Death*Alfred died on 30 April 2003 at University Community Hospital in Tampa, Hillsborough County, FloridaG.3
Al first came to this country in January 1912 as an infant with his parents and the family settled in Glens Falls, NY. They traveled back to Italy around Easter of 1915. At this time World War I was in progress but Italy was not yet a part of it. Unfortunately Italy soon became a part of the war, trapping Al and his mother in Italy for the duration. His father somehow managed to get out in time and waited for them in this country. They returned to America in 1918 as soon as it was possible to do so and resettled in the town of Fort Ann, NY, near their previous home of Glens Falls.

Al attended public schools in both Italy and New York. In the late 1920s he returned to Italy to study languages at Ovid College in Sulmona. He completed his course work but an unexpected conflict between the date of his final exams and his pre-booked passage home prevented him from obtaining his degree. Later in life he was offered an honorary degree from the school but refused it on principle.

Back in America he moved to Malden, Mass in June 1929 and attended the Coyne Electrical Engineering School in Boston for two years at the beginning of the Depression. Around 1931 or 32 he began a 42 year career with the Esso (now Exxon) Corporation. He immediately went back to school, studying chemistry at a variety of schools, eventually getting a degree. During the 1930s he worked overseas in such places as Libya, Iran and Sumatra. He used his language skills as an interpreter, and also worked on oil well exploration crews.

On 13 February 1936 Al married his first wife Marjorie Esther Davis in Newburyport, Mass.4 She was born 27 April 1919 in Malden to Henry Kimball Davis and Edith Marguerite Dolloff.5 They lived on Lynn Street in Malden and later bought a home at 12 Fairfield Avenue in Malden. They had a son Alfred Lloyd Paolin born in Malden on 7 August 1936.6 Their son eventually had three children of his own, two girls and a boy. Al and Marjorie were divorced in February 1938.1
His obituary appeared in the 3 May 2003 St. Petersburg Times and read as follows:

PAOLIN, ALFRED, 91, of Clearwater, formerly of Tampa, died Wednesday (April 30, 2003) at University Community Hospital, Tampa. Born in Sulmona, Italy, he moved to Florida in 1985 from Malden, Mass. He retired as an oil blender for Exxon after 42 years. He operated the Linden Youth Club, coached soccer at Malden Catholic High School and orchestrated fundraisers for St. Jude's Children Hospital. He served on the Linden Improvement Association and created the Malden Taxpayer Association. He was a member of the Malden Auxiliary Police and was the Malden Liquor Board inspector. He was a 32nd-degree Mason with Eastgate Lodge 355 F&AM, Clearwater, was a Shriner with the Egypt Temple Valley of Tampa, Clearwater Shrine Club, and attended Light of Christ Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Eleanor; a daughter, Ellie Hurley, Lutz; a son, John, Massachusetts; a stepson, Alfred LaCarose, Concord, N.H; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. When they were married in 1939 Al was still living at 12 Fairfield Avenue in Malden and Eleanor was living with her parents on 123 First Street in Melrose. The 1940 census found them at the 12 Fairfield address. Al's parents were living with them. Al had completed two years of college and worked in an oil refinery. Their name was spelled Paolini in the census. On 9 Jul1940 [Middlesex Co. South, Mass. Deeds, 6409:185] they bought a different house across the street at 7 Fairfield Avenue where they lived until June 1985. For many years they created an elaborate Christmas light display here that was featured on the Boston television news every year.

In the mid 1950s they purchased a beauty shop in Saugus that Eleanor owned and managed until about 1975. It was named the Cliftondale Beauty Shop. Al continued to work for Esso, retiring in 1976 as manager of a compounding plant. During World War II he got a deferment because of his work with jet fuel with the company.

They moved to 2253 Norwegian Drive, Bldg. 89, Apt 73, Clearwater, FL, 33575 in June 1985 and were living there in 1995. At that time they would spend a few months each summer living with relatives in the Glens Falls, NY area.

After Al died Eleanor moved to Tampa, Florida where in 2003 she was living at 16001 Lake Shore Villa Dr., Apt. 228.

