His name read "Giuseppe" on his birth record, but he went by Joseph later on, while his parents were later called Henry and Henrietta. His mother's maiden name was "Ulmeri" on Joseph's birth record, "Oslemi" on his marriage record, "Olmire" on his death record and on his brother John's death record4, "Olmese" on his brother John's birth record5, "Olmesi" on his sister Rita's birth record6 and his brother Henry's death record7, "Ulmesi" on his sister Mary's birth record8, and "Olmise" on his mother's own death certificate. His parents were both from Italy. What his mother's actual maiden name was is unknown. It seems that even family members were uncertain as to its correct spelling. "Olmire" is used here because it appears on two separate family records, and on his brother John's record Joseph himself was the informant. So apparently "Olmire" is the spelling that Joseph considered as the correct one for his mother. Doing an Internet search on Google for all of these spellings, using only Italian language pages, shows none of them to be very popular. Olmire only brought up two pages. Olmese brought up 93, but they all seemed to be place names rather than surnames. Olmesi brought up 10, Ulmeri 1, Ulmesi 1, and Oslemi 2. Another possibility may be Ulmari. Searching a database that presents geographical locations where surnames can be found in Italy, none of the choices listed above has any hits, but Ulmari gets one hit in the region of Lombardia.
Joseph was living at 86 Westwood Road in Medford when he died.3

Burial*He was buried on 5 November 1929 in Chenango Valley Cemetery in Binghamton, Broome County, New YorkG.10
When the 1880 census was taken James was listed as a five year old living with his parents and siblings in "Enumerator's District 40" in the county of Falls, Texas. His father was born in Tennessee and his mother in Mississippi. The 1892 and 1893 directories of Waco, Texas show a James N. Clay working as a clerk for Joe S. Thompson and living with W.C. Clay, likely his father. Joseph S. Thompson owned a grocery store.

After he deserted his wife and children in Massachusetts he continued on in Amsterdam, N.Y. As a travelling salesman he had been familiar with Amsterdam for years, as evidenced by a notice in the 25 Aug 1905 issue of the Amsterdam Evening Recorder, p.2, that includes "James N. Clay, Boston" on a list of names of people who had stayed at the Warner hotel recently. He likely met his second wife Bertha Gilchrist on one of those trips.

There is a World War I draft registration card on ancestry.com for James Newton Clay of 359 Division Street, Amsterdam, N.Y. whose nearest relative is Bertha Christine Clay of the same address. This James was a travelling salesman with the United Mattress Machinery Co. of Boston. His birth date was 7 Jan 1873 which matches with our James' 1900 census birth date of Jan 1873. This Bertha is likely the "daughter of a prominent family of Amsterdam" mentioned in the 1915 newspaper article about his arrest in Kansas City.

The 31 Dec 1919 issue, p.5, of the Press and Sun-Bulletin of Binghamton, N.Y. has a story about the opening of a new mattress factory in town to be known as the James N. Clay Bedding Co. Said to be set to employ about 150 men it was to be located on the property known as the Beaman Box Factory or the Chenango Chemical Co. Factory on Frederick Street. "The consummation of the deal took place this morning in the office of Hiram Goldsmith when the property which was owned by George Fowler of the Boston store passed to James N. Clay of Tulsa, Okla. Mr. Clay announced that he would start work after extensive repairs to the building and would manufacture for the wholesale trade mattresses, box springs and pillows of all kinds. Mr. Clay said that he had been road manager for the United Mattress Machinery Co. of Boston for a period of 25 years and was first brought in touch with Binghamton some time ago and passed through this city frequently up until about five years ago."

James and Bertha haven't been located in the 1920 census using online indexes trying a variety of searches. A search of directories and census for Tulsa, OK was also made, given that the 1919 article above stated that he was from Tulsa at the time he purchased the property for his new business.

