Edmund grew up in North Reading and Melrose. The 1929 Melrose city directory lists him as a "manager', and in 1931-33 he worked with his father in real estate and insurance in Melrose. Before they met his future wife Audrey Anderson she was engaged to another man and pregnant with his child. Before this child was born, in 1934, the man died of tuberculosis. This child -- Norma -- was born an Anderson but took the name Craigie when her mother got married. At the time of their marriage in May 1938 Edmund and Audrey were both working for the National Radio Co. in Malden, Mass. and living with their parents. They eloped to get married and stated on the marriage certificate that they were both living in Franklin, N.H. Their daughter Norma remembers that the family had friends who owned a camp in Franklin, which is possibly where this erroneous information came from. Seven months after the wedding, on 12 Dec 1938, Edmund filed for divorce against Audrey, but it never went through. Evidently they resolved their problems. The divorce papers stated that they had lived at 1117 Main Street in Melrose and lastly at 85 Myrtle Street in Melrose. When the 1940 census was taken on 15 Apr William and Audrey were renting at 426 Salem Street in Malden. For some reason their daughter Norma wasn't recorded with them. William worked as a "Route salesman" in a dairy business. It stated that he had graduated from high school, but Audrey had only completed 8th grade. She worked as a "salesgirl" in a department store. Their marital difficulties continued to plague them, as on 28 Dec 1940 Edmund filed for divorce once more, and again it was never finalized. The papers state that they had lived at 7 Sapphire Road in Saugus, 426 Salem Street in Malden, and at 23 Meridian Street in Melrose. At the time of the filing Audrey's address was unknown to Edmund. There is some confusion here over where they lived during this period. The divorce papers give addresses that don't entirely agree with other sources. An Essex County deed5 has them purchasing property at Sapphire Road in Saugus in May 1943, and in another deed6 they sold it in Nov 1945. Edmund himself said in an interview in 1977 that from about 1938 until the Spring of 1943 they lived at 45 Wilbur Street in Malden. He claimed to have moved to the Sapphire Road address after that, and when their daughter Audrey was born in Aug 1944 they were indeed living there, according to her birth certificate. They were still residing in Saugus on 28 Apr 1945 when they purchased their home at 23 Meridian Street in Melrose. They sold it 4 Nov 1950, just after they were separated. During this time period Edmund worked for the Boston Combining Company making shoe linings. He was at various times a leather worker or a machine operator. On 11 Jul 1948 Audrey gave birth to a daughter prematurely. The baby, which they named Barbara Ann Craigie, didn't survive the day and was buried in Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose the next day.7,8 Marital problems plagued them until the end, which came about on 13 Nov 1948 or 1950, depending on which source you believe. One record dated 21 Nov 19509 stated that Audrey left him on the 13th just past, yet their final divorce decree dated 27 Feb 1961 gave the year as 1948. The earlier record of 1950 is probably the correct one. They were together in the 1950 census taken on April 10, living at 23 Meridian Street in Melrose. Edmund worked as a machine operator in a shoe factory and Audrey worked in a radio factory. In Oct 1951 Audrey gave birth to her son Donald Craigie, although the father was not Edmund. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., so Audrey was apparently living in that area at that time. The only other address we have for her at present is at 38 Blanche Street in Cambridge, Mass. in Feb 1961 when the divorce was finalized. At the time of her death she had been working for the Electronics Corporation of America.10 In an interview on 25 Aug 1977 Edmund attempted to reconstruct the history of his many jobs and residences. He said the family called him the "East Coast Runner" because of the frequency of his moves. After Melrose, he said, he moved to Kennebunk, Maine for one or 1 1/2 years where he began a long series of jobs in the restaurant and motel industry, taking his first job at Howard Johnson's. He left in the late summer for Pinehurst, North Carolina where he stayed for only one season, working at the Carolina Hotel. Next stop was Sea Island, Georgia where he worked at the Cloister Hotel and remained for 2 years. Edmund recalls that he lived in Sea Island when Truman was President, which was 1945-1953, so presumably this was during the later years of the Presidency. His next three years were spent in Plainville, Connecticut where he worked as a cook again at a Howard Johnson's. From there it was back down south to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for 8 months to a year where he cooked at the Governor's Club Hotel. After nine or ten months on 47th Street in New York City and a year in Waterbury, Conn. he moved to New Haven, Conn. for 3 years. The 1959 New Haven directory lists him at 108 Bradley Street. He is not listed in the 1960 directory, and the 1961-62 directories haven't been checked. During all this time he worked as a cook at the Waldorf Hotel in New York City. He bounced around a bit after that. When his final divorce papers came through in February 1961 his address was 19 Nye Road in Falmouth, Mass. At some point it was back to 47th Street in NYC for a year or less where he worked at St. Clair's Restaurant, then New Haven again where he lived with friends after the last of his children left the nest. The 1963 New Haven directory lists him as living at 28 Bradley Avenue in West Haven. He was in New Haven this time for two or three years, working at the College Spa Restaurant, before going back to Ft. Lauderdale for another two or three years, again living with friends. In Ft. Lauderdale he worked at the Sheraton. He moved back to New Haven once again to live with his daughter Audrey for six or seven months, then to Atlanta, Georgia where he lived with his son William. In Atlanta he worked for a time at the Pewter Mug Restaurant. He spent his last years alternating his residence between his children in Connecticut and Georgia. At the time of the interview in 1977, at the age of 66, he was a part-time clerk in a dry cleaning business in Georgia.
