, with whom he lived in that census, and that their mother's first name might have been Elizabeth, based on the presence of a 64-year-old Elizabeth in that same census. If we are to assume that Christopher and Henry are siblings, and Elizabeth is their mother, then that gives us a leg up on searching for them in Germany. Records on Christopher found elsewhere, and described under his record, indicate that he may have come from Baden in Germany, or possibly the city of Frankfurt. There is a Christoph Schieck born in the town of Neckarbischofsheim in Baden on 4 Apr 1823 to Karl Schieck and Elisabeth Anbacher. Karl Philipp Schick married Elisabetha Karolina Ambecher on 24 Nov 1820 in Neckarbischofsheim. (All this from ancestry.com) I did not find them with a son Heinrich, although they did have a son Johann Heinrich born in 1821 and died 1826. There are several Schieck families in Neckarbischofsheim so it's worth searching out. That town is about 130 kilometers south of Frankfurt, as well.
Christopher first appears in the Manhattan city directory in the 1848-49 edition, a shoemaker living at 34 Avenue B. He was at that address for two years, then can't be located in the 1850-51 directory. In the 1850 census of New York City he was a shoemaker living in the 18th Ward. No street addresses were given on that census. Living with him were his wife Charlotte, a 64-year-old Elizabeth Sheik, who is perhaps his mother, and his likely brother Henry, also a shoemaker. Three other German-born shoemakers are living with them. The names are difficult to read but the ancestry web page where they can be viewed transcribe them as Conrad Charle (24), Charles Ritter (23), and Adam Charo (19), although the last two surnames appear to be slightly different than that.
He appears again in the Manhattan city directory for the years 1851-52 on Third Avenue near East 41st Street. By the following year his (presumed) brother Henry had joined him in a business called C & H Sheik, located at 367 Ninth Street, and their occupation was stated simply as 'boots.' Christopher lived at the same address. He remained at that address for the next couple of years until moving to 256 East 11th Street by the time t1856-57 directory came out. This is the first year when there is no longer and entry for "C & H Sheik."
During this period he became a naturalized American citizen on 30 Aug 1858, the same day as his probable brother Henry. They each witnessed one another's naturalization. He lived for four or five years on East 11th before moving to 281 East 12th Street in the 1861-62 directory. He was only there one year before moving to 278 West 37th where he remained for about four years. The 1867-68 directory finds him at 476 Tenth Avenue, then two years later, in 1869-70, at 542 Tenth Avenue, where he was listed for at least two directories. At present directories beyond that point have not been searched yet.
In the 1860 census of Manhattan Christopher and family are living in the 6th District of the 11th Ward, and he is still shoemaker. With he and his wife and their four children are an Anna (64) and Peter (26) Gauch, who are likely relatives of his wife Charlotte - perhaps her mother and brother. Peter also worked as a shoemaker, presumably with his uncle? Christopher. It states that Christopher and Charlotte were both born in Baden, although the other Gauches were said to have been born in Bavaria.
In 1870 the family was living the 2nd District of the 22nd Ward. Again, no street names were recorded in this census. Christopher is called "Otto" here, and I suspect that this is a simple clerical error on the part of the census taker, as the individual listed directly above him has the first name of Otto. As usual he is called a shoemaker, and it repeats the birth information about Baden The Gauches are no longer living with them. In 1880 they were living at 413 41st Street in Manhattan with son George and daughter Carrie. Both Christopher and George were shoemakers. Christopher was again said to have been born in Baden, although his wife Charlotte, whom the 1870 census said was also born in Baden, was born in Bavaria according to the 1880 census. |

| Her maiden name of Gauch comes from her son Charles' death record as well as the names of Anna and Peter in the 1860 census. An abstract of her marriage record on Family Search gives the name as Gough, and an online family tree says Ganch. The 1860 and 1870 censuses say Charlotte was born in Baden while the 1880 census says Bavaria. In 1860 there was an Anna and Peter Gauch living with her who may be her mother and brother, and it says they were born in Bavaria even thouh Charlotte herself has Baden. Her daughter Emma's 1880 census record said her parents were both born in Frankfurt. |
