Abbie Aaron

This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Abbie Aaron was born on 25 January 1882 in New York, New YorkG.1,2 |
Marriage* | She married Michael Wolly, son of Moritz Jacob Wolly and Pauline Harris, on 4 March 1902 in Manhattan, New YorkG.3 |
Death* | Abbie Aaron died on 30 January 1962 in Manhattan, New YorkG.4 |
| In an 1895 article about her father the writer mentioned Abby: Miss Abby, aged 13, is a god-daughter of Al Smith's, [perhaps the Al Smith who was later Governor of New York and Presidential candidate who lost to Herbert Hoover in 1928] and she is a beauty bright. She reads French and English fluently, and her French has the true Parisian accent. She is an accomplished player on the piano and the pride of her doting father's heart. [The Enquirer, Cincinnatti, Ohio, 5 May 1895, p.23]
The 1940 census states that she had a four-year High School education.
When the 1905 New York state census was taken Abbie, Michael and young daughter Pauline were living at 127 East 76th Street in Manhattan, and Michael was in the jewelry business. Five years later they were at the same address, and Abbie's mother, sister and brother-in-law were now living next door. Michael's occupation was given as a superintendent for a paper box manufacturer. In the 1915 NY State census they are still there, with Michael's occupation stated simply as merchant. When the 1920 census was taken Abbie and Michael were living next door with Abbie's mother at 125 East 76th Street in Manhattan. Michael's occupation was recorded as "jewelry supplies." In a 1924 Manhattan voters list the family was living at 148 West 95th Street. Five years later the 1930 census records the family at 149-50 West 95th Street. Abbie's mother wais no longer with them, and Michael's occupation was as a window display salesman. Michael died suddenly in 1935 and in 1940 the widow Abbie and her daughter Pauline were living at 2 67th Street in Manhattan, and it said it was the same address they had been living on 1 Apr 1935. No occupation was listed for Abbie, but Pauline was the manager of a private school. Their apartment was in a building with many other families. Two other sources give their address as 1 West 67th Street at this time, but the census clearly says house number 2, and there is no "West" in the street name.
Abbie Wolly and her daughter Pauline are recorded on a 31 Jan 1938 passenger list of a ship arriving in New York Harbor from Palermo, Sicily. It includes their dates and places of birth, and gives their address as 1 West 67th Street in New York City.5 |
