From the 25 July 1855 New Hampshire Patriot & State Gazette of Concord, New Hampshire: DROWNED.--Yesterday, (Sunday, the 22d) a boy named Charles O. York, about 15 years of age, with a companion, went to the river, just below the Wiers, to bathe. Neither of them could swim, but they waded out to where the current was swift, and York was swept away and drowned. His body was recovered in about half an hour.--Manchester American.

Another story comes from the Dollar Weekly Mirror of Manchester. Boy Drowned near Granite Bridge. Yesterday morning, Sunday, Charles O. York, aged 15 years, was drowned in the Merrimack river, a little above Granite Bridge, this city. He is son of Mr. A. York of Raymond, and worked in the Stark Mills, and was a very steady boy. Of late he had become desirous of learning to swim, and yesterday with another boy went down to where the old canal makes into the river and waded in. They tried to see which could wade out into the deepest water, and he went beyond his depth, and sank, became confused and the current carried him further into the stream. He rose and remained above water a long time, but no assistance came till it was too late. His companion could not swim, but in trying to rescue him came near getting where he was in danger of drowning. The drowned boy has an uncle living here, J. S. York. His body has been carried to Raymond..4,5

Birth*Angeline York was born on 20 November 1829 in Raymond, Rockingham County, New HampshireG.1
Marriage*She married first Frank Bidwell between 1855 and 1860.2
Marriage*Angeline York married second William Augustus Chandler, son of Philemon Chandler Jr. and Susanna Cheney Patch, on 7 September 1861 in Lowell, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.3
Death*Angeline York died of endocarditis on 29 July 1924 at home, 417 Middlesex Street in Lowell, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.4
Burial*She was buried on 31 July 1924 in Old English Cemetery in Lowell.
In the 1855 Mass. state census she was living in Lowell as a mill hand named Angeline York, so apparently wasn't married to Frank Bidwell yet. But the 1860 census has her as Angeline Bidwell living in the home of her second husband William Chandler and his mother Susan, so that probably explains how they met. She must have married her first husband between 1855 and 1860 and he either died or left her but nothing yet has been learned about him.

No mention of any children for her has ever been found.
From the 11 February 1922 Lowell Sun of Lowell, Massachusetts: OLD-TIME MILL WORKER. Mrs. Angeline Chandler Still in Fairly Good Health at Age of 92. Ninety-two years of age, with a record of exactly 50 years as a weaver in Lowell textile mills, and in fairly good health for her years, although complaining of rather poor eyesight, Mrs. Angeline Chandler, a widow, widely known in mill workers' circles and proud of the friendship of a large number of Lowell men and women, today told a Sun man an interesting story of her busy life, now moving on to the century mark.

Mrs. Chandler's last visit to the Golden Cove race track as the guest of Lowell horsemen was about four years ago, as nearly as she can figure it, and she possesses and excellent memory and is well up on past history of Lowell and Lowell institutions.

She had been invited by the local club horsemen, who have been her firm friends for many years, to attend the races and see the sports. A special ticket was presented to her and she was given an auto ride down to the track.

"I had the happiest day I ever had!" said Mrs. Chandler today, recollecting that outing provided so generously by the Driving clubmen. "I had never been to many events of this kind, so I saw every race and stayed until dark. It was wonderful—those horses—and the Driving club people were so kind to me. If I remember correctly, when I was about to start for home, Mr. Frost came up in his automobile and insisted upon taking me back to Lowell, and back I came with Mr. Frost, who has always been so kind with all the other club members, giving me such kindly aid. No one has ever been so kind in helping me through hard times."

The Sun learned that the nonagenarian knows about all the horsemen in Lowell. She has lived on the top floor of the brick building at 417 Middlesex st. for 20 years. At one time, the Lowell Driving club had its quarters on the same floor where Mrs. Chandler leased two rooms. The old men used to inquire regularly about the aged woman and never failed to call upon her and leave little gifts of money, food and delicacies when they visited their club rooms.

For some time Mrs. Chandler used to be the janitress of the club rooms, and took excellent care of them. "I was not the only horsemen and their guests began taking an interest in her affairs. Not long ago, the aged woman was delighted with a special gift, sent anonymously by several members of the driving club."

Upon the kitchen wall of Mrs. Chandler’s bright, clean little kitchen is a large picture of a race horse, presented by the "horsemen" some years ago, members of the driving club. It is practically the only picture in her home, with the exception of smaller framed school enclosures. This old relic was presented one day after the fair in September, 1916, at the old Middlesex North Agricultural society of bygone memories. Mrs. Chandler looked up on the wall today and spied the horse picture, remarking:

"Those horsemen—how I love them all for what they have done to make my poor life happy! Here I have been all these years, unable to work, with hardly any sunshine at all and sometimes wishing I were not alive. And these great, big boys—why they are always remembering me with little things to cheer me up and make my last days pleasanter."

Mrs. Chandler was born in Raymond, N.H., on a farm, daughter of Ahaz York. She came to Lowell alone when but 14 years of age, hearing reports of plenty of work in the local mills and quickly securing a position in the Tremont mills. She worked there as a weaver for four years, and then secured work with the Scott mills and remained there 46 years. With a record of 50 years continuously employed in local mills, she retired from the life of a mill worker and went to housekeeping in earnest. Today her health is very good, and she gets around her little home quite actively. She now has a housekeeper, Mrs. Nellie Rowe, also a native of Raymond, N.H.

Mrs. Chandler was twice married, her second husband, William A. Chandler, passing away 55 years ago. He was a nine-months' man with the Old Sixth Mass. regiment and then joined the Second Heavy Artillery, serving until the end of the Civil War. Her first husband was the late Francis Bidwell.

