He was a resident of Rosslyn. Educated in chemistry, with an eye toward medical school, he was a Foreign Service officer for nearly half a century, even as he pursued his lifelong passion, music. He was a composer of symphonies, quartets and piano music. His Symphony No. 1 was recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra and Symphonies 2 ("Taj Mahal") and 3 ("Etruscan Shadows") were recorded by the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra. The award-winning Penguin Quartet of Prague recorded all three of his string quartets, and the Welsh pianist Richard Ormrod recorded a double CD of his solo piano works in 2005. Mr. Schmelzer was born in Dracut, Mass., and served a tour of duty in the Army at the close of World War II. After graduating from Harvard College in 1950, he completed a year of South Asian studies, including Sanskrit, at the University of Pennsylvania. He entered the Foreign Service in 1952, serving in posts in Afghanistan, Hong Kong, Germany and Vietnam. As a linguist, he was most fluent in German and Hindustani, although he was comfortable in Italian, French and Latin. His contributions during his time in Vietnam earned him an award for meritorious service. Throughout his career with the Foreign Service, he pursued his musical interests. In his postings around the world, he sought out composers who could help him learn and refine his ideas. In Germany, he studied with Carlos Knupfer, a professor in Stuttgart, and in Florence with Franco Cioci at the Conservatorio Cherubini. He studied with Willis Bennett in Alexandria. He retired from the Foreign Service in 1979 and began work on a master's degree in composition at American University. He received his degree in 1983. SCHMELZER, Jr., a classical composer and retired Foreign Service Officer, died in Arlington, Virginia, on April 27, 2005. He was 77. Mr. Schmelzer was born in Massachusetts. After graduating from Harvard College in 1950, he completed a year of South Asian studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He served in the US Army from 1946 to 1947. Mr. Schmelzer joined the Department of State in 1952 and was assigned to New Delhi. Two years later, he was transferred to Frankfurt as a consular officer and received his commission as an FSO. In 1957 he was detailed to FSI to learn Hindi. In 1958 he was posted to Madras as a political officer. He was assigned to the political section of the US Embassy in Kabul in 1963. In 1965 he became Afghanistan desk officer at State. Later positions he held included staff aide to the under secretary for administration and political-military officer. From 1981 to early 2005 he was a senior reviewer in the Freedom of Information office at State, specializing in Near East affairs. Throughout his life, Mr. Schmelzer pursued his interest in music. At home and abroad, he sought out talented composers who could help him refine his ideas. In Germany, he studied with Carlos Knupfer; in Florence, with Franco Cioci at the Conservatorio Cherubini; in Virginia, with Willis Bennett. Soon after he retired, he pursued an MA in composition at American University, studying with Haig Mardirosian, Jerzy Sapieyevski, and Thomas Ludwig. As a composer of symphonies, quartets, and piano music, Mr. Schmelzer was regarded by some critics as a modern-day Charles Ives. His Symphony No. 1 was recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra. His Symphonies No. 2 (Taj Mahal) and No. 3 (Etruscan Shadows) were recorded by the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra with Thomas Ludwig conducting. The Penguin Quartet of Prague recorded all three of his string quartets. In 2005, Welsh pianist Richard Ormrod recorded a double CD of his solo works for piano. Just as Ives was discovered as a major figure in American music only after his death, so also is Mr. Schmelzer likely to be revealed on the basis of his recorded legacy. Mr. Scmelzer is survived by his wife, Mary Jean, of their home in Arlington; his father; a son, Frederick, by his former wife, Jo Ann Kock; and two grandchildren.