Birth*Ann Pearle Carter was born on 21 June 1885, probably in Natick, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG. The name on her birth certificate reads "Alba Pearl", yet she went by Ann Pearle on her marriage record, and, more familiarly, by just Pearl. There are two birth certificates for her in the state record books, one recorded in Natick and the other in Lynn, each giving that respective town as her birth place. She gave Natick as her birth place on her marriage certificate, however, so we will assume that to be the correct one.1
Marriage*She married second William Edmond Craigie, son of James Christie Craigie and Mary Craigie Harrold, on 11 November 1936 at 239 Main St. in Melrose, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG. Pearle was a good friend of Beulah, William's first wife, which is how they met, but the marriage didn't work out and it ended when they were separated in November 1938 and were divorced the following March 24th.2
Death*Ann died of a heart attack on 2 July 1970 at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital in Melrose, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG. She was living at 172 Porter St. in Melrose at the time of her death. She was buried (cremated) at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett, Mass.3

Birth*Frank Livingstone Craigie was born on 12 August 1883 at home, in the rear of 36 Chambers Street in Boston, Suffolk County, MassachusettsG.1
Marriage*He married Beatrice Blanche West, daughter of Elijah Maxwell West and Annie Laura Gough, on 20 June 1914 at the Church of the Stranger in New York, New YorkG.2
Death*Frank died of colon cancer on 25 September 1945 at Choate Memorial Hospital in Woburn, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG. He was buried September 27 in Oak Grove cemetery in Medford, Mass. He was buried in the Mystic Lawn section of the cemetery, in the same plot as his mother, and next to his father and his sister Mary Jane. His name, however, is on the headstone where his wife is buried rather than where he is actually buried.3
Frank often went by the name of Francis when he was young, growing up in the Boston area, Concord, NH, and Medford, Mass. According to his son and daughter his hobby was music, for which he had some talent. At the age of 12 or 13 he was in the boy's choir at Tremont Temple in Boston, and later in the choir of the Trinity Episcopal Church, also in Boston. He had an outstanding voice and was offered a scholarship by the Trinity Episcopal church to go to college and study music. His parents refused the offer however because they were not members of that particular church, probably because of its English origins (they were Scotch) or its similarities to the Catholic Church, which in those days was a subject of much prejudice by Protestant denominations. He was expelled from his Senior year at Boston Latin (or possibly Boston English) High School for throwing an ink well at a teacher. In the 1920s and 1930s he sang with the Alpha Male Quartet, Lincoln Male Quartet, and Lafayette Male Quartet. He managed the latter, which included Frank L. Whitcher, John S. Blum, and George A. Brannon.

On 8 Nov 1911 Frank purchased one third interest in land and buildings on Orchard Avenue in Newton, Mass. (Middlesex Co. South, Mass. Deeds 3646:287) On 15 Dec 1911 he purchased land and buildings on Alban Road, lot 389, in the part of Newton called Waban (Deeds, 3656:318).

On 9 May 1913 he was in Philadelphia, Penn. when he discharged a mortgage originally belonging to his sister Mary Jane. (Middlesex Co. South, Mass. Deeds 3970:89)

At the time of his marriage in 1914 he was living in New York City. For the next five years or so they lived with his mother in Medford, Mass.

By 1920 they were at 353 Main Street in Woburn, Mass. According to their daughter they had to leave Woburn because her brother Frank had asthma and they were advised to move out of the city to help him. They moved to 195 Mountain View Road in East Weymouth, Mass. where they stayed until about December 1925.

From then until about 1927 they were in East Braintree, Mass. They moved to Sagamore Street in Dorchester, Mass. for a very short time in 1928, then to 20 Tappan Street in Everett, Mass. They also lived on Baldwin Place in Everett.

From Jun 1928 through Oct 1929 they lived at 6 Prospect Street in the Atlantic section of North Quincy, Mass. After that they moved to 13 Franklin Street in Woburn, Mass. for another year or so. In 1930 they settled down at 627 R Main Street in Woburn, Mass. where Frank lived until he died. From about 1947 until her death in 1963 Beatrice lived with her son Frank at 20 Bryant Street in Everett, Mass. (Information taken from city directories and their daughter Blanche Russell.)

In the 1900 census Frank was living with his parents in Boston and listed as Francis L., with his occupation as errand boy.