James and Bertha were living at 18 DeForest Street in Binghamton in that city's 1920 directory, and he owned the J N Clay Bedding Company on 11 Frederick Street. They were not there in the 1919 directory, but in 1921-23 they appear again with the only differences being the addition of a middle initial of C. for Bertha and the address of the bedding company being 9-11 Frederick. They apparently weren't yet living on DeForest Street when the 1920 census was taken on January 8th as a different family is recorded as living at number 18 DeForest then.

The Press and Sun-Bulletin of Binghamton for 10 Oct 1921, p.5, reports that the Clay Bedding Co. of 9 and 11 Frederick Street had become incorporated. "The company will have a capital stock of $50,000 and willl manufacture mattresses, box springs, feather pillows, upholstered chairs, woven wire springs and felt. The directors are James Clay, Alberta Clay, and J.Y. Smith. James N. Clay is president and treasurer and A.J. Norton is secretary. President Clay said today that the object of incorporation is to provide for a rapid and extensive enlargement of the business. He declared that the business has grown so rapidly recently as to make it practically impossible to handle it as a one man concern. He said that the concern is three weeks behind its orders and that to take care of the increasing business new machinery will be added to the equipment and the number of employees will be enlarged as rapidly as possible.

In the 10 Feb 1923 issue of the Cortland Standard, [Cortland, N.Y.] p.7, the J. N. Clay Bedding Co., Inc. took out a half page ad promoting the sale of $50,000 worth of company stock. In the text of the ad it gives some history of the company, including: "James N. Clay, founder, has been since boyhood connected with some feature of the mattress business, and for twenty-four years was in the employ of the United Mattress Machinery Co of Boston, Mass. Mr. Clay organized the business on January 1, 1920. It was incorporated October 1, 1921, and a branch factory was opened in Cortland on August 1, 1922."

The 11 May 1923 issue of the Press and Sun-Bulletin, p.36, of Binghamton records two land transactions where James N. Clay sold to Elberto [sic] G. Clay property on the north and south sides of Frederick Street.

Apparently his business expansion and sale of stock didn't go well as by the summer of 1923 they were in debt and the company had to be sold in bankruptcy. [Press and Sun-Bulletin, Binghamton, N.Y., 17 Jul 1923, p.7; 25 Jul 1923, p.3] In November of 1923 he filed for personal bankruptcy. [Press and Sun-Bulletin, Binghamton, N.Y., 12 Nov 1923, p.7] He not only had financial troubles this summer but was arrested for drunk driving in July. [Press and Sun-Bulletin, Binghamton, N.Y., 9 Jul 1923, p.3] He faced trial in December and was convicted and sentence to ten days in jail. [Press and Sun-Bulletin, Binghamton, N.Y., 11 Dec 1923, p.8; 12 Dec 1923, p.13]

The 1924 Binghamton directory has them now at 14 DeForest and though he is still a mattress maker it doesn't include the company name or address. In the street directory section 11 Frederick Street is listed as vacant. They are gone from the 1925 Binghamton directory, as they apparently moved back to Amsterdam. James N. Clay and wife Elberta G. were enumerated in the 1925 NY State Census for Amsterdam at 363 Division Street. He was age 66 and she was 42. He was a "Traveling man" and she was a saleslady. The 1925 Amsterdam city directory lists only Bertha G. [not C.] at that address, no James, but it also doesn't say she is a widow. The 1930 census of Amsterdam has Elberta G. Clay as a 50-year-old widow living with her daughter Una Hoffman, age 2/12, and mother-in-law Rochel Osterhout. This Una was born on 18 Jan 1930 in Amsterdam. Bertha G. Clay died 8 Jan 1939 in Amsterdam.

Back in Binghamton James N. Clay shows up again in 1927, this time living at 52 Main Street with wife Mabel W. and in the employ of a company called Clay & Gollogly of 95 Main Street. That company is further described as run by M.W. Clay and J.W. Gollogly. The mattress company job would seem to indicate that this is the same James, but does he now have a different wife, perhaps having met her because she was a partner in a mattress company? Or did he just put his wife's name on the business listing? Jonathan W. Gollogly was the other partner and also lived at 52 Main Street with his wife Violet C. Neither Clay nor Gollogly were there in the previous year's Binghamton directory. The next year, 1928, James N. Clay is listed with wife Mabel W. and is a salesman and they live at 23 North Street. Gollogly wasn't listed. In 1929 James and Mabel were living at 53 1/2 Seminary Avenue in Binghamton and he was still a salesman. The 1930 Bingham directory has Mabel W. Clay living as the widow of James N. Clay at 48 Chestnut Street. So both of James' two new York wives - Bertha and Mabel - are listed said to have been his widow in 1930. Mabel Clay continues to be listed in the Binghamton directories for many years as widow of James.

