His place in the genealogy is uncertain, but given his presence in the Exeter/Brentwood area he is very likely a child of one of the sons of either John or Richard York of Brentwood and Epping, or possibly a late son of Richard himself. His age in census records place him as being born between 1770 and 1775. His first appearance in the census was in the 1810 census of Exeter, so where he was living for the 35+ years before that is uncertain, although we know he was in the Army for a few years in the 1790s, as described below. The fact that he doesn't appear in the 1790 or 1800 censuses likely means he was living with family. Both John and Richard York of Brentwood had more than one male aged 16 and over in their households in 1790, so he could have been living in either place. With a birth range between 1775 and 1780 he would have been age 15-20 in 1790, so also could be in a household where he was under 16 if born in 1775. That opens up the possibility that either John Carr York or Jonathan Young York of Exeter could be his father. Neither had older males besides themselves in their 1790 household, but both had males under 16.

There is also a good possibility that he was living in Ohio at some point after his service in the Army out there in the 1790s. The AmericanAncestors.org website has a database of "Ohio: Tax Records, 1800-1850" and on p.613 of the Washington Co. Tax Duplicates, 1822-1824 volume he is listed as the original proprietor of land then owned by a John Salmon. []. Perhaps he acquired the land as payment for his military service, but he didn't stay out there, as he was back in Exeter by 1810. No 1800 census record can be located for him anywhere in the country using online indexes.

His first wife's name is currently unknown. Her death notice in the Exeter Town Records only referred to her as Thaxter York's wife. When the 1810 census was taken the year she died she was still evident in the household as a female aged 26-44. There was also a young boy aged under 10 and a young woman aged 16-25. The younger two might have been his children but there is no proof of it. The Exeter Town Records for 1811 record the death of a 19-year-old "Miss York" dying of consumption on October 19th. This may very well be the 16-25 year old woman in Thaxter's family from the previous year's census. Thaxter's was one of only three York families appearing in the Exeter records in those years, and the only one of them according to the 1800-1810 censuses who had a female of the proper age to be Miss York. [Exeter Town Records on FamilySearch.org, p.100, image 88 of 162, ]

He was living in Epping from 1813 to 1816 as town records show payments made to him in the winter of each of those years for sweeping and taking care of the Epping meeting house. [Epping Town Records, 3: 514, 518, 521, 524]. After 1816 those payments ceased.

On 29 Feb 1816 Jethro Batchelder Tilton of Epping, husbandman, sold for $30 to Thaxter York of Epping, husbandman, "one half of the dwelling house in which I now live in said Epping and one third of the land which I own in said Epping, said land is bounded on land of Abraham Tilton, David Lawrence, & land in possession of Aaron Huntoon, & on the road." Witnesses were William Plumer and William Plumer Jr., and Jethro signed the deed and acknowledged it on the same day before Justice of the Peace William Plumer. [Rockingham Deeds, 212:426] Several years earlier, on 10 Feb 1809, Jethro Batchelder Tilton sold the other half of the house and 2/3 of the land to his daughter Polly York Jr., spinster, which proves the father daughter relationship between Jethro Batchelder and Polly (Tilton) York. [Rockingham Deeds, 203:310]

Thaxter and Polly sell all of this land on the next page of the Rockingham County deed books. On 20 Mar 1817 Thaxter York of Epping, yeoman, and Polly his wife, sold for $60 to Samuel Turner Jr., George W. Plumer and John Jay Plumer, all of Epping, traders, land in Epping bordered by Abraham Tilton’s land on the road, Aaron Huntoon’s land, and David Lawrence’s land, being ¾ of an acre, with all buildings, being the whole of the premises formerly owned by Jethro B. Tilton late of Epping, decd. Witnesses were William Stearns (the Justice of the Peace who recorded the deed) and Olive Tilton. Thaxter and Polly both appeared and made their marks and acknowledged the deed on the same day. [Rockingham Deeds, 212:427]

The family had fallen upon hard times by 1819 in Epping. On 10 Apr of that year the Selectmen of the Town of Epping wrote to the Selectment of Brentwood that "Thaxter York and Polly York his wife, Eliza York, Jane York and one other their Children" who were "now in the town of Epping and are poor and unable to support and maintain themselves" needed to return to Brentwood. The notice said that the Selectmen of Epping had been supporting the family for the past ninety days, expending $11.72 with the costs ongoing. Since they had "no legal settlement" in Epping, "nor having any Relation liable by law for their support, they are therefore considered the proper charge of said town of Brentwood." [Rockingham Co. Superior Court file #47427]

In the 1820 census he was living in Brentwood with his wife and three young girls under 10. If that young boy who was in his household ten years earlier was indeed his son he was not there in 1820. His family was again found in Brentwood in 1830, listed under Baxter York. He and his wife were aged 50-59 and they had one female 10-14 and 2 females 15-19. By the 1840 census of Brentwood all the children were out of the house and it was just Thaxter and his wife aged 60-70.