His obituary appeared in the 23 June 1978 Atlanta Constitution and read as follows: CRAIGIE. Friends and relatives of Mr. William E. She attended schools through the 7th grade in Malden, Saugus and Melrose. Norma was living with her parents at 23 Meridian Street in Melrose when she gave birth to her son Edward. When she married her son's father nearly two years later she was still living with her parents and her husband was living with his parents at 121 Beech Avenue in Melrose. After the wedding they lived with his parents for seven years until they separated in November of 1957. Edward worked as an auto mechanic in Somerville, Everett, Wakefield, Melrose, and perhaps other places. He and Norma were officially divorced in 1965. (Mass. VR Divorce Index). The last 20 years or so of his life he worked as a mechanic for the city of Melrose. He continued to live at the Beech Avenue address. After the separation Norma lived at 951 Western Avenue in Lynn, Mass. for about nine months. In the summer of 1958 she moved to Ferry Street in Everett, Mass. for a year before going to 769 Main Street in Malden. She was still living there in Dec. 1966 when she married John Goggin. Donald was born about a year after his mother's divorce, and, according to his sister Norma, his natural father was another man whose name was Edward (or possibly Edmund) Steph. He took the name of Craigie anyway. His natural father Edward supposedly died in Leavittown, N.Y. when Donald was two years old. Donald lived with his mother until she died in April 1965. They were at 127 Cherry St. in Cambridge, Mass. at the time. Afterwards, at age 13, he moved in with his sister Norma Sherman who was appointed his guardian on 25 June 1965.4 He continued to live with her in Malden and Wakefield until he was about 18 years old. When he married Dianna Wendell on Christmas Day in 1969 he was still living with Norma. He was working in supply and distribution at the time. Dianna was a unit aide and her residence was 1785 Manila in Memphis, Tennessee. Donald continued to live and work, as a forklift mechanic or cabinet maker, in the Boston area until his untimely death from an overdose of chloral hydrate at the age of 24. He was living at 187 Center St. in Jamaica Plain at the time of his death. After his death his wife Dianna couldn't be located by his family and it was presumed that she returned to her home state of Tennessee. They had no children. |

Burial* | He was buried on 15 January 1992 in Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose.5 |
Roland grew up in Melrose and North Reading, Mass. After his marriage he and Leona were living at 18 Holbrook Court in Melrose when their first child Barbara was born. He was a leather worker at the time. In Aug 1934 when his mother died her obituary stated that he was "of Greenwood", which is a section of Melrose. According to Blanche Russell he may have lived in Somerville for a while around 1935. In August of that year, when their daughter Beulah was born, they were living at 82 Granville Avenue in Malden, Mass. Roland gave his occupation as "leather iron" on the birth certificate. Roland and Leona were divorced in 1937. On their divorce papers it states that they had lived in Melrose, Wakefield, Malden and Somerville. At the time of the divorce Leona was living in Wakefield and Roland in Somerville. Their two daughters were boarded out in Georgetown, Mass. until after Leona married again, about 1939, John E. Gaines. He was born in Schenectady, NY on 25 Jun 1893, according to the age at death given on his death certificate. He was the son of John Gaines and Edna Ellis. Jack and Leona got custody of her two daughters and when the 1940 census was taken they were living with the girls at 80 Appleton Street in Boston. He was a chef and she was a waitress in a restaurant. Later they moved to North Main Street in Assonet, Mass. She worked briefly in a sewing shop as a seamstress before they opened up their own restaurant in town. That proved to be unsuccessful however and after a couple years in Assonet they moved to Tremont (?) Street in Roxbury or West Roxbury, Mass. Around 1956 they moved to her family's old home at 26 Shady Avenue in Wakefield, Mass. While in the Boston area Jack worked as a doorman at a fancy hotel in Boston and Leona worked as a hostess at a restaurant in Boston. They had no children together. Jack died of heart disease on 27 Jul 1957 at home in Wakefield and was buried July 29th in Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett.6 When the 1940 census was taken Roland was an inmate in the Massachusetts State Prison in Boston. It said he had a 7th grade education. On 20 Oct 1941 when Roland filled out his World War II draft form he was living with his father at 123 First Street in Melrose and working for the Boston Combining Co. in Roxbury. He was described as being 5' 9 1/2" tall weighing 135 and