James was killed when his car was struck by a train. A newspaper account tells the story:

James N. Clay Hit by Train Near Barton. Chestnut St. Resident Succumbs Shortly Afterward in Packer Hospital. WAS WARNED BY WIFE. Started Out Early This Morning on Hunting Trip by Himself. Special to The Binghamton Press.

Waverly, Nov. 2 -- James N. Clay, 48, of 48 Chestnut street, Binghamton, was fatally injured early this morning when his automobile was struck by an Erie railroad passenger train on a grade crossing near Burton. He died from the injuries in the Robert Packer hospital at Sayre shortly before noon.

Clay was alone in the automobile at the time of the crash. The car was demolished by the impact and Clay was badly crushed. He was picked up by members of the train crew and brought to Waverly on the train. He died without regaining consciousness.

At the time of the accident Clay was on a hunting trip. A number of shells for a shotgun were found scattered about in the vicinity of the wreck.

"I told him to be careful," Mrs. Clay said this morning when notified of the accident by a reporter of The Binghamton Press and asked regarding the trip of her husband. She said he left home early this morning.

Clay was a traveling salesman and was employed by a Chicago firm. He had lived in this city for several years, residing at 53 Seminary avenue before moving to Chestnut street. He is survived by his wife, Mabel; four brothers, Jean of St. Louis, and John, Sheldon and Clifford of Waco, Texas, and a sister living in Denver, Col. The body was brought to this city and was taken to the George H. Scholderer home for funerals, 269 Chenango street.
[Press and Sun-Bulletin, Binghamton, N.Y., 2 Nov 1929, p.3, ]

Another newspaper account of the accident adds "Mr. Clay was unconscious when picked up by members of the train crew and was brought to the Erie station at Waverly in the baggage car. He was received at the Packer Hospital here at 11:05 and died at 11:15, without regaining consciousness. [Elmira Star-Gazette, 2 Nov 1929, p.13]

His death record describes his cause of death: "Compound fracture left frontal bone. Compressed - first four ribs. Both sides fractured. Auto he was driving stuck by Erie locomotive."

His death record states that he was born 4 Jan 1881 in Texas and was aged 48y, 9m, 28d. His wife was the informant and was living at 48 Chestnut Street in Bingham at the time. This erroneous date of death has led some online trees to confuse him with a James Newton Clay who was born in George in Jan 1881, but that man lived his entire life in Georgia. Our James apparently told his wife he was younger than he actually was.

After his death the Erie Railroad settled a lawsuit against them for $3000, which was later reported to be the only asset of his estate after his death. ["Erie Settles Death Claim for $3000," Binghamton Press, 24 Jan 1930, p.1]

Birth*Louisa Henrietta Schmelzer was born on 27 July 1865 in Bad Pyrmont, Hamelin-Pyrmont, Lower Saxony, GermanyG.1
Marriage*She married William John Montgomery, son of William H. Montgomery and Eliza Jane Bell, on 8 October 1886 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.2
Death*Louisa died of heart disease on 5 May 1960 at 66 West Street in Reading, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.3
Burial*She was buried on 7 May 1960 in Forestdale Cemetery in Malden, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.3
Louisa was born in Germany and came to this country with her family as a child. Her sister Carrie's death record states that the emigration took place in 1872, while Louisa's 1910 census record states that she came in 1873. Her 1920 census record states that she came to this country in 1882. We know that is incorrect because she was recorded here in the 1880 census. Her occupation was listed as "Dressmaker" in the 1880 census of Cambridge, Mass. The 1920 census records that she became a naturalized American citizen in 1885, although the 1910 census does not mention that she was naturalized. The 1930 census, at which time she was living with her son Harry at 12 Boulder Street in Malden, gives a date of 1868 for her immigration.

