Birth* | Johann Christoph Tescheck was born on 24 August 1839 in Nakel, Kreis Wyrzysk, Grand Duchy of Posen, PrussiaG.1 |
Marriage* | He married first Alwine Berthe Ottilie Hampel, daughter of Johann Hampel, on 20 April 1866 in Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche in Berlin, Brandenburg, PrussiaG.2 |
Marriage* | John Teschek married second Anna M. Funk, daughter of Philip Funk and Elizabeth Enzian, circa 1889.3 |
Death* | John Teschek died of endocarditis and a pulmonary edema|at home, 165 Stanhope Street on 30 June 1911 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New YorkG.4 |
It seems likely that this is the half-brother of Louis Teschek who also came to live in New York City, and the reason for Louis to change his surname from Gericke to Teschek. The death records for John and Alwine here are assumed to be them, but might not be. There were actually others of the same name living in New York at the time, but these seem to be the most likely, based on their ages and residences. Johann was born in Nakel, Prussia in what is now Poland, and moved with his parents to Berlin when he was young. He apparently came to this country in 1868, a year before his wife and son, probably to pave the way for them to come later. His immigration arrival record hasn't been located. Alwine Tescheck, age 29, arrived in New York on 15 Jul 1869 with her 7 year old son Richard. They departed Hamburg, Germany on 30 June on the ship Allemannia. Their home residence was in Gorlitz, Prussia. In the 1870 census of the 13th Election District, Ward 17 of New York City is the family of John and Alvina Teschig (both age 30) and son Richard (age 9). John's occupation was as a wood carver. The place of birth of all three is listed simply as 'Bayonne', yet it also states that the parents of all three are of foreign birth. So if Richard's parents were foreign born, where is Bayonne? There is a Bayonne in New Jersey and in France, but it seems more probable that is a misinterpretation of Berlin, which is what was stated ten years later in the 1880 census for this couple. Perhaps the census taker was fooled by their German accent. The 1872-73 Manhattan city directory lists John Tescheck, carpenter, living at 607 East 9th Street. The next year he is listed twice. Once as John Tesheck, occupation "chairs" at 140 Wooster Street, residing at the 607 East 9th address. The second entry is for John Tescher, carver, at 607 East 9th. The 1874-75 directory lists John Tescheck, a waiter, living at 440 East 18th Street. The next two years he is listed at the same address, though is called a carver again. In 1877-78 John Tescher, pedlar, resided at 228 second Street. He was not included in the 1878-79 Manhattan directory, probably because he had moved to Brooklyn. On 13 Sep 1872 John Tescheck declared his intention to become an American citizen in the New York County Court of Common Pleas. Then on 31 Dec 1874 he officially applied for citizenship. He was a carver living at 440 East 18th St. in New York City. The application did not give his age or date of arrival. It was from the New York County Court of Common Pleas, volume 434, record 166. The record did not state whether or when citizenship was granted, but the 1910 census did say that he was a naturalized citizen. In the 1880 census of Brooklyn John and Elvina Tishig are living at 202 Stockton Street. John is again a wood carver. They have no children living with them, and it says they and their parents were all born in Berlin. John was age 40 and Elvina 39. A Reinhold Tescheck was in a list of people for whom mail was waiting at the Brevoort Station in Brooklyn. (Brooklyn Daily Eagle, 20 Jul 1884, p.11) Could this be a German name for their son Richard? The 1885 and 1886 Brooklyn directories have John Teschig (1885) or Teschek (1886), woodcarver, at 230 Throop Avenue, Brooklyn. From the Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper, 19 Jun 1887, p.13: a list of unclaimed letters at the Brooklyn Post Office includes "Teschek, Mrs." John Teschek, woodcarver, was living at 288 Vernon Ave. in Brooklyn in the 1889 and 1890 city directories. His wife Alwina was living there in 1889 when she died, and it said she had been a resident of the city for 11 years, meaning, if true, that they moved from New York City into Brooklyn about 1878. When the State of New York took a census in 1892 the family was still at 288 Vernon Avenue, and John was recorded as George Deschek, age 52 a carver born in Germany, with wife Annie and eight-year-old son Charlie. From The World newspaper of NYC, 24 Feb 1895, p.38. An ad that reads: "MOULD-SINKER & modeller on all kinds of picture frames; work done promptly. T. Tescheck (sic), mould-sinker, 193 Stanhope st., Brooklyn." This was probably about John, as it is his address, and the initial of T is an error. From the Brooklyn Citizen newspaper, 28 May 1895, p.5, "Situations Wanted" section, as well as 30 May 1895, p.5: MOULD CUTTER--WANTED, SITUATION BY A mould cutter and wood carver. Address J. TESCHEK Box O., Citizen. The 1899 Brooklyn city directory lists a "Jacob" Teschek, tailor, at 193 Stanhope. This is undoubtedly a misprint for John as no Jacob Teschek has ever been found before in NYC records. The 1900 census of Brooklyn finds them at 193 Stanhope Street still. The spelling of the name is Deschek. John and Anna are there with young daughter Mamie and an older son Charles, age 16.Anna is said to be the mother of three children, only one of whom was then living, so the couple may have had two other children who are presently unaccounted for. John's occupation was given as "Cutter on Frames," and son Charles was a day laborer. The 1905 New York State census butchered the spelling of his name even worse than the 1900 Federal census does, as he can be found under the name Deschert. John, Annie, and 