Olive York
F, b. circa 1780, d. 5 January 1859
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Olive York was born circa 1780 in Lee, Strafford County, New HampshireG.1 |
Marriage* | She married first Joshua Blaisdell, son of Jacob Blaisdell and Lydia Morrill, on 22 August 1802 in Epping, Rockingham County, New HampshireG.2 |
Marriage* | Olive York married second Moses Cilley, son of Cutting Cilley and Martha Morrill, on 20 October 1831.3 |
Death* | Olive York died of neuralgia on 5 January 1859 in Nottingham, Rockingham County, New HampshireG.4 |
| Her death record as Olive Cilley daughter of Thomas York of Lee places her in this family, and an 1851 deed of Moses Cilley of Nottingham in which his wife Olive Cilley releases her dower, names her probable husband. This deed has not been abstracted here yet by this author. [Rockingham Deeds, 342:391] In the FamilySearch family tree there is a Moses Cilley of Nottingham who married first Susannah Barker and second Olive Blaisdell on 20 Oct 1831. In Jan 1831 Olive Blaisdell of Epping, widow of Joshua Blaisdell, deeded land. [Rockingham Deeds, 264:11] It seems probable that Olive York married first to Joshua Blaisdell and secondly to Moses Cilley. Olive is not an overly common name but it is certainly possible that our Olive (York) Cilley who died in 1859 was married to a different Cilley than Moses. More research is necessary to prove this connection, although it seems highly probable.
The 1820 census of Epping has both an Olive Blaisdell and a Widow Blaisdell listed. Olive has one male under 10, one female under 10, and 1 female 26-45. The Widow Blaisdell has one female 16-26 and one over 45. Our Olive would be 40 years old at this point so is likely the first one. Living on either side of her were Jonathan Winslow and William Blaisdell, who are also neighbors in family deeds.
On 31 Dec 1830 the widow Olive Blaisdell of Epping deeded for $425 to Samuel Plumer Jr., George W. Plumer, and John J. Plumer, all of Epping, traders, 16 or so acres of land in Epping bounded by the road leading from Jonathan Winslow's by the house of William Blaisdell to Nottingham, land of John Blaisdell, Jacob Blaisdell, plus another half acre of Epping land lying on the same road bordering land of Nehemiah French and William Blaisdell, it being the land that her barn stands on. This was all land that her late husband Joshua Blaisdell gained by certain deeds, including from Jacob Blaisdell dated 31 Oct 1815 and 1 Jul 1818. Other land she gained by deed from Joseph Edgerly Jr. of land that he purchased of Greenleaf Blaisdell on 4 Jan 1828. Also all the interest that her late husband Joshua gained by deed from Joseph Edgerly dated 14 Apr 1809. Signed by mark on 31 Dec 1830, the same date she appeard, and witnessed by Louisa F. Mead and Justice of the Peace W. Plumer Jr. [Rockingham Deeds, 264:11]
The following might be a different Olive Blaisdell - perhaps her daughter - given that she is called 'spinster' rather than widow in both the 1848 deed and the one from 1831 that is referenced. On 30 Sep 1848 Olive Blaisdell of Nottingham, spinster, deeded for $270 to David H. Watson of Nottingham, yeoman, 14 square rods of land and buildings in Nottingham bounded by the road leading from Nottingham to Northwood, and land of Jonathan Thompson and Bradbury Bartlett. This was the same land that she purchased of Thomas Ford on 31 Oct 1831. Olive made her mark and the deed was witnessed by Sewell Watson, William Watson, and Joseph Cilley. [Rockingham Deeds, 347:127]
The 1850 census found Moses and 'Elisa' Cilley living in Nottingham. He was 76 and she 70. No occupation was listed for Moses but he had real estate worth $200. A neighbor was Jonathan S. Nay and family, and he appears as a witness to the following deed.
On 4 Apr 1851 Moses Cilley of Nottingham, yeoman, sold $180 to Joseph Cilley of Nottingham a house and barn in Nottingham on the road leading from the Square to Deerfield Parade northwesterly of the path leading from Drown's Mill, so called. The house and buildings were currently standing on Joseph's Cilley's land. Olive wife of Moses gave up her right of dower. Moses signed and Olive made her mark and they both appeared on the same day. Witnesses were Jonathan S. Nay and James H. Butler. [Rockingham Deeds, 342:391]
By the time the 1860 census was taken Olive had died and Moses appears to be living on the Nottingham Town Farm as an 85-year-old illiterate town pauper.
[Research note: Other deeds for Olive and her husband are not yet abstracted here. Some are referenced in the above deeds.] |

Birth* | Levi York was born in August 1792 in Lee, Strafford County, New HampshireG.1,2,3 |
Marriage* | He married second Lucy Frost, daughter of Isaiah Frost and Betsy Morrison, on 12 February 1838 in Lowell, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.4,5 |
Death* | Levi York died of consumption on 5 August 1856 in Andover, Essex County, MassachusettsG.6 |
| On 30 May 1814 Levi York of Raymond, joiner alias laborer, formerly of Salem, Mass., was sued by Ephraim Abbot of Salem, Mass., trader, for non-payment of a $15.12 debt incurred at Exeter on an earlier unspecified date. York paid his debt in household goods and tools which are listed in the case file. [Rockingham Superior Court file 38566]
When the 1820 census was taken he was living in Raymond, NH. with 1 male aged 10-15, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 2 females under 10, and 1 female 16-25. His probable father Jacob York was listed two houses later. They were the only Yorks enumerated in Raymond that year.
The 1840 census finds him in Lowell, Mass. with 1 male 15-19, 1 male 40-49, and 2 females 20-29.
By the time the 1850 census was taken the family had moved to Andover, Mass. Levi and Lucy were living with his son Levi S. York and two others, 20-year-old Franklin Bean, a farmer born in N.H. and 8-year-old Lucinda Marshall, born in Mass. Levi was a farmerf with real property worth $2000 and his son Levi S. was a wheelwright.
The 1855 state census of Massachusetts finds him living in Andover, Mass. as a 66-year-old farmer. Living with him is 38-year-old Lucy York born in Groton, Vt., no relationship stated, although his probate papers show that he was his wife. Also in the same household were Lucinda Marshall, 15 and George Marshall, 10, both born in Andover, and Michael O'Brien, age 16? [question mark in original], born in Ireland. When he died the following year the death record stated that he was 64 years old, a farmer, but born in Andover, Mass. The 1855 census stated that he was born in Lee, NH and since Levi himself probably supplied that information it seems to be more reliable than the place of birth on his death record. His parents weren't mentioned on his death record.
His probate papers show that his widow Lucy was granted administration of the estate. They say that he had only three children and that they were not Lucy's as she was childless herself. [AmericanAncestors.org, Essex County, MA: Probate File Papers, 1638-1881] |

- She was age 40 when she married her second husband in Dec 1857, no parentage or birth place mentioned. 1855 census of Andover says she was age 38 and born in Groton, VT. Maiden name from marriage record, although it might have been a married name if this was not her first marriage. 1850 census says born in Vt. but age isn't really legible. Could be 34 or 39. When she died in 1882 her age was 65, confirming the ca. 1817 birth date, but it said she was born in Bethel, Maine. This source did give her parents and said they were both born in Bethel. Given that earlier records said she was born in Vt. those seem to be more likely to be true. Also, the FamilySearch Family Tree record for her parents shows that her siblings were born in Vermont too. Her parents were married in Jan 1816 in Groton acc. to FamilySearch.
