Death*He died in a plane crash on 11 October 2004 in Madison, New Haven County, ConnecticutG.1,2
His death in a plane crash was covered by several newspapers and websites locally. Some follow:

From the News-Times of Danbury, Conn., October 15, 2004:

Local man dies in plane crash

Scott Hanlon was a "naturally adventurous" person, his grieving sister, Allison Homberg, recalled this week.

The 44-year-old New Milford man - already a scuba diver, karate enthusiast and former U.S. Navy sailor - was so excited when his former wife gave him a birthday gift certificate for an introductory flying lesson that he went to aviation school, took a flying course and got his pilot's license.

"He was so thrilled about getting his license, he continued his studies," Mr. Hanlon's brother, Keith, said this week. "He looked forward to continue his flying."

But that dream ended tragically Monday evening when the small 1978 Piper Warrior Mr. Hanlon was flying crashed into a house just 40 miles away from where he was supposed to land - at Danbury Airport.

His passenger and co-worker at the U.S. Post Office in Brookfield, Katherine Johnson, 49, who lived in Danbury, died with him.

"It's a terrible tragedy," said post office spokesman Carl Walton. "Both were very highly thought of."

Ihab Elbarrawi, the chief instructor at Danbury Flight School, where Mr. Hanlon rented the plane, said Mr. Hanlon took off with Ms. Johnson around 10 a.m. in good weather for the 125-mile trip to Nantucket off Cape Cod, Mass.

The two were returning from Nantucket when Mr. Hanlon radioed a "mayday" to Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks around 5:50 p.m., reporting that the plane's engine had stopped working.

As the single-engine plane lost altitude, it sliced through a row of tree tops and slammed into the back of a home on a short road named Lover's Lane.

Three people in the house, including a child, escaped injury.

Neighbors who rushed to the scene talked to Mr. Hanlon and Ms. Johnson, assuring them rescue workers were on the way. Both occupants were still strapped in their seats.

"I don't think they got a chance to hear us," said one neighbor, Sandra Davis.

"Both of their lives just drifted. Like that," she said, snapping her fingers.

On Tuesday, as the National Transportation Safety Board opened its investigation into the crash, officials from the Federal Aviation Authority took logbooks and other paperwork relating to the plane from Danbury Flight School.

"This has affected everyone," Mr. Elbarrawi said.

"Mr. Hanlon was checked out by one of our instructors last June and had flown that type of plane before," he noted.

Mr. Elbarrawi said Mr. Hanlon's plane was fitted with a new $20,000 engine only last May.

Mr. Hanlon, who was born in the Bronx, N.Y., served in the Navy for two years after graduating from Brewster High School in 1978. He moved to New Milford with his wife and family in 1990 where he owned and operated Green Cuts Landscaping.

The pilot, who worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 20 years, worked at the Brookfield post office as a maintenance worker since 1995.

"He was a good guy and very active," said Mr. Hanlon's former wife, Robin, who lives in New Milford. "He loved us and his grandchildren."

The Hanlons were divorced nearly two years ago. One son, Preston, 21, lives in New Milford. Their daughter, Melissa, 24, lives in Wingdale, N.Y.

Ms. Johnson, whose parents, Robert and Jean Johnson, live in New Fairfield, was born in Danbury and graduated from Danbury High School in 1973.

She had been a postal employee in Brookfield since 1984 and was a member of several local organizations.

From the New York Times, October 12, 2004:

Single-Engine Plane Crashes Into House in Connecticut, Killing 2

A single-engine plane attempting to make an emergency landing in a ball field in Madison, Conn., instead plowed into a nearby house yesterday evening, killing the two people on board, officials and neighbors said.

Three residents of the home were inside at the time of the crash, but managed to escape, according to Robert Gerard, the chief of the Madison Fire Department.

The Madison police identified the victims as Scott Hanlon, 44, of New Milford, Conn., and Katherine Johnson, 49, of Danbury, Conn. Witnesses said that Mr. Hanlon was at the controls of the plane.

The crash startled residents of the quiet, semirural enclave on Long Island Sound, 20 miles east of New Haven. Neighbors said they did not hear any engine noise before the plane slammed into the Cape Cod-style house at 104 Lovers Lane at 5:52 p.m.

''It must have been gliding because the tops of the two huge trees they have outside were sheared off,'' said Frank Balisciano, 57, who lives next door. ''My wife and I were working in the room right next to the house and we heard no sounds, just a crash.''

Two minutes before the crash, the pilot radioed the radar control room at Bradley International Airport near Hartford; he issued a Mayday and said his engine had stopped running, according to Jim Peters, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

Mr. Peters said tapes of voice communications were being reviewed last night for additional clues to what went wrong.

Mr. Balisciano and Tom Schultz, a house painter who was painting nearby and witnessed the crash, were among the first on the scene.

''It was hard to process what I was seeing, something you never expect to see -- a plane hitting a house,'' Mr. Schultz said.

Sandra Davis, a neighbor, described the eerie aftermath: ''It was absolutely quiet and still. There were no ambulances, no fire trucks.''

Mr. Schultz said that he searched for family members in the house, but then learned that the three members of the family -- a couple and their young son -- who were at home at the time had safely escaped to the ball field. The couple's daughter was not home, the neighbors said.

The mother had been on the ground floor of the home when the plane struck, neighbors said.

With his ladder, Mr. Schultz reached the two people trapped in the mangled plane, which had hit the roof over the sun room and kitchen.