When they were married in 1886 William was an expressman and they both lived in Cambridge. When their daughter Maud was born in 1887 William was still an expressman and they were still living in Cambridge. A year later when son William was born father William was a clerk and they were still in Cambridge. In 1890 and 1892 when Henry and Charles were born he was an expressman again and they were still in Cambridge. In the 1910 census Louisa was listed as the head of the family, but as married rather than widowed. Her husband was not listed as living with them. Louisa's occupation was given as the proprietor of a boarding house and, in fact, there were two boarders living with them at the time. It was stated that she was the mother of four children, two of whom were still living. They were living at 532 Pleasant Street in Malden, Mass. at the time. There is a William Montgomery, age 52, lodging in what appears to be a boarding house at 50 Austin St. in Cambridge. This William was born in Mass., married for 22 years, and worked as a teamster in the furniture business, so sounds like a likely candidate. By 1920 Louisa and William were living together again, this time in Melrose at the home of their son William H. Montgomery at 8 Whittier Street. Neither was listed as being employed. They were still at that address in September of the same year when William passed away. His occupation was given as "retired expressman." He was said to have been at the 8 Whittier Street address for three years. In 1930 Louisa was a widow living in Malden with her son Harry and his family. She was living in Malden, Mass. in August 1942 and November 1949.

Louisa's death certificate gave her residence as 159 Melrose Street in Melrose, Mass., which is where her son William lived, and stated that she had lived in Melrose for the past 10 years. Her obituary in the Melrose Free Press, May 12, 1960, p.5a stated that "she was the last surviving member of the old Dorcas Society of the Edgeworth Chapel, which years ago was built and conducted by the First Congregational Church of Malden."

Birth*Amelia C. Schmelzer was born in April 1867 in Berlin, Brandenburg, PrussiaG.1
Marriage*She married Daniel W. Gillis, son of Murdock Gillis and Margaret (?), on 1 July 1886 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.2
Death*Amelia died of cancer in her left arm on 19 August 1942 at home, 311 Forest Street in Malden, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.3
Burial*She was buried on 22 August 1942 in Forestdale Cemetery in Malden.3
Her occupation was given as "Dressmaker" in the 1880 census of Cambridge. At the time of their marriage in 1886 Daniel worked as a printer and lived in Cambridge, as did Amelia.

When the 1900 census was taken on June 2nd Daniel and Amelia and their son Donald were living at 95 West Street in Malden, Mass. Daniel was a grocer who owned his own business, having emigrated to this country in 1870. Amelia came over in 1880 according to this census record. The census also gave the birth month and year for all three of them. Amelia's widowed mother was living with them as well.

The 1908, 1909 and 1910 city directories of Malden, Mass. show them living at 19 Sheridan Street where Daniel was a grocer with his own business. When the 1910 census was taken on April 21st their niece Ruth Varney was living with them. Daniel was said to have been a naturalized citizen at the time, having emigrated from Canada in 1880, and Amelia from Germany in 1878. The 1920 census taken on January 7th has the family at 11 Sheridan Street in Malden. Daniel's occupation was listed as "retail merchant" in groceries, and son Donald was a chauffeur in the laundry business. Ruth Varney was a typist for an insurance company.

The Malden city directories for 1919 and 1921 (not published in 1920) show the family at 11 Sheridan Street with the grocery business around the corner at 103 Oakland Street. This was probably the same building. There were no Malden directories published in 1922 and 23 but by 1924 they show him living at 70 Kimball Street. This was right next door to his nephew Harry Montgomery and his wife Tenna. Their niece Ruth Varney was still living with them in 1924, but this time her last name was given as Gillis. If she had taken the name Gillis by this point she didn't keep it forever because she was known as Ruth Varney later in life. Daniel's and Amelia's obituaries both called Ruth their daughter, so perhaps she was formally or informally adopted by them.