having blue eyes, brown hair and a light complexion. He enlisted in the military on 1 Apr 1943, and his enlistment records state that he had a grammar school education and was a semiskilled laborer in the production of rubber goods. Roland served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific theatre of World War II before coming home and getting married again. When he married Lois in 1946 he was a machinist and she was a clerk and they were both from Melrose. On 29 Aug 1947 they bought a home at 18 Rockland Street in Melrose, and they lived there for the remainder of their lives. He gave his occupation as "machine operator" in 1947 and on his death certificate it said he was a "machine operator, textile manufacturing". Lois worked as a typist for the Standard Accident Insurance Co. in Boston in 1961-62, according to the Boston city directory. In 1965 it says that she was a typist for the Reliance Insurance Co in Boston. Her death certificate said she was a "Clerk, Insurance Co." |

Yvonne grew up in Malden, Georgetown, Assonet, Roxbury (or W. Roxbury) and Wakefield, Mass. She did not attend public school after attending junior high school in Jamaica Plain, Mass. After her mother's death in August 1958 she moved to North Kingstown, RI to live with her sister Barbara Mae Kirkwood until she was married a couple years later. Yvonne and Lloyd moved to his home town of East Greenwich, RI and lived on Palmer(tine?) St. for about a year, then on King St. where they lived when their eldest son was born in Sept. 1961. After a year and a half on King St. they moved to South Main St., still in East Greenwich. While she was pregnant with their daughter, Yvonne separated from Lloyd for a few months and moved to Providence St. in West Warwick, RI. Before Debbie was born Lloyd moved back in. Lloyd worked as an electrician with his father but never was licensed so eventually supported himself through bartending, and some electrical work on the side. From West Warwick they moved to Fall River, Mass. where they lived until separated in 1970. They never divorced. Lloyd moved back to East Greenwich and in December 1994 was living on Duke St., still working as a bartender. Yvonne received her G.E.D. from Bristol Community College (BCC) in Fall River in 1970 and went to work as a bookkeeper. She continued in that occupation for nearly twenty years. Between 1983 and 1986 she attended BCC again and received an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts. Her daughter Debbie attended BCC at the same time. In July 1989 she took a three month job working at a home for pregnant women in Slatersville, RI. She was unable to find a job in the bookkeeping field at the time so continued in the home nursing area. In October 1989 she went to work as a live-in aide for an elderly woman in Westport, Mass., staying there for 2 years and 7 months. While there, in 1992, she took a one month course in nursing assistance. For three months in early 1993 she worked in Middleton, RI at the Grand Islander Nursing Home. In mid-1993 she took a job as a certified nursing assistant in the Catholic Memorial Nursing Home in Fall River, and she was at work there the night she died. In August of 1994 she moved to 184 McCloskey St. in Fall River, Mass., where she resided with her sons Lloyd and Kevin until her death. Lloyd retired around the age of 65 and as of Jan 2011 was living in East Greenwich, RI. |

Death* | Beulah died of pneumonia on 5 April 2002 at home, 59 Green St. in Malden, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG. She was cremated at Harmony Grove Crematory in Salem, Mass. on April 8th.4 |
Beulah grew up in North Reading, Billerica and Melrose, Mass. She was living with her parents in Melrose when she married in 1936, and by June of the following year when they had their first child they lived at 24 Vine St. in Melrose. By May 1939 when their son William was born they had moved to 69 Myrtle St. in Melrose. When the 1940 census was taken in April they Beulah and her two oldest children were living with her father at 123 First Street in Melrose, but Clarence Sr. wasn't enumerated with the family. He appears to be living in the household of Harold and Marjory Smith, as Harold's step-son. His mother's name was Marjory so this is probably a second husband for her. They lived at 16 Lynde Street in Melrose and Clarence worked as a gate tender for the steam railroad. When their third son Norman was born in December 1940 they living with Beulah's parents. When daughter Mary Ann was born in March 1944 they were at 84 Henry St. in Malden, Mass. Clarence's residence was given as "unknown" on the birth certificate but he probably still resided there. In November 1945 when Barbara was born they were at 82 Everett St. in Everett, Mass. In the 1941, 1942, and 1947-48 Melrose city directories she was living with her father at 123 First St. In the latter