WOLFEBORO -- Margaret Carmichael Emerson, 91, of Pleasant Street, died June 7, 2005, at her home. She was born Feb. 25, 1914, in Greenwich, Conn., the daughter of George E. and Helen Fox Carmichael. She was a 1931 graduate of Greenwich Academy and received a bachelor of arts degree from Wellesley College in 1935. She studied at Boston Museum of Fine Arts and at Woodbury School of Art in Ogunquit, Maine. She taught English, dramatics and tap dancing at Lebanon Academy in West Lebanon, Maine. In Wolfeboro, she taught preschool from 1939 to 1941. She moved to Strafford, Conn., in 1942, where she was an isometric perspective drafter on Sikorsky helicopters purchased by American and British armed forces during World War II. She and her husband lived in Acton, Maine, before returning to Wolfeboro in 1947. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, Carpenter School PTA, Girl Scouts, and Boy Scouts. She was a founding member of the Drama Workshop. In the 1960s she and her husband bought and operated the Hitching Post Country Store in Center Ossipee. She also designed several homes in the Wolfeboro area. She was a professional genealogist and a freelance writer. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert B. Emerson, whom she married in 1944. Family members include a son, Christopher Emerson of Remsen, N.Y; three daughters, Jennifer Jones of Geneva, Ala., Gail Johnson of Wolfeboro and Robin Hunter of Tuftonboro; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Douglas Carmichael of Topsham, Maine. SERVICES: There are no calling hours. A celebration of her life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at her home, 24 Pleasant St. Memorial donations may be made to The New Hampshire Historical Society and The Wolfeboro Historical Society.3 |