When the 1930 census was taken on April 14th Ruth was once again called Varney, still living with Daniel and Amelia at 311 Forest Street in Malden. They owned their own home, worth $5000. Daniel was said to have emigrated in 1880 and Amelia in 1873, both being naturalized citizens. Neither was employed at the time, but Ruth Varney was a typist in an insurance business. His nephew Harry Montgomery and family once again lived nearby, just around the corner on Boulder St.

When Amelia died in 1942 she was still living at 311 Forest Street in Malden, and had been a resident of Malden for the past 45-50 years. Her obituary in the Malden Evening News (August 20, 1942, p.7) states that she "was active for some years in the Forest Dale chapel and its Dorcas Society, and also held membership in the First Congregational Church". Forest Dale is a section of Malden.

When Daniel died the following year he was at the same address, and he had been a resident of Malden for the past 65 years. His obituary in the Malden Evening News (April 10, 1943, p.1) stated that he was for many years proprietor of a community store at the corner of Oakland and Sheridan streets in the Edgeworth section of Malden. He retired some twenty years before his death due to ill health. It went on to say that as a young man he was a printer and was a member of the Franklin Typographical Union and the First Congregational Church.

According to the 1910 census Amelia was the mother of only one child, living or dead.

Burial*He was buried on 22 October 1958 in Fox Hill Cemetery in Billerica.3
On his marriage record his name was recorded as Henry J. L. Schmelzer, and his son Charles's death record stated it as Henry Louis Philip Schmelzer. He was a grocer living in Cambridge, Mass. and Bertha was an operative living in Malden, Mass.

When their son Raymond was born in Billerica, Mass. in 1900 Henry was a butcher. The same was true when Charles was born 2 years later. When Frank was born in 1906 they were living on Warren Avenue in Malden and Henry was a meat cutter.

In Jan 1942 they were living on Andover Road in Billerica. They were still living in Billerica in Nov 1949. When he died in 1958 he was living at 17 Bridge Street in Billerica, and according to the death certificate had been living in Billerica for the past 60 years, although this isn't true since they were in Malden as late as 1906. He was a farmer on his own farm. When Bertha died almost a year later she was living at the same address, and had been living in Billerica for 59 years, according to her death record.

When they were married Louis was a milkman and May was a bookkeeper and they both lived in Malden. When their daughter Florence was born in 1899 Louis worked as a salesman and they were living in Malden, perhaps at 17 Linwood Street where Florence was born. They cannot be located (yet) in the 1900 census, but a 1907 Medford, Mass. city directory has them living at 11 Cudworth Street. Louis' widowed mother was living there as well. The 1910 census has them still at 11 Cudworth Street. Louis worked as a grocery store clerk at the time. By 1914 city directories of Malden have them living at 30 Park Street in Medford, where they remained for the rest of Louis' life and much of May's. In 1920 he was a chauffeur for a grocery store, and in 1930 a salesman for a grocery store. In all three censuses they had a boarder by the name of Alfred R. Avery living with them, and in 1920-30 Marea's unmarried sister Ella Schmelzer was with them as well.

According to Louis' death certificate he had last worked in June of 1930 after working for twenty years as a salesman in the grocery business. They were still living at 30 Park Street in Medford at the time.

May was living in Medford in Aug 1942 and Nov 1949, and when her daughter died in 1953, May was living with their 30 Park Street home. When she died in 1971 May was living at the Shephard Brooks Home in Medford. Before moving there she had been living at 92 Park Street in Medford.

She was living in Medford in Aug 1942 and in Melrose, Mass. in 1949. By the time the 1947 Melrose city directory came out she had moved to 300 Washington Street in Melrose to live with her niece Mildred (Aaron) Teschek and husband Herman. She continued to live with Mildred for the rest of her life. She spent a total of 35 years living in Melrose, where she was a member of the First Congregational Church. 1. Birth date comes from his death record, and the names of his parents and his place of birth are taken from the death record and from birth certificates of his children. The 1860 census said he was 7 months old when the census was taken on June 1st. The 1870 census of his parents household in Cambridge, Mass., taken on June 1st, gives his age as ten. No birth record could be found for him in Mass. vital records looking through the sections for Charlestown for 1858 and 1859, and he wasn't listed in the indexes for the years 1856-1870. Since his parents appear to have been married a few months after his birth he would have been born illegitimately, and may have had a different father. No William Bell can be found born in that time period either.