her occupation was given as "Tlress", probably meaning "tailoress". Clarence left home in June of 1948 and they were divorced in 1952. On their divorce papers it stated that they had lived together in Malden, Melrose, Everett, and lastly, Melrose. The 1950 Boston city directory lists Beulah at 89 Albion St. in Boston. The 1952 directory lists her at 604 Massachusetts Ave. in Boston. In August of 1953 when her daughter Camilla (Leah) was born she was living at 3 Wentworth Place in Boston. When son Theodore was born in November 1954 she was at 216 Northampton St. in Boston. She married Theodore in March 1955 and their first residence after the marriage was 81 Albion St. in Boston. (Suffolk Co., Mass. Divorce File 61700) By October 1956 when their daughter Sandra was born they were at 162 Harold St. in Roxbury, Mass. Between at least August 1958 when their twins were born and died and March 1963 when their last child was born Beulah lived at 208 Highland St. in Roxbury, Mass., The 1964 Boston city directory lists them at 164 Harold St. in Roxbury. The 1965 through 1968 Boston directories list them at 23 Lambert Ave. in Roxbury. The 1969 through 1971 directories list them at 49 Westmore Rd. in Mattapan, Mass. Beulah's son Norman Sawyer also lived here with his family at this time. The 1973 through 1975 directories list them at 13 Lambert Street in Roxbury, which is a different place than Lambert Ave. above. Theodore was living at 83 Clarkson St. in Dorchester when he died. The informant on his death certificate was Theodore's mother Grace Camillo of 23 Lambert Ave. in Roxbury. The 1976 through 1981 Boston directories list Beulah at 23 Lambert Ave. in Roxbury, again. When her daugher Patricia was murdered in September 1983, Beulah was living at 27 Rogers St. in Lynn, Mass. In 1988 she was at 21 Rogers Ave. in Lynn, the same address where her son Joseph Teixeira was living in 1985. From about 1993 to about April 1994 she was living at 112 Prescott Ave., Apt. 15 in Chelsea, Mass with her daughter Mary Ann. In August 1996 she was living at 66 Devir St. #403, Malden, Mass., 02148. At some point they may have lived at 907 Main St. in Pawtucket, R.I. Clarence's occupations: Dec 1936: R.R. Emp. June 1937: B&M station tender May 1939: Crossing Tender Dec 1940: W.P.A. Nov 1945: Field representative 1947-48 Melrose directory has Clarence living apart from Beulah at 16 Lynde St. in Melrose as a hotel manager. Until a heart attack forced his retirement in April 1970 he was working at MacLean Hospital in Belmont, Mass. Theodore's occupations: 1956-1964: auto mechanic, when not in prison. 1965-66: Boston city directories read: "mach Arsenal (W'town)", meaning, presumably, that he was a machinist at the Watertown Arsenal, which manufactured war materials. 1973-75: Boston city dir. says "laborer". Feb 1975: his death certificate says he was an auto mechanic. In August 1996 Beulah was living at 66 Devir St. Apt. 403 in Malden. When she died she was living with her daughter Mary Sawyer at 59 Green St. Apt. 213 in Malden. Beulah and Theodore had twins born prematurely on 16 August 1958. One was born dead and the other, a boy they named Michael, died 45 minutes after birth. They were buried in Fairview Cemetery in Boston.5,6

In January 1995 Clarence was living with his wife Phyllis and stepdaughter Cheryl Smith at 63 Pine St. in Stoneham, Mass., 02180 (617-279-9177). He was still living in Stoneham when his mother died in 2002. He has no children of his own. Clarence grew up in the Melrose and Malden, Mass. area. After his parents divorced following World War II he and his younger brother Bill went to live with his father's mother Marjorie Sawyer in Melrose. He spent time in the Army, stationed for a year and two months in South Korea in 1961-62. He sailed home from Korea during the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis of November 1962, traveling the Sea of Japan at a time when war with the Soviet Union could have broken out all around him. Clarence has lived in a number of places in Massachusetts, including Medford, Worcester, Northampton, Springfield and Chicopee, and worked a wide variety of jobs before settling into employment with the State of Massachusetts around 1974. That is when he took a job working for the Division of Employment Security, working out of Malden. At the time of their marriage in 1981 Clarence was a "Sr. Interviewer" living at 68 Summer St. in Malden, Mass. and Phyllis was a "Sr. Clerk Typist" living at 33 Morgan Ave. in Medford, Mass. Not long afterwards Massachusetts' Proposition 2 1/2 tax-cut him out of a job. With the help of his new wife, who also worked for the State, at the Board of Cosmetology, he got a new job for the State working in the Revenue Department, where he is currently (Jan. 1995) still employed. Phyllis worked for the Board of Cosmetology for 13 1/2 years until her recent retirement.