10-year-old Mamie are still at 193 Stanhope Street. John's occupation is given simply as laborer. John Teschek, wife Anna, and daughter Mamie were still living at 193 Stanhope Street when the 1910 census was taken. John's occupation was listed as electroplater in a silver in a silver shop. It said he was a naturalized citizen who came to this country in 1868. It said it was the first marriage for both of them, but this is likely not true in John's case at least. Again it stated that Anna was the mother of three children, only one of whom was then living. From The Chat of Brooklyn, 26 Apr 1911, p.27, May Teschek is listed as one of the guests at a confirmation party for Miss Elsie Vaupel on April 23d at the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs Frederick P. Vaupel of 165 Stanhope St. This Stanhope Street address is the same one that John Teschek lived at when he died at the end of June 1911, but when the 1910 census was taken they weren't there so must have moved there soon after the census was taken. He worked as an electrician at the time of his death. From the Standard Union of Brooklyn, 23 Feb 1914, p.1. Article titled "Lonely Widow Attemps to End Life With Gas" reads "Mrs. Anna Tescheck, 53 years old, who lived alone in apartments on the second floor of 165 Stanhope Street, made an attempt at suicide early to-day by inhaling gas. Tenants in the house detected the odor of gas and traced it to Mrs. Tescheck's apartments. They found her sitting in a rocker unconscious, with a rubber tube in her mouth. Taken to the German Hospital the woman was revived. She said she had been lonely since the death of her husband a few years ago." The Chat newspaper of Brooklyn also ran with the story on 28 Feb 1914 (p.10) with the same basic details, but added "Tenants were awaked by the fumes and sent for Policeman Kessler. He forced an entrance and found the widow insensible in a rocker. Dr. Wrightman, of the German Hospital, with the aid of a pulmotor, succeeded in reviving the woman." Anna apparently survived her attempted suicide as she is found in the 1915 NY State Census living with her daughter May Volk and husband Herbert at 1341 Putnam Avenue in Brooklyn. They were still together at the same address in 1920, but by 1930 had moved to 7815 76th Street in Brooklyn. She has not yet been found in the 1940 census, but when Anna died in 1942 she was living at 185-41 Chelsea Street in Queens, N.Y., presumably with her daughter Mary Volk. |

Her full name of Mary Johanna comes from her marriage record, but it was also recorded at various times as Mamie, May or Mae. From The Chat of Brooklyn, 3 Jul 1909, p.11, Mamie M. Teschek is listed as one of the graduates of Public School No. 123 located at Irving and Willoughby Avenues. When the 1910 census was taken her name was given as Mamie. From The Chat of Brooklyn, 26 Apr 1911, p.27, May Teschek is listed as one of the guests at a confirmation party for Miss Elsie Vaupel on April 23d at the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs Frederick P. Vaupel of 165 Stanhope Street. The Tescheks were living at 193 Stanhope in 1910. From the Times Union of Brooklyn, 9 Jun 1911, p.14, May Teschek is listed as one of the graduates of Long Island Business College. From The Chat of Brooklyn, 8 Nov 1913, p.25, a "Miss Mae Teschek" is mentioned as a guest at a Halloween party thrown by Anna and Harriet Englert of 115 Evergreen Avenue. Mae was said to have won "the booby prize." Her future husband Herbert Volk was also at the party. The 13 Mar 1914 Brooklyn Citizen newspaper notes the marriage license of Herbert Volk, 20 of 145 Bleecker Street and Mary Teschek, 19, of 165 Stanhope Street. When the 1915 NY State Census was taken Herbert and May were living with May's widowed mother Anna at 1341 Putnam Avenue in Brooklyn. Herbert worked as a bookkeeper and May as a stenographer. All three were still there in 1920. Both Herbert and Mamie were now employed as stenographers. A 1924 Manhattan voter list shows them living at 4713 Sprague Street in Glendale, Queens, which is where they still were in 1925 for the state census. Anna was still living with them. Herbert and May gave "office work" as their occupations. The 1930 census finds Herbert and Mary living at 78-15 76th Street in Queens, and Mary's mother Anna was living with them still. They owned their home, valued at $8000, and Herbert worked as a wholesale clerk. No children were listed with the couple in either the 1915, 1920 or 1930 censuses. They couldn't be located in the 1940 census, but the Queens telephone directory for 1939-40 lists them still at 78-15 76th Street. When Mary's mother died in 1942 she was the informant on the death certificate and was living at 185-41 Chelsea Street in Jamaica, Queens. When Mary died in 1993 she was living in Flushing, Queens. |

Marriage* | She married Aaron Cilley on 3 July 1803 in Lee, Strafford County, New HampshireG. On her marriage record she was called Polly York, and both she and Aaron were from Lee.2 |
It is not proven that she is the daughter of Thomas and Molly York of Lee, but we know they had six children and as many as four were likely females. Also, on her 1803 marriage record it stated that she was from Lee. Her daughter Abigail's 1859 death record states that her mother Mary (York) Cilley was born in Nottingham, but that is unreliable. There are a number of deeds in Rockingham County for her husband Aaron Cilley, and some of those include Mary as a named grantor or as a spouse giving up her right of dower. The last of those deeds was dated 22 Mar 1860, so we know Mary was still alive on that date. The first of these deeds was dated 1817, at which time they were living in Epping. The remaining deeds date between 1829 and 1860, at which time they were living in Northwood. These deeds have not been abstracted yet by this author. |