Birth*Raymond Herman Schmelzer was born on 19 October 1900 in Billerica, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG. (The middle name on his birth record in Mass. vital records was Homan but he went by Herman later so perhaps this record, which is a copy of the original, was transcribed incorrectly. Also the date on the record was clearly 1901 even though all those around it were 1900. We will assume that it should have been 1900. The original record in Billerica should be checked to make sure.)1
Marriage*He married first Miriam Hilda Smith, daughter of Fred Corliss Smith and Mabel Morton Cowdrey, on 4 December 1923 on Treble Cove Rd. in Billerica, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.2
Marriage*He married second Ellen Elizabeth Cooke, daughter of Edward H. Cooke and Anna M. Lucas, on 20 February 1971 in Athol, Worcester County, MassachusettsG.3
Death*Raymond died of a heart attack on 27 February 1986 at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.4
Burial*He was buried on 3 March 1986 in North Cemetery in Billerica.4
On his first marriage record he gave his name as Herman Raymond Schmelzer, but went by Raymond later. At that time he was a meat cutter living in Billerica and Miriam was living with her parents, also in Billerica. When the 1930 census was taken he and Miriam were living on Boston Road in Billerica. They owned their own home worth $7500 and Raymond was an advertising salesman. The 15 Sep 1932 issue of the Boston Globe (p.10) has this small news item: "Yesterday afternoon a wheel came off a truck operated by Joseph E. Dowding, 709 Lowell st., Methuen, and hit an automobile operated by H. Raymond Schmelzer, Whiting st., Billerica. The accident happened on Mystic st. Considerable damage was done to the Schmelzer car." In the 1940 census they were still living on Whiting Street in Billerica. Herman worked as a salesman in the photo engraving industry while Miriam was a clerk in a hospital. They owned their own home worth $5000.

When the 1940 and 1950 censuses were taken Raymond and Miriam were still living on Whiting Street in Billerica, in the third house on the right according to the 1950 census taker. They were in the same house in 1935, which they owned and was valued at $5000 in 1940. That year he was listed as Herman R. Smeltzer and worked as a salesman for a photo engraving company. Miriam worked part time as a clerk in a hospital. In 1950 he worked as a specialized machinist for an electrical appliance manufacturer.

He was a machinist for the General Electric Co. in Lynn and Everett and a member of the first Parish Church and Thomas Talbot Masonic Lodge, both in Billerica. Raymond was born in Billerica and lived there all his life. When his mother died in 1959 he was living at 13 Whiting Street and was still there when he died in 1986. His first wife Miriam lived in Billerica her entire life, according to her death record.

Her obituary appeared in a 21 December 1953 Medford newspaper and read as follows:

