This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | David York was born between 1766 and 1784.1 |
| In a deed dated 6 Apr 1811, Rachel York of Brentwood, widow of Richard York, sold for $100 to David York of Brentwood, yeoman, two pieces of land in Brentwood on the road (called the croproad) leading to Epping. One piece of 2¾ acres and another of 4¼ acres, “are to contain the whole of the real Estate that fell to me & was set to me from the Estate of my late Hond. Father Jonathan Wadley late of said Brintwood Husbandman Deceased, & divided from the rest of his Estate by Division Deed from my Brother Robert & John Wadley to me & my late Husband Richard York decd. dated the 18th day of April A.D. 1767.” Witnessed by Lydia Pinder and Nathaniel Parker. Rachel made her mark and appeared before Justice of the Peace Nathaniel Parker to acknowledge the deed on the same day. [Rockingham Deeds, 195:23]
He is presumably the David York whose family is recorded in the 1810 census of Brentwood. He is listed there with one male 9 & under, 1 male 26-44, 1 female 9 & under, one female 10-15, one female 26-44 and one female above 45. This sounds like a family with three children aged 1-15 and an older family member living with them, perhaps Rachel (Wadleigh) York. This David would have been born between 1766 and 1784.
He is probably the David York of Brentwood, late of Tuftonborough, NH, yeoman, who on 30 May 1816 was sued by Nathaniel A. Haven of Portsmouth, Esq., for non-payment of a $60 debt David incurred at Portsmouth on 22 May 1811. Judgment was found for Haven in the amount of $73.19. David signed the original IOU with a mark in the shape of a cross with the horizontal bar in the middle. There is a note on the case file that reads "Tuftonbro, inquire at lot No. 39" with no explanation as to what that may mean. [Rockingham Superior Court file 40379] To date no records from Tuftonboro have been located for a David York. There were other Davids living closer to Tuftonboro during this period but his being from Brentwood as well makes it likely that it is this David.
There is no proof yet that he is son of Richard and Rachel, but he is being placed in this family on the proability that Rachel was selling to her son. But he could also be a nephew or other relation. His marriage to Susanna Shackford in 1795 is also not proven, but there were no other likely David York's living in the Brentwood area at the time. He does not appear in the 1800 census. |

Death* | Lavinia York died of paralysis on 12 October 1883 in Haverhill, Essex County, MassachusettsG.5 |
| When the 1850 census was taken Lavinia and William were living in Boston with an 8 year old male William B. Cadmus, likely a son. William Sr. worked as a hair dresser.
When the 1855 Mass. state census was taken Lavinia was apparently a widow as she and her son were living in Haverhill, Mass. in the household of her sister Elizabeth and her second husband Thomas Dresser. She was still with them in the 1860 census, but her son William was not.
In 1870 the census found Lavinia and her second husband Edward Gould living in Lawrence, Mass. in the same house as her son by her first marriage William B. Cadmus and his wife Henrietta and two-year-old daughter Josephine. Lavinia and Edward both gave their occupation as "Dry & Fancy Goods Dealer" with real estate worth $2000 and personal estate worth $3000.
When the 1880 census was taken she was living in Exeter, N.H. with her sister Sarah Ann Thing and her husband Zebulon on Epping Road. |

Marriage* | She married second Josiah T. Ricker, son of Charles Chadbourne Ricker and Mehitable Cooper, on 1 February 1860 in Haverhill, Essex County, MassachusettsG.1 |
| She was likely the Mary Hook in the 1850 census of Brentwood, living with her mother and father, so may have been a widow at that point given that in her father's will made the following year she was referred to as his daughter Mary Jane York. But when she married her second husband in 1860 her name on the marriage record was Mary J. Hook. He was a shoe cutter at the time and they were both living in Haverhill. It was the second marriage for both of them. |