The 1821 Brentwood Town Meeting voted to purchase or build a house for the town paupers and also voted that the families of Richard Bean Jr. and Thaxter York be moved into this poor house as soon as it was ready. [Brentwood Town Records, 2:105-6]

In the 18 Sep 1850 issue of the Daily Evening Union newspaper of Newburyport, Mass., the following notice appeared on p.2: "Thaxter York, a pensioner for services rendered the United States under General Wayne in the lndian War, from 1791 to 1795, had his thigh badly fractured last Friday, in this town, by being purposely thrown from a wagon by an inhuman man with whom he was riding. [originally published in the] Exeter News Letter. [MyHeritage.com, ]

On 5 Jan 1855, just three weeks before his death, Thaxter was living in Kingston, N.H. when he deposed under oath relative to the military service of Josiah Clark of Epping. In it he said that "I enlisted into the army of the United States of North America in the second Regiment of the New Hampshire Militia and in the Company of infantry commanded by Captain Jonathan Cass of Exeter New Hampshire (father of the Hon. Lewis Cass) in the year 1791 and remained in said service in the Northern States and territories during the Indian war, and am now receiving a pension from the Government of the United States for my services." He went on to testify that Josiah Clark served in the same company as Order sergeant. [Rockingham Deeds, 371:355-6] The Northwest Indian War that was ongoing in 1791 when Thaxter enlisted went badly for the soldiers in that year, culminating in one of the worst defeats in the history of the American Army at the so-called St. Clair's Defeat in November. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Clair%27s_defeat] There were only 24 out of the thousand soldiers who escaped uninjured. Whether Thaxter was there or not is unknown at present. We do have evidence that he was still in the army in October of 1793. On 17 Oct 1793 he was part of a convoy of soldiers taking supplies between Fort St. Clair and Fort Jefferson when the Natives attacked them at a place called Forty Foot Pitch, which is in Ludlow Springs, Preble County, Ohio. The Americans were badly defeated and their commanders and several soldiers killed. Among the names of the privates is Thaxter York, who along with four others were reported as missing after the engagement. [Ohio Archæological and Historical Quarterly, Vol. 32, 1923, p.508, , date viewed 20 Mar 2023]

According to documents available online at ancestry and familysearch he started receiving his military pension as early as July 1840, and that document referred to his rank as being a Private. [Ancestry.com: U.S., Revolutionary War Pensioners, 1801-1815, 1818-1872, T718: 1818 - 1872, 03: Revolutionary War, 1820-1842, ] A later payment ledger from the 1850s gives his date of death, at which time the payments ended. [Ancestry.com: U.S., Revolutionary War Pensioners, 1801-1815, 1818-1872, T718: 1818 - 1872, 11: Invalid Pensioners, 1843-1856, ]

The birth dates of their two younger daughters Eliza and the one whose name is presently unknown are between 1811 and 1815 based on their having two daughters aged 15-19 in the 1830 census. Which of the two is the older is unknown, however, so their birth order here is a coin toss. Their younger daughter Jane's birth is estimated as 1818 based on her own later census and death records, and she would be the 10-14 year old in the 1830 census.

Abner and Jane were living in Raymond, N.H. when the 1850 census was taken, with their two month old daughter Mary. Abner was a labourer with no real estate. Five years later they were living in Amesbury, Mass. when the 1855 state census was taken. Abner's occupation appears to read 'Horsler' and they had children Josephine (5) and Lavina (3). They were back in Raymond in 1860 with their children Josephine (10) and Francis (7). Abner was a labourer at the time with a personal estate of $50, far less than his neighbors.

On 29 May 1815 the Selectmen of the Town of Gilmanton, N.H. sent notice to the Selectmen of Brentwood "that Miss Dorothy York , daughter of Daniel York of said Brentwood, has been sick with a distressing lingering complaint and continues to be unable to provide for her support in her Sickness, and that the Town of Gilmanton has expended forty dollars for the said Dorothy York for her support in her Sickness, which sum has been expended within ninety days from the date hereof." Such notices were sent as a way for towns to recover costs expended for the care of non-residents living in their communities. Apparently the notice was delivered to the wrong town as on the following 30 Oct they sent a nearly identical notice to the Selectmen of Exeter, where, apparently, Daniel was really living at the time. By this point they had expended $53 on her care. What became of her case, or of Dorothy herself, after this point, is unknown at present. [Warning out notice in New Hampshire Archives collection.]

Birth*Shadrach York was born on 11 January 1801 in MaineG.1,2
Marriage*He married Betsey Harper circa 1822.3
In the 1820 census Shadrach was living alone in Mexico, Maine, next door to his brother Gideon, who was also alone. They were farmers. He was still in Mexico in 1830, now married with three young children.

The births of their children were recorded in Mexico, Maine, but as they were all listed as a family group the actual births might have taken place elsewhere. But since his father had been living in Mexico since around 1811 (based on a statement in his pension papers) it seems likely that all of Shadrach's children were born there.

At some point between the 1840 and 1846 they moved to Ohio. Shadrach appears on a 1845-46 tax list in Solon, Ohio. The next year he was in Warrensville and in 1850 the family was enumerated in the census in the town of Orange, Ohio. Shadrach was a farmer at the time.