In the 1902-3 city directories of Boston he was listed as "Francis" and his occupation was given as shipper. In 1905-6 he was a stenographer at the YMCA in Boston. In the 1907 Medford city directory he was listed as a student, and in 1909 and 1912 as a stenographer. In 1908-10 he was a clerk at 141 Milk Street room 1112. The 1911 and 1912 Boston city directories list him (as Francis) working with G. Robert Wheeler as "Craigie & Wheeler, stenographers" in Boston. Some of his work involved that of a court stenographer who took down testimony word for word in shorthand, according to his daughter. According to his son, before his marriage in 1914 he worked for a detective agency in New York City. In 1916-17 he was listed in the Boston city directories as Frank and his occupation was given as clerk, pier 42, H T D Chsn, which probably stands for the Hoosac Tunnel dock and elevator wharves in Charlestown.

When his children were born in 1916 and 1918 Frank gave his occupation as stenographer. Frank spent the last 30 years or so of his life working for the Texas Company, later called Texaco, as a bookkeeper, clerk, agent or as a cashier. In 1928 he was offered a promotion as Agent at the Stamford, Conn. plant but his children were attending a piano school at the time and he didn't want to take them out of it. He accepted a similar job at the Woburn plant instead, but it was not as good. Later he worked at the Chelsea, Mass. bulk plant.

Religion: He and his brothers attended the Baptist Tremont Temple in Boston because it was one of the largest churches in New England and a popular church with young people at the time. He later got his name on one of its theater seats (the Temple used to be a theater) by giving a donation to the church. His son was christened at Trinity Episcopal Church in Boston and his daughter at the Grace Episcopal Church in Everett. Both were later baptized together about 1934 in the First Baptist Church in Woburn. His daughter Blanche relates, "I don't ever remember my father going to church with us. He always had a job singing at some out-of-town church that could afford a paid soloist. He sang in Newton for a long time and in Swampscott."

His obituary in the Woburn Daily Times (25 Sept. 1945, p.6) says he was a member of the Sagamore Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Medford. He was also a Shriner.4

According to her daughter, Beatrice was Jordan Marsh's first telephone operator. She worked there at the same time as Frank's father and sister Mary Jane. After she left Jordan's she went to work for the Eastern Steamship Co., also as a telephone operator. One day Frank called on a business call and when he said his name was Craigie, Beatrice asked about his father and sister. That's how their relationship began. While working at Eastern Steamship Beatrice made many trips to New York City on the boat with other women who worked there, free of charge. Frank was working in New York at the time and they ended up getting married there. They kept the marriage secret for a while but Frank was impatient so he quit his job and returned home to live with his widowed mother in Medford. They were living there when both of their children were born.3

As a child living with his parents Frank moved around a lot, living in Medford, Woburn, East Weymouth, East Braintree, Everett, the Atlantic section of North Quincy, and finally Woburn again until World War II. As a child he attended the Faelton Pianoforte school in Boston with his sister Blanche. (For more about this schooling see the entry under Blanche). He graduated from Woburn High School in 1935. At some point later on he attended night school at Northeastern University in Boston for 2 1/2 years.

In 1941 he was President of the Boston Motorcycle Club, and his brother-in-law John Russell was the Road Captain. In the fall of that year both of them rode their motorcycles to Albuquerque, New Mexico before going separate ways. John returned to Massachusetts while Frank continued his journey by going south to Mexico before returning through Texas on his way home. It was Frank's second trip to the south and southwest in four years, and he covered around 5000 miles by motorcycle during this period in his life. He made this 1941 trip all in a two-week vacation from his job with the Hertz auto rental company where he worked as a motorcycle rider riding 35 miles a day making bank deposits from all of their locations around Boston. His motorcycle had license plate number 2 in Massachusetts. Number 1 belonged to a man named David Watt who was from Waltham and got that plate in 1914 when Massachusetts first starting issuing plates for motorcycles. Frank met him in 1938 when David was 79 years old and riding a 1921 Indian Prince motorcycle.