Mrs. Chandler was interested in Salvation Army work years ago, but belongs to no church or social organizations. Her second husband was for many years a minstrel man and musician, traveling all over the country, playing both the melodeon and piano and appearing in feature acts. He was last with Reynolds' troupe of minstrels.

Mrs. Chandler has traveled quite extensively and spent three winters in Florida, taking rests from mill activities. She remembers many interesting concerts and lectures given in old Huntington Hall. She remembers when troops marched away to war but does not remember ever having seen President Lincoln. While in Florida, she stayed with a cousin who lived about 10 miles from Jacksonville on a Florida farm.

Patrolman Frank Donovan and others who perform duty in the vicinity of the Middlesex Street railroad station all know Mrs. Chandler and frequently climb the stairway to her little quarters to see how she is getting along. More than one stalwart bluecoat, before departing, leaves little gifts for the nonagenarian that always warm her heart.

"I love them all," she exclaims promptly when you ask her about the Driving Club members, the police, and the storekeepers in the vicinity of her home, who are also very kind to her and look out to see that she wants for nothing that she might desire in the way of little comforts and gifts of usefulness.

Mrs. Chandler's eyes fill with tears when she tells you about that famous banquet she served all alone to the Driving Club members some time ago. She cooked the baked beans, pies, cake, bread, etc., and also had meats to offer, and homemade ketchup, and the clubmen didn’t go away from that banquet hungry. It was one of the finest feasts in the history of the club, and Mrs. Chandler was a happy lady when they departed and she found that there was “nothing left over” to spoil.

The nonagenarian has performed all her housework alone until about six months ago.

She remembers the time when Gen. Butler "got her case," as it is called, for a transfer from one mill to another. She claims the mill agent refused to give the transfer, so she went to see Gen. Butler about it, the General being well known to her and other mill girls who needed legal assistance. Mrs. Chandler says Mr. Butler promptly “put an attachment on the mill wheels” one noon, and the mills couldn’t run until her uncle, an overseer, Jacob York, gave her the ticket transfer.

"And Gen. Butler wouldn’t take one penny for helping me, a poor, lonely mill girl who wanted to work with people I knew," said Mrs. Chandler today. "I swore that I wouldn’t return to the mill that refused me the transfer if I starved to death. But Gen. Butler laughed when he heard me say that and told me that he guessed I was too smart to starve.".5

The parentage of Jacob Smith York is uncertain. His name and inclusion here is based on two articles about his niece and nephew, children of his brother Ahaz. In the story about Charles' 1855 drowning in Manchester, NH it mentions that Charles had an uncle then living in Manchester named J.S. York. The other story about Angeline (York) Chandler mentions that she had an uncle Jacob York who once was an overseer in a mill she worked at. The location of the mill wasn't specifically mentioned but the article does say she worked in the Lowell, Mass. millls for years. Whether J.S. York of Manchester and Jacob York, possibly of Lowell, are the same individual is not known, but seems likely. The Jacob Smith York found in the Family Search Family Tree lived in both Lowell and Manchester and was born in 1814 so fits well to be this person. At the time of this writing he was not connected in Family Search to his father Jacob York so this author did that based on the above circumstantial evidence.
From the 28 December 1852 Boston Courier of Boston, Massachusetts: Noble Act. Mr. Jacob S. York of Manchester was one of the returned Californians who were injured by railroad accident at Windsor Locks, Connecticut, on the 30th of October last. His brother-in-law wrote to the President of the Hartford & New Haven Railroad, stating the amount of damage, and the President, though not considering the road legally liable, without hesitation forwarded a check to Mr. York for $200, the amount claimed. Mr. York has mostly recovered from the effect of the accident. In estimating the damage he computed the loss of time, physicians fees, &c, nothing more. [Manchester Mirror].4

When they were married in Durham in Aug 1795 both Samuel and his wife Miriam were said to be from Lee, NH. This is a clue to his origins so he may be an unrecorded child of one of the Lee Yorks. The 1895 death record of his daughter Hannah said that her father Samuel was born in Newington, NH. No Yorks have ever been found in Newington so it seems probable that this is in error. The informant might have confused it with Newmarket, which would make more sense for someone who was living in Lee when he married. It also said her father was a silversmith and that her mother "Ruth" Hall was born in Strafford, NH, which at that time was part of Barrington, NH.

He supposedly lived on the old Sawyer Farm above the North Barnstead Church in 1795 after his marriage - Lot 119 in the First Division.5

On 23 Dec 1795 Israel Avery of Barnstead, yeoman, sold for $300 to Samuel York of Lee, Goldsmith, one half of a sixty acre lot of land in Barnstead in Lot No. 119 in the first division of lots in said Barnstead, the said half is taken off of said lot the whole length of said lot joining the Lot No. 118 and is where I now live with the buildings thereon. Witnesses were John Jenkins and Paul Meder. Signed by Israel and Deborah Avery, recorded 18 Aug 1796. [Strafford Deeds, 23:84] [Note that the deed had the town "Brentwood" crossed out before Barnstead as Israel Avery's place of residence. The following deed with two unrelated people also had a crossed-out Brentwood that was replaced, in that instance, by New Durham Gore. The previous deed actually was for someone from Brentwood, so perhaps the scribe just had Brentwood on his mind.]

There are no Samuel Yorks in NH censuses in 1800, but several towns are missing so he likely lived in one of those.

When he married his second wife in Jan 1807 he was from Barnstead and she was from Barrington, NH. There is only one 1810 census entry in New Hampshire for a Samuel York, and that is in Barrington. It likely pertains to this Samuel. His household consisted of 1 male 10-15, 1 male 26-44, 1 female under 10, and 1 female 26-44.
