| William's parentage is currently unknown. His age at death puts his birth around 1790-91, and the death record of his son Andrew states that William was born in Newburyport. On his Newburyport marriage record in 1808 he was said to have been from Newbury. But the 1790 census of Massachusetts does not record any York family other than that of Joseph of Gloucester, and William does not belong to that family. The lack of a York family in the Newburyport area suggests that he was not born there, but moved there after that point, either from a Seacoast New Hampshire area family, or perhaps from an entirely different York family, perhaps as a recent emigrant from England. Given that he spent much of his adult life in Exeter it's reasonable to assume he may have come from an Exeter York family. Both John Carr York and Jonathan Young York of Exeter had males under the age of 10 in the 1800 census of Exeter, although only Jonathan Young York had one aged 10-15. The only other York family close to Exeter with young sons was James in Epping. Another possibility is that William changed his name at some point. Three of his own sons changed their surname to Stone, and there were a lot of Stones in Newburyport so perhaps he was a Stone, or his mother was.
Various trees on Ancestry state that he is the son of Henry York and Margaret Lenderman of North Carolina. Evidence for this assertion has not yet been seen and it seems improbable. The large number of such linkages on ancestry either indicates that there is some evidence for it as yet unseen by this author, or one person made a wild leap and everyone else copied them. The will of this Henry can be found on ancestry here: but it does not mention William. It only mentions younger sons Henry and Leonard by name but other older children who are not named are discussed. The Family Search Family Tree has this family but shows the North Carolina William as living between 1805 and 1881 and moving to Indiana with another family. . The 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses of Lynn, Indiana do show this William as having been born in North Carolina.
When William and Mary were married in Newburyport in Jun 1808 he was said to be from Newbury, Mass. They were still living there when the 1810 census was taken and they had a son under the age of 10. This son doesn't appear in the 1820 census so might have died young. They seem to have had three more children born before the vital records of Exeter, N.H. start recording children for him beginning in 1819.
By 29 Dec 1818 William was living in Exeter as a painter when he was sued by Aaron Porter, a physician from Portland, Maine, for $100 over non-payment of a debt. The original debt was for medicine, a bed pan, and attendance to William's family between 16 Jun 1814 and 16 Nov 1815. William signed in acknowledgement from Exeter on 2 Jan 1819. [Rockingham Superior Court case #47003] Perhaps this medical care was for the son born around 1809 who doesn't appear to be part of the family in the 1820 census.
The 1820 census finds him in Exeter with a family consisting of 2 males under 10, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 2 females under 10, and 1 female 26-44. The male aged 16-25 seems likely to be a sibling of either William or Mary, or perhaps a servant, boarder or worker.
The 1830 census of Exeter shows the family consisting of 2 males under 5, 1 male 5-9, 1 male 15-19, 1 male 40-49, 1 female 5-9, 1 female 10-14, 1 female 15-19, and 1 female 40-49. The identities of his three twins has been determined by this author using a variety of sources. Once it was found that three of his sons changed their surname to Stone information on one of them later in life led to a newspaper article mentioning John Q.A. Stone. In the Salem (Mass.) Register for 30 Jan 1862, p., there is a discussion of triplets that concludes: "Mr. John Q.A. Stone, formerly one of the proprietors of the [Newburyport] Herald, and now editor of the Windsor County (Ct.) Transcript, is one of triplets, two of whom are still alive, and all of whom lived about thirty years. When they were born they came near being blessed with beautiful names. The Bible was searched diligently to find suitable names, and it was settled that they should be called Shadrach, Meshech, and Abednego; but just then worldly thoughts entered the parents' minds, and they were baptised George Washington, John Quincy Adams, and Andrew Jackson." This was originally published in the Newburyport Herald. Available on oldnews.com . This article got one thing wrong when it said that all lived about thirty years, as we know one died young.
The newspaper account of his death read: "In this town, on Friday evening last, very suddenly, Mr. William York."
William was a painter by occupation according to deed records.
The widow Mary was head of household in the Exeter 1840 census. The family consisted of 1 male 5-9, 3 males 10-14, 2 males 15-19, 1 male 20-29, 1 female 20-29f, and e female 50-59.
There was an unnamed child born in Exeter on 16 Oct 1837 in the town records, no gender given, born to someone by the last name of Yorke on that date. Since William died in 1834 it can't be his child but he was the only York having children in Exeter in the years before that so it might be a grandchild born to one of his older sons, or even an unmarried daughter. |

Birth* | George F. York was born say 1804.1 |
Marr. Int. After* | He married Mindwell A. Webber after 30 September 1829, the date they filed their marriage intention in Exeter, Rockingham County, New HampshireG. They were both of Exeter at the time.2 |
Death* | George F. York died before 13 July 1853. His 5 Feb 1852 will was probated on that date. |
| George's parentage is currently unknown. At the time their marriage intention as published he and his fiancee were both living in Exeter. The Exeter town vital records in those years only have a few York families represented, suggesting he is an unrecorded son of John Carr York, Jonathan Young York, William York, or Thaxter York.
He may appear in the 1830 census of Exeter with 1 male 16-20 and a female aged 30-40. If the census taker checked the correct boxes here it means that Mindwell was ten or more years older than he was. Assuming, of course, that this census record pertains to him, which it might not. There is another George York in the 1830 census of Exeter who had a male and a female aged 15-19, along with a male 60-69 and female 50-59. These could be his parents and he and Mindwell living with them. That George is in this database as another unconnected York.
His will was dated in Exeter on 5 Feb 1852 leaving his estate to his wife Mindwell and making her his executor. It was witnessed by Caroline E. Kelly, John P.P. Kelly, and John Kelly. It was presented for probate on 13 Jul 1853, at which time Mindwell declined being the executor so the job was given to someone named Retire H. Parker.