Ms. Johnson had already died, and Mr. Hanlon, who had only a faint pulse, died on the way to a nearby hospital, the authorities said.

The plane, a 1978 Piper Warrior, is registered to the Danbury Flight School, Mr. Peters said. The plane was en route from Nantucket Island to Danbury, he added.

From CTcentral.com, 13, Oct 2004:

Two dead in Madison plane crash

Pilot and passenger were killed, but those on the ground were not injured.

A single-engine two-seater airplane lost power and crashed into a Lover's Lane home Oct. 11 killing both pilot and passenger but leaving the residents of the home unharmed.

According to Madison police, the department's dispatch initially received a call at 5:55 p.m. from the Federal Aviation Administration at Bradley Airport that an airplane had made a distress call and then dropped off radar over Madison. That call was immediately followed by several 911 calls from the area reporting a plane had crashed into a house on 104 Lover's Lane.

Madison police were first on the scene approximately four minutes after the 911 call, followed by Madison Hose Company, North Madison Fire Department, Madison Ambulance and Guilford Ambulance. Eventually representatives from the FAA and the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection joined the scene.

Initially some neighbors rushed over, brought a ladder and tried to give aid to the two victims in the airplane. When members of Madison Hose arrived, they climbed onto the roof and extricated the victims, a job that took approximately 10 minutes.

Emergency personnel performed CPR on the victims, but a paramedic determined that passenger Katherine Johnson, 49, of Danbury had already died. Pilot Scott Hanlon, 44, of New Milford was rushed to Yale-New Haven Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Johnson and Hanlon were both employees of the Brookfield Post Office.

According to police, none of the three occupants of the home were injured as a result of the accident. Resident Francis Petrash and a child were inside the house when the crash occurred, but resident Shelby Head was outside the house and witnessed the crash.

"She rushed in to get them out, and then she broke her finger in the process," said Police Chief Paul Jakubson.

When the white and maroon-colored Piper plane made its descent, it first hit some surrounding trees, knocking off some small branches, then crashed into the roof of the home's winterized breezeway in the back of the home creating a 3-foot by 4-foot hole.

"At that point when it hit the dwelling it sheared one wing off, and then the nose of the aircraft went into the roof a little ways," said Madison Hose Fire Chief Bob Gerard.

Gerard said that approximately 20 gallons of aircraft fuel had leaked out of the airplane and into the house seeping into some furniture in the breezeway. Firefighters ventilated the house to keep the fumes down, and a representative from DEP removed the furniture.

"We contained the fuel, shut the fuel off and then disconnected the battery and moved the battery so there was no power in there," Gerard said. "And then disconnected the power to the home so there would be no other fire hazard."

The home's residents evacuated the house the night of the crash, and the plane was left where it crashed overnight. The following day, David Muzio, an investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board, came out and joined other agencies investigating the causes of the accident. Around 1 p.m. an enormous tow truck hoisted the plane off the roof and lowered it onto the back lawn.

Muzio said that all pieces of the plane had been recovered except for the two-bladed propeller, which had not been located. The propeller for this model of plane measures roughly four feet.

"Somebody may come forward if the propeller is located some place other than here," Muzio said. "They may have it in their back yard or in a field out back. The children might find it."

A cursory look at the engine and the airframe by Muzio did not reveal any "pre-impact failures," but it would be necessary to conduct a detailed examination. Muzio added that the airframe would probably be headed for a secured storage facility in Delaware while the engine would be taken to another location, as yet to be determined.

Although it has been speculated that the flight originated in Nantucket and was bound for Danbury, Muzio could not confirm this route. He noted, however, that he had been informed that Hanlon had called air traffic control on an emergency frequency, 121.5, informing air traffic control that he had lost power.

"Air traffic control was providing radar vectors to Griswold (Airport)," said Muzio. "And they also told the pilot that if he was unable to find or unable to reach Griswold that he might want to think about landing in a field."

It is possible that Hanlon was trying to reach Jaycees Field, located just across the street, in order to attempt a safe landing.
His obituary appeared in the 15 October 2004 News-Times of Danbury, Conn. and read as follows:

Scott Francis Hanlon, 44, of New Milford died in a plane crash Oct. 11 in Madison.
Mr. Hanlon was born April 3, 1960, in Bronx, N.Y., son of Virginia (Sabo) Hanlon and the late Bernard T. Hanlon.

He had lived in New Milford since 1990 and prior to that had lived in Winter Springs, Fla., and Brewster, N.Y. He was a 1978 graduate of Brewster High School and served in the U.S. Navy after high school.

He was employed with the U.S. Postal Service for the last 20 years, most recently with the Brookfield Post Office. He owned and operated Green Cuts Landscaping in New Milford, enjoyed scuba diving and was a private pilot.

Besides his mother, Mr. Hanlon is survived by a daughter, Melissa of Wingdale, N.Y; a son, Preston of New Milford; two brothers, Keith of Brewster and Craig of Newburgh, N.Y; two sisters, Allison Homberg of New Milford and Morgan O'Brien of Brewster; two grandchildren, Zaria Harrington and Paige of Wingdale; and his former wife, Robin.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated today (Friday) at 10 a.m. at St. Lawrence O'Toole Church in Brewster. Interment will be in St. Lawrence O'Toole Cemetery in Brewster.

The Beecher Funeral Home of Brewster, N.Y., is in charge of arrangements.1
