| When the 1910 census was taken he was living with his mother and siblings in Brooklyn and was employed as an office boy in a paper firm.
The Times Union newspaper of Brooklyn on 15 Jun 1915 (p.8) has a small article titled "Arrest Four at Ball Game." It goes on to say "Richmond Hill - June 15. Four East New York men were arrested by Sergeant Flood for annoying spectators at a baseball game in Dexter Park yesterday. They were: John Lombardi, 32, a saloonkeeper, of 2141 Fulton street; Arthur Teschek, 22, a bartender, of 175 Georgia avenue; Thomas McBride, 26, a decorator, of 227 Vermont street; Harry McBride, 24, of 221 Sheffield avenue.
He served in World War I as a private. When he registered for the draft in June 1917 he was living at 306 Washington Street in Melrose, Mass. next door to his brother Herman. He was working at a box maker in the Converse Rubber factory in Malden, Mass., where his brother also worked. He was described as slender and of medium height with blue eyes and brown hair. An article in the Boston Globe of 23 Jul 1918 (p.10) mentions a story from Melrose that said (in part) "Melrose sent another quota of young men to Camp Devens this forenoon to join the National Army. The men were given a sendoff at the Melrose station by their relatives and friends., and there were addresses by Mayor Adams and members of the selection board." Then it goes on to mention the names of the soldiers, including Arthur Teschek.
In 1920 the census found him living as a lodger in Brooklyn, The street name is illegible. He was working as a blacksmith for the railroad and was single.
The 1933-34 Brooklyn city directory lists Arthur Teschuck, a bus driver living at 2638 Fulton Street. When he died in May 1935 he was living at 2748 Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. His occupation was given as handyman.
We only know the name of his wife and daughter through communication with his niece Gloria (Teschek) Schilter. In a letter from 1977 she says she only remembers seeing their daughter Muriel as an infant and does not know what became of her. Arthur's death certificate said that he was single so if he was ever married the marriage was likely over by the time he died. After he died in 1931 Gloria says never saw or heard from his wife or daughter again, and I have been unable to locate anything about them. I suspect that if he ever did have a wife she remarried and both she and Muriel took another name. On his death certificate the informant was his sister "Elizabeth" Benz and she was said to be his "nearest surviving relative." It should have been "Caroline" Benz unless she was using a nickname I've never seen before, and it also gave the wrong street number for her address unless the 1930 and 1940 census both got it wrong, as they consistently say 226 Logan Street instead of the 268 that Arthur's death certificate gives. Given these two mistakes one wonders what else might be wrong on the record.1,6 |

This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Marriage* | She married James Learmonth, son of Archibald Learmonth and Jane Drummond. |
Birth* | Mary Scott was born (christened) 30 June 1782 in Sanday, Orkney, ScotlandG. (IGI.) |
Death* | Mary died of consumption on 19 August 1859 at Whistlebear in Burness Parish, Sanday, Orkney, ScotlandG. She was buried in the Burness church yard.1 |
| Her husband, a farmer, was apparently still alive when she died.
According to Kenny Learmonth (KLearmonth@compuserve.com) they spent their lives living at Whistlebare, Burness, Sanday and had seven children. The eldest son, John, was on board a whaler, the Dee, which was frozen in over the winter of 1836-37 in the Davis Straits. He, and all but two of the original crew, died of scurvy before the ship broke free of the ice floe, and made it back to Stromness in April 1837. A James Learmonth was on board another ship, Glenville Bay, which was frozen in at the same time. He made it back to Stromness but died in the hospital there. He may or may not be John's younger brother, but it is a distinct possibility since there is no trace of either of them in later life. |
