| When the 1850 census was taken they were living in Exeter with four children on real estate worth $2800. They were still in Exeter in 1860, on real estate worth $5000 and with personal property worth $1500. They had five children with them now, as well as 26-year-old Ellen York, born in Maine, who is currently unplaced in this genealogy but likely a relative of Sarah.
In 1880 Zebulon and Sarah were living on Epping Road in Exeter with one son and 71-year-old Lovina Y Gould, Sarah's sister. Zebulon was still a farmer. This record stated that Sarah was born in Maine and that both her parents were born there as well. |

The 1880 census gives age as 69 but says born in Maine. Her 1891 death record gave her age as 79 and stated that she was born in Newburg, Maine. Her parents are named on her death record.

Birth* | Ezekiel York was born circa 1814 in New HampshireG.1 |
Marriage* | He married Nancy Davis, daughter of William Davis and Sarah Bryant, on 15 August 1838 in Lowell, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.2,3 |
Death* | Ezekiel York died on 5 October 1882 in Biddeford, York County, MaineG.4,5 |

| While we know that this Ezekiel's father did have a son Ezekiel born around 1814 proof has not been found that he is the same man who became a musician and married Nancy Davis. It seems highly probable, however, based on what we do know of the man.
At the time of their marriage they were both living in Lowell. The Exeter-NewsLetter account read "In Lowell, Mass. by Elder T. Cole, Mr. Ezekiel York to Miss Nancy Davis, formerly of this town." Whether they were both from Exeter, or just Nancy, is not clear.
The 30 Dec 1871 issue of The Portland Daily Press, p.3, has a brief history of the Portland Band. At one point it says "In January, 1843, the Band removed their headquarters to the ward room of Ward 5, corner of Spring and South streets: Ezekiel York was chosen Leader, vice Bradley, who declined re-election." []
When the 1850 census was taken Ezekiel and Nancy were living in Haverhill, Mass. with three children. Ezekiel gave his occupation as Musician. Based on the birth places of their children in that census they were living in N.H. about 1839, in Mass. around 1842, and in Maine about 1845.
The Boston Courier of 22 Sep 1851 reported on a local Jubilee and included in part on p.4 "Harvard College was largely represented, and the delegation of students, accompanied by the Mechanic's Brass Band, Ezekiel York, leader, followed the Mercantile Library Association." [Oldnews.com, ]
The 1860 census found the family of five in Biddeford, Maine, with Ezekiel still a musician and the birth places of their three children unchanged. All three of the children had "Operative" as their occupations. Living with them were two other 'operatives,' Sarah Mitchell, age 21, born in Maine, and Deborah Goodwin, age 17, born in N.H. Also there was James Tebbetts, age 21, a wood turner born in Maine.
Ezekiel served as a musician during the Civil War, enlisting in the 5th Maine Volunteers on 14 May 1861 and serving until his discharge on 30 Apr 1862. His widow Nancy was listed in the 1890 Veteran's schedule for Kittery. [Ancestry.com, 1890 Veterans Schedules of the U.S. Federal Census, , scan of original record.>
An 1866 ad in The Union and Journal of Biddeford advertises the "Biddeford Cornet Band" led by J.P. McCrillis and states, "MUSIC furnished for all occasions, either as Brass or String. Application may be made to J.P. McCrillis, John Barker, Ezekiel York, or Joseph Gilpatrick." [Newspapers.com, 9 Nov 1866, p.4, ]
The 3 May 1918 Biddeford Weekly Journal (p.3) includes the obituary of the "oldest man in Biddeford," Charles Beaumont, and at one point states: "If there was an older musician in this part of the country than Mr. Beaumont his identity is unknown. He was a charter member of the famous old English band organized here in 1865. He played B flat baritone and was assisted by Ezekiel York and William Warren in organizing what is now Painchaud's band. Mr. Beaumont well remembered the noise that band made and the admirers it had on the sidewalk as it indulged in practice in the old brass foundry then located above the McKenney & Heard store." ]
The family was still living in Biddeford in 1870, with Ezekiel still a musician. The only one of their three children living with them at the time was Addie, who worked 'at home.' Also with them was one year old Willie E. Otis, no relationship given, but as she was listed right after Addie it could be her child. Her name was given as York, however, not Otis. Willie was born in Maine. This census reports the value of real estate but Ezekiel had no such value so might have been renting.
The Portland Daily Press of 22 May 1879 (p.4) has this notice in their Saco and Biddeford news section: "Wednesday, May 21. Mr. Ezekiel York, formerly of Biddeford, and leader of the bands in this city for over twenty years, has returned to Saco, occupies the cobbler shop on Pepperell Square known as "the hole in the wall" and will lead the band soon to be organized in Saco." []
By the time of the 1880 census they had moved to Saco, Maine, living on High Street. Ezekiel and Nancy were living alone without their children now, his occupation still as musician. |

Marriage* | She married first William S. Girdler on 27 November 1842 in Brentwood. Their marriage intention was filed in Haverhill, Mass. on 5 Nov 1842, at which time Elizabeth was said to be from Brentwood, N.H.2,3 |
Marriage* | Elizabeth R. York married second Thomas Newman Dresser, son of Enoch Dresser and Elizabeth Bridges, on 21 July 1853 in Boston, Suffolk County, MassachusettsG. |
Death* | Elizabeth R. York died of consumption on 12 February 1877 in Haverhill, Essex County, MassachusettsG.4 |
| When the 1850 census was taken Elizabeth and her husband William Girdler were living in Haverhill, Mass. where he worked as a carpenter and they owned real estate worth $1000. Seven year old William H. and 2 year old James R. were living with them, presumably their children, as well as Alfred and Clara York, who are probably Elizabeth's brother and wife.
When they married in 1853 Elizabeth and her second husband Thomas were living in Haverhill where he was a shoemaker. The 1855 census found them still living in Haverhill with Elizabeth's 12-year-old son by her first marriage William Girdler, as well as her widowed sister Lavinia Cadmus and her own 14-year-old son. Thomas gave his occupation as shoe cutter. He likely worked in a shoe factory. In the 1860 census they were still in Haverhill with a new two-year-old son Herbert N. Dresser. Her son William Girdler was with them, as well as her sister Lavinia Cadmus and three other seemingly unrelated women, one of whom gave her occupation as servant. In 1870 they were still in Haverhill and Thomas was said to be a 'leather dealer.' They had real estate worth $30,000 and personal estate worth $5000. When he died six years later his occupation was again shoemaker. |
