BIDDEFORD: Margaret "Peg" Stackpole Wallingford, 92, of Auburn passed away peacefully on Tuesday May 10, 2016. She was born on September 4, 1923 a daughter of the late Miner and Ruth (Batchelder) Stackpole. She grew up on 143 Cony Street in Augusta, Maine, and graduated from Cony High School. She attended University of Maine, where she met her future husband, Otto Wallingford, in chemistry class. She transferred to University of Pennsylvania and graduated with an occupational therapy degree in 1945. She began her career at The Hyde Home, working with disabled children. She married Otto Wallingford in 1948, and they lived in Auburn on Perkins Ridge and Taylor Pond , while raising their five children. Peg loved being a mom, and imparted to them her strong ethics of compassion to all and her love of music, literature, dogs, nature and sports. Peg also worked at the Madison Street School and Pathways over the years, following her passion to help those with disabilities. Peg had a keen awareness and love of the outdoors, and loved to spend time outside, whether playing tennis, cross country skiing, watching birds, or spending time with all the Golden Retriever and Newfoundland dogs over the years, and the Golden puppies she raised. Her positive attitude was pervasive and contagious, even about a gloomy weather day, often commenting that the "sky was just about to clear." She always had music playing in the house, from classical to musicals, and she played the cello and the piano. Peg was an active volunteer in many organizations, including being a Girl Scout Leader, and volunteering for the Auburn Public Library. She traveled with her husband, Otto, including multiple RV trips to Alaska. Otis Wallingford
M, b. 17 September 1872, d. 20 October 1950
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Otis Wallingford was born on 17 September 1872 in Alfred, York County, MaineG. His date of birth comes from his gravestone, while his place of birth and parentage is from a family group sheet filled out by his son Harvey. That sheet gives his birthdate only as 1874, so the place could be wrong as well.1 |
Marriage* | He married Mary L. McKenney, daughter of George R. McKenney and Alma Reeves, on 26 January 1893 in Springvale, York County, MaineG. Mary would have been not quite 15 at the time of her marriage, which seems to be too young. Her birth date comes from a gravestone and her marriage date comes from the Maine Archives marriage index on the Internet, so one of the two could be in error. Her son Harvey wrote that she was born in 1877, which would help out by one year. He also wrote that their first child, Harvey himself, was born in August of 1893, seven months after they were married, so the marriage date probably isn't any later. It was probably a situation where they 'had to' get married. At the time they were married they were both living in Alfred, Maine.2 |
Death* | Otis died on 20 October 1950. He was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Alfred, Maine with his wife Mary, son(?) Harry O., John H. Stevens and his wife Lillian B., and a child named William Wallingford Shaw. How these others are related is unknown at present.3 |
| He was a farmer living in Alfred, Maine in 1905 according to a town directory. In that directory Otis and his wife Mary are listed with all four of their children.4 Otis was still in Alfred when Charles Wallingford contacted him for information about his 1942 Wallingford genealogy.5 |

This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Mary L. McKenney was born on 29 December 1878 in Alfred, York County, MaineG. This date comes from her gravestone. A family group sheet filled out by her son Harvey says she was born in Alfred, Maine on 29 December 1877 and also gives her parentage. The birth year he gave for his father Otis differed from the gravestone as well, so he may have been wrong here too.1 |
Marriage* | She married Otis Wallingford, son of Daniel Wallingford and Abigail F. Jacobs, on 26 January 1893 in Springvale, York County, MaineG. Mary would have been not quite 15 at the time of her marriage, which seems to be too young. Death* | Mary died on 20 April 1968 in Lewiston, Androscoggin County, MaineG. Her name and birth date are on a tombstone in the Evergreen Cemetery in Alfred, Maine with her husband Otis, son(?) Harry O., John H. Stevens and his wife Lillian B., and a child named William Wallingford Shaw. How these others are related is unknown at present. The source of this information only records her birth date and since that source was published in 1995, long after she died, she may have been buried elsewhere.34 |