His obituary read as follows: Clarence H. "Clancy" Sawyer, a resident of Stoneham, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, October 31, 2015, at age 78. Clarence Sawyer was born in Melrose, one of five children of the late Clarence H. Sawyer and Beulah (Craigie) Sawyer. He was raised in Melrose, graduated from Melrose High School and served in the US Army honorably while stationed in Korea. Clarence, known to many as "Clancy" worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Senior Clerk in the Department of Revenue Abatement Bureau. With a wide skill set and years of experience, he was considered the "jack of all trades" in the office by his colleagues. Clancy was a simple, kind, and humble man. In 1999, he retired to enjoy day trips with the Wakefield and Stoneham Senior Centers. In his free time, he enjoyed reading, history, and playing cards. Clancy was the beloved husband of the late Phyllis L. (Beck) Sawyer. Step-father of Cheryl L. Smith of Medford. Dear friend and devoted companion of Doris P. Clow of Stoneham and her daughter, Barbara Allaire and her husband Ronald of RI. Cherished brother of William S. Sawyer and his wife Margaret of Exeter, NH, Norman T. Sawyer of VA, Mary A. Harold's full name comes from the maiden names of his two grandmothers. He grew up in North Reading, Billerica and Melrose, Mass., graduating from Melrose High School in 1939. Edie graduated from the same place two years later. Between his graduation from High School and World War II he worked as a molder in the Amazeen Foundry in Wakefield, Mass. The 1940 census called him a laborer in a "combining factory." Harold served in the Navy during the war. He attended boot camp in Rhode Island, then was trained in radar and sonar at training schools in Norfolk, Virginia, Detroit, and the Fisher's Island Naval Training Station in New York. The only time he spent out of the country during the war was six months he spent on a ship in the North Atlantic. During that time his ship visited Edinburgh, Scotland and he was able to visit with relatives there. After that one six month period he went back to naval schools for more training in sonar at Fisher's Island again, and at the Treasure Island Naval Station in San Francisco. He was on a brief leave when he married Edie in November 1943. During the war Edie painted radium on dials for a defense contractor for a couple of years. This was before the dangers of working with radioactive materials was well known, but fortunately she suffered no obvious after effects. At the time of her marriage she was a commercial artist living at 20 Sargent Street in Melrose. After the war Harold and Edie purchased a home, on 5 Oct 1946, at 135 Summer Street in Stoneham, Mass. [Middlesex Co. South, Mass. Deeds, 7004:475] Harold went to work for the Lantz and Tilton cabinet shop in Stoneham as an apprentice under the GI Bill. They were living there when the 1950 census was taken, and Edie's mother was living with them. Edie worked for a time as an enameler on jewelry at the Herman Co. in Melrose until their first child was born, at which point she stayed home for several years to raise her children. In the summer of 1953 they bought a house in Lochmere (Belmont), NH. Harold took a job at the Laconia State School, an institution for the mentally ill, as a manual training teacher in the industrial arts. He worked there for 32 years, until his retirement in 1984, ending up as the supervisor of vocational training for the School. Edie also worked there for a number of years after her children were grown. While she was home with the kids she earned money on the side taking in children for home day care, and also baked and decorated elaborate cakes for weddings and other events. Her family birthday celebrations always had wonderful cakes. They lived at their home in Lochmere for 2-3 years, then rented for a few years a house on the grounds of the Laconia State School reserved for staff. Around 1961 they bought their home at 44 Dartmouth Street in Laconia. After Harold's death Edie remained there for a few more years until March of 2008 when she moved to the Saint Francis Home, 406 Court Street #207 in Laconia, an assisted lliving facility.
