Marriage* | She married second John Gilbert Thomas, son of Francis W. Thomas and Louise Agro, on 24 July 1965 at the Episcopal Church in North Branford, New Haven County, ConnecticutG. |
Death* | Audrey Mae Craigie died on 3 June 2008 at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, Middlesex County, ConnecticutG.2 |
| Audrey grew up in several places as her father traveled up and down the east coast. She eventually took root in the New Haven, Conn., area, where she attended Hillhouse High School until dropping out in December 1961 to have a baby. She was living on State St. in New Haven at the time, but after her wedding she moved in with Bob's parents on Ramsdell St. in Westville, Conn. They moved to Kensington St. in New Haven for 9 months in 1963 until their marriage ended. At that time her husband took their two children for a couple months while Audrey traveled to Philadelphia with her next husband John Thomas. Audrey and John returned home to live on Sea Hill Rd. in North Branford, Conn. for seven months and the children were once again living with her. Their next move was to buy a home at 58 Clear Lake Manor Rd. in North Branford. They remained there only a couple of years, until about 1970 when they bought the home in Durham, Conn.
Aside from some part time jobs doing waitressing when her children were young, Audrey didn't work outside the home. After her second husband John died in 1983 she got her G.E.D. and went to school for nursing at Vinal Regional Vocational Technical School in Middletown, Conn. She graduated in 1987 as a licensed practical nurse and went to work at the Masonic Home and Hospital in Wallingford, Conn. She also worked as coordinator of the nursing assistant program at Vinal Tech where she had gone to school.
Her first husband Bob Messercola graduated from Hillhouse High School in New Haven in 1959 or 60. After their divorce he enlisted in the Marines and was sent to Vietnam. Following his return home he went to police school and got a job as a policeman for Yale University in New Haven. Later he worked for the railroad in New Haven and is currently (1994) working as an inspector for the Connecticut State Dept. of Transportation. He remarried, about 1975, a woman named Denise Laughin. Laughin is her name from a previous marriage and her maiden name is unknown. She has a son from that previous marriage named Robert Thomas Laughin. In 1977 they were living in Madison, Conn. Bob and Denise currently had a child of their own and were living in Hamden, Conn. in 1994.
Her second husband John Thomas graduated from Wilbur Cross High School in New Haven in 1958(?). Before he married Audrey he was in the Army for four years, stationed much of the time in Germany. He worked as a chemist for the Upjohn Corporation in North Haven until his death.
Audrey had lived at 109 Old Farms Rd., Durham, Conn. from at least 1994 until her death. |
| Her obituary appeared in the 5 June 2008 Hartford Courant and read as follows:
THOMAS, Audrey LPN Snurkowski

Mother of Robert J. (Cheryl) Messercola, Jr. of Meriden, Richard W. Messercola of Branford and John Paul Thomas of Durham. Sister of William E. Andrew Craigie
M, b. circa 1703, d. 18 October 1766
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Andrew Craigie was born circa 1703, probably in Orkney, ScotlandG. His approximate date of birth is established from his age at death. There was an Andrew Craigie baptized in Kirkwall, Orkney on 18 May 1699 to George Craigie and Mary Harrold that may be worth investigating. |
Marriage* | He married Elizabeth Gardner, daughter of John Gardner and Priscilla Coffin, in 1737 in Nantucket, Nantucket County, MassachusettsG. |
Death* | Andrew died on 18 October 1766 in Boston, Suffolk County, MassachusettsG. |
| Andrew was a ship captain from the Orkney Islands of Scotland who, according to family tradition, was shipwrecked on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, at some point before his marriage to Elizabeth Gardner, a woman of Nantucket, in 1737.
From the minutes of a Boston Selectmen's meeting of April 22, 1741: "Andrew Craigie and his Wife Elizabeth and Elizabeth Woodbury lately from Charlestown are Admitted Inhabitants, upon Condition that Capt. Alexander Forsyth with him, give Bond to the Town Treasurer to Indemnify the Town from any Charge upon their account for Five Years in the Sum of One Hundred and Fifty Pounds." ("A Report of the Record Commissioners of the City of Boston, containing the Records of Boston Selectmen, 1736 to 1742. Boston: Rockwell & Churchill, 1886, p. 288)
Andrew was a ship captain who sailed for many years between Boston and London. In 1742 his ship was named the "John Galley". Later in life he became a shopkeeper in Boston.
In 1754 Andrew was one of the petitioners before Massachusetts Governor William Shirley for the incorporation of the Boston Marine Society, formerly known as the Fellowship Club, the oldest marine society in the world.
A petition in the Mass. Archives Collection, v.117:54 dated Dec 26, 1755 supposedly mentions his name, although I didn't see it. The petition begins on page 53, is short and difficult to read so I didn't try, and p. 54 doesn't appear to be there. The names are difficult to read too but I didn't see Andrew's name on p. 53. A card in the Archives' catalog said he was on this petition.
In 1764 the Boston Marine Society, meeting at the British Coffee House on "King" St. appointed Captain Craigie warden of the Port of Boston. In January of the following year he headed a committee of four to present a petition to the General Court to "Obtain Liberty to Erect a Light on Nantucket", a project, the Great Point Light, not accomplished for another nineteen years. In November 1764 he became treasurer of the Society and for over a year the accounts are entered and signed by his hand. The last mention of Andrew in the Society's books was in the entry of a meeting on November 4th, 1766, a few weeks after his death, where dues are paid "for Attendance for the Evening and Cap Craigie Funeral."
His obituaries are printed in the Oct. 23, 1766 Massachusetts Gazette and Boston News-Letter and the Oct. 20, 1766 Boston Gazette and County Journal. In them he is called by one "a noted Sea Commander" and in another "a noted Shopkeeper in this Town, and a Gentleman well respected among us - being, An honest Man."
He and his wife were buried in the famous King's Chapel burying place. The stone is now mutilated and weatherscarred and stands near the Winthrop tomb. It is visible from Tremont St. At the top where the familiar death's head would have leered is a great V-shaped gap, in which death is swallowed up in victory. The epitaph, "Dies tenebrarum memento" (Be thou reminded of the day of shadows!) is buried below ground.
Andrew's will, in which he describes himself as a merchant, was written May 28, 1765 and probated October 31, 1766. It provides for the education of his sons Andrew and John and was witnessed by William Baker, Joseph Gardner, and Samuel Quincy. (Mass. Archives, docket no. 13930)
It is not known whether Captain Craigie was an occupant of that pew in King's Chapel reserved for "masters of Vessels". On his wife's side they were Puritans, however the parish records show that the Wardens and Vestry, in 1749, received an important letter "wch came by Cap. Craigie from his Grace the Lord Bishop of London."
Besides his membership in the Marine Society, Andrew was known to have early joined the Fire Society. |