Frank served in the Pacific theatre during World War II as a compressor operator in the U.S. Army Engineers. He enlisted on 8 March 1942, first serving for a little more than two years in this country while being schooled in heavy equipment operations, specializing in the "Le Roi" 105 Air Compressor mounted on a GMC 2 1/2 ton 6x6 closed cab truck of 1940 vintage. After that he saw overseas service with the 77th Infantry, 132nd Combat Engineer Batallion, for a year and seven months in Guam, Leyte, the Philippines, Ie Shima, Okinawa and Japan. He was at the battles of the Bismarck Archipelago, Western Pacific, Southern Philippines, and the Ryukus. The famous journalist Ernie Pyle was with Frank's division in the Pacific when he was killed at Ie Shima. Frank was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, American Theater Campaign Ribbon, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star. His father died shortly after Japan surrendered and his mother contacted the Red Cross. Frank was told to get home from Japan the best way he could. That meant bumming rides on planes, ships and trains. He went through Hiroshima along the way. He attained the rank of Technician Fifth Grade and left the Army on 4 Dec 1945.

He lived with his mother at 627 R Main Street in Woburn until his marriage. Frank gave his occupation as "laborer" at the time. Ollie was an inspector in a shoe factory living at 257 Cambridge Street in Cambridge, Mass. Ollie worked at a variety of jobs, ending with a job in the mail department of John Hancock insurance in Boston for three years before their first child was born. Aside from babysitting jobs, she never worked outside the home again.

On 8 July 1947 Frank and Ollie bought a home at 20 Bryant Street in Everett, Mass (Middlesex Co. South, Mass. Deeds, 7152:55) where they lived for 20 years before moving to 93 Salem Street in Reading, Mass. From about 1945 to 1958 Frank worked as a Ford Motor Company utility repairman, then for the Polaroid Corp. in research and development until his retirement in September of 1973.

Frank and Ollie moved to 15 Foley Drive in North Reading about 1986, and lived there the rest of their lives.

Frank was a Baptist and had been a member of the Glendale Baptist Church in Everett, the First Baptist Church of Malden, and the First Baptist Church of Reading. Ollie was a member of the Catholic Church in Malden before her marriage. While at the Glendale Baptist Church Frank was a the church treasurer for the last two years before joining the First Baptist Church in Malden. While there, he was a deacon for three years, and later, in Reading, he was again a deacon for over fifteen years, church treasurer for two years, and a chairman of the trustees for a time. At all three churches he taught Sunday School.

He was a member of the Good Samaritan Lodge of Masons in Reading, where he rose to the rank of Senior Warden. He would have become Master of the Lodge but his age was against him and he declined the office. He also served as a Boy Scoutmaster for ten years in Everett and Reading.
His obituary appeared in the 1 September 2007 the Boston Globe and read as follows:

Birth*Blanche Beatrice Craigie was born on 17 February 1918 at New England Hospital in Boston, Suffolk County, MassachusettsG. At the time of her birth her parents were living at 9 Sumner Ave. in Medford, Mass.1
Marriage*She married John Judge Russell, son of Peter Silver Russell and Mary Amelia Judge, on 19 August 1939 in Kittery, York County, MaineG
Death*Blanche died of a heart attack on 12 December 2002 at home 135 Spectacle Pond Road in Littleton, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG. She had been suffering from diverticulitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and breast cancer for a number of years before she died. Her remains were cremated at Linwood Crematory in Haverhill, Mass. on December 16th.2
Blanche moved around quite a bit as a child. During her childhood years her family lived in Medford, Woburn, East Weymouth, East Braintree, Dorchester, Everett, the Atlantic section of North Quincy, and finally in Woburn again. She started school at the Pratt School in Weymouth, and changed in December 1925 to the Thomas A. Watson School in East Braintree.

From 1925 to 1932 she attended the Faelton Pianoforte School at 30 Huntington Avenue in Boston with her brother Frank. This piano school was started by two German brothers Carl and Reinhold Faelton. Blanche remembers that "Carl was an old man and Reinhold was already dead when we started there. I was the sweetheart of the school when we had a recital because I was only seven when I started and small for my age. They had to put a foot stool at my feet when I sat at the piano and Carl kissed me on the cheek after my first recital... We had many years of lessons but not much skill. My brother had a good touch and could memorize anything but he had terrible trouble reading music. I could read music but had a terrible time memorizing anything. My hands were, and still are, so small I can barely reach an octave. We used to play duets and I think we sounded pretty good together." (Letter, 2/14/94)

She attended public schools in Dorchester and Everett for one year before changing to the Quincy Grammar School during 1928-29. The family moved to Woburn in October 1929 and she graduated from Woburn High School in 1935.

After high school she attended comptometer school. A comptometer was a popular type of calculating machine of the time. Because of the Depression she didn't get a steady job for a while. The first job she had was as a cashier at the Medford Cafe, a 24-hour restaurant. In a letter from February 1, 1994 she writes: "I worked the 5 PM to 1 AM shift. Actually, I really liked the job because I met so many "people" (guys). One of the most memorable days of my life was the day of the 1938 hurricane which started right after I arrived at work. I was standing in front of a plate glass window all evening watching other windows blowing out and things being blown down the street and water from the Mystic River blowing straight up in the air and over Main St. in Medford Square. After that I worked at New England Dressed Meat and Wool (division of Swift & Co.) until I got married. Then believe it or not I had to quit. There were rules in many companies in those days that said married women couldn't work." She used her comptometer skills in the billing department there.

Blanche was a motorcycle enthusiast and in 1939 was chosen "Miss Motorcycle" at the annual gypsy tour in Laconia, N.H. That's how she met her husband, who was also a motorcyclist.

During her married years, 1939-1948 she didn't work outside the home. They lived on Warren Avenue in Woburn, Mass., on the third floor in two rooms for a few months after their wedding until moving to Intervale Road in Salem, Mass. where they stayed until 1942. Jack worked in the cotton mills there as a loom fixer. In early 1942 he was offered a better job as a draftsman with the Draper Corp. in Hopedale, Mass. This company manufactured looms and according to Blanche "owned the whole town" so they lived in one of the corporation houses at 13 Bancroft Drive. Their daughter Marsha was born while they were living in Hopedale. Jack didn't do too well at his job there so the same person who recommended him for that job got him a job in Maine at Bates Manufacturing in Lewiston. They left Boston on November 29, 1942, the day after the Cocoanut Grove fire, and went to live at 16 White Street in Lewiston, Maine. They moved to Sylvan Avenue in Lewiston in 1943.

They rented both houses in Lewiston but in 1944 they bought a house on Court St. across the Androscoggin River in Auburn, Maine. After their divorce in April of 1948 they sold the house but Blanche got a year's free rent in a small upstairs apartment out of the deal. When that ran out she moved to 123 Spring Street in Auburn. In 1954 she moved a short distance to 20 Cushman Place.

After the divorce she got a job at Bates Mfg. Co. in Lewiston (where her ex-husband worked) for twelve years. She started in the mill working on machines that wound bobbins. The company made sheets and bedspreads. Later she worked for the plant engineer and the maintenance crews, then for a couple of years in the stock room and finally in payroll. It was at this latter position that she says she "learned about slave labor." One day she just up and quit her job. This was in 1960, and just after her daughter Marsha graduated from high school.

In September of 1960 Blanche moved back to Massachusetts and lived at 18 Bryant Street in Everett, next door to her brother Frank, for about four years. Her daughter Marsha was already there, having left right after graduation to take a job with the Polaroid Corp. Her other daughter Barbara was living with her father at this time. She had lived with both her mother and her father at various times since the divorce. She joined them in Everett a year or so later.

Marsha went to Boston University for a year and Blanche also went to work for the Polaroid Corporation. Her brother Frank got her the job there and for a time both of her daughters worked there too. She stayed with them for twenty years, ending up as an executive secretary for a Director in the Engineering Division. She retired in July of 1980.

In 1964 Blanche bought a home at 135 Spectacle Pond Road in Littleton, Mass. where she lived for the remainder of her life with her daughter Marsha.3
Her obituary appeared in the an unknown date Boston Globe and read as follows:

Blanche Russell of Littleton, Dec. 12. Mother of Marsha B. Russell of Littleton, and Barbara J. Russell of Malden. Sister of Frank L. Craigie, Jr, of N. Reading. Grandmother of James B. Donahue, Justine M. and her husband Glenn Sullivan, Jeffrey A. and his wife Tina Donahue, Thomas and his wife Julie Donahue and Tracy and her husband Michael Merritt. Great grandmother of Janelle Donnarumma, Amanda L. Gonsalves, Shawn Donahue and Tyler Sullivan. Aunt of Wayne Craigie and his wife Lynn of Oklahoma City and Alice and her husband Frank of N. Reading.