CHILDREN MOURN PASSING OF BELOVED STORY TELLER Florence Baker, Librarian, Dies After Illness. Miss Florence C. Baker, 54, known to thousands of Medford children and adults for the story telling sessions she conducted for 24 years as children's librarian of the Medford Public library, died at her home this morning. She lived with her mother, Mrs. Marea C. Baker, at 30 Park street. Stricken ill in July shortly after her return from a vacation in Bermuda, she spent several months in the Massachusetts General Hospital. The last few months were spent at her home. As news of Miss Baker's death reached the city's schools, children and teachers mourned the beloved story-teller, whose recital of stories made fictional characters come alive for thousands of youngsters. A member of the library staff for nearly 30 years and children's librarian for the last 24 years, Miss Baker was one of the most widely known figures in the city to countless school children, and to many of their parents who knew of her through their children. She expanded the library's story-telling program until it became one of the most popular and widely attended features offered by the Medford Public Library. She travelled throughout the city to branch libraries, schools, Girl Scout camps, and playgrounds to tell stories to children. Children sat fascinated and silent listening to her weave tales for them with a technique that she developed to perfection over the years. Youngsters flocked to the children's library to attend the regular story hours over which she presided. A small, retiring person who until a little more than a year ago rode between the library and her home on a bicycle, Miss Baker devoted her life to the children of Medford. She was head of the children's library, an ancient building next to the main library on High street, and supervisor of all library work in the city's elementary schools. She had made several trips to Europe, the last in the summer of 1952, and had been on trips to the Pacific Coast of the United States several times. On her trips abroad she took colored slides which she showed to members of the library staff. Before her illness, it was planned to have her show the slides at a regular Tuesday morning library book talk. She also played the violin as a hobby. Born in Malden, she had lived in Medford 47 years. She graduated from Medford High School, and later attended Boston University, Harvard University, the University of New Hampshire, and Simmons College in connection with her library work. She was an instructor at Bryant and Stratton Commercial School for about three years before coming to work for the Medford library. She was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church here. She was a member of the Shakespeare Club of Medford, the Children's Round Table of the Massachusetts Library Association, and the Charles River Library Association. Especially interested in Foreign languages, she had taken courses in German and other languages. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 P.M. at Grace Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Angus Dun, Jr., rector of the church, officiating. Burial will be in Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden. The city's flags flew at half mast today to honor the deceased children's librarian. The Medford Public Library is expected to close during funeral services Wednesday, and the entire library staff is expected to attend the funeral.

Birth*Ralph Siebert Varney was born on 16 March 1902 in Winchester, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.1
Marriage*He married Gertrude May Sadler, daughter of Edmund M. Sadler and Elizabeth Purdy, in 1926.
Death*Ralph died on 19 September 1974 at a local hospital in Brunswick, Cumberland County, MaineG. He was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Brunswick, Maine.2
After his mother died in 1907 Ralph spent the rest of his childhood living with other relatives, as his father was apparently incapable of taking care of his children, possibly due to alcoholism. When the 1910 census was taken on April 30th Ralph was living with his aunt Louisa Montgomery at 532 Pleasant St. in Malden, Mass.

When the 1920 census was taken on January 20th of that year Ralph was living on 8 Whittier St. in Melrose, Mass. in the household of his cousin William Montgomery. He was a 17-year-old apprentice engraver at the time.3 That same year Gertrude was living with her brother Milton P. Sadler and two of her sisters on Westville Road in Boston, having earlier attended schools in Dorcheter, Mass. Milton was a jeweler with his own store at this time, and Gertrude worked as a secretary there.4 It seems possible that the apprentice engraver Ralph Varney may have worked for them, explaining how he and Gertrude met.

In 1926 he and Gertrude were married and by 1928 were living in her family home on Merriconeag Road in Brunswick, Maine, which at this time was farmed by her brother Milton. According to the 1928-29 Brunswick city directory he was employed as a landscape artist.

Later he became a pharmacist and worked in Dorchester, Mass. The 1932 directory of Brunswick said he and Gerturde still lived with Milton P. Sadler on Merriconeag Road and that he was employed as a druggiest in Dorchester. Even though city directories place him in Brunswick with Milton Sadler in 1928 and 1932, he was not enumerated in that household in the 1930 census, and hasn't yet been located elsewhere.

Gertrude's obituary states that she was a resident of Brunswick since 1939, while Ralph's obituary states that he moved in 1940 to Bath, Maine, where he was employed at Carl's Drug Store. In 1950 he moved to Brunswick, Maine where he was manager of Allen's Drug Store at 148 Maine St. until his retirement in May 1973. They had a home on Harpswell Road in Brunswick. Ralph was a member of the First Parish Church of Brunswick, the United Lodge of Masons, the Brunswick Lodge of Elks and the National Association of Retail Druggists.

     They had no children.
His obituary appeared in the 20 September 1974 Brunswick Times Record and read as follows:

Death*Ruth died, on 10 October 1978, at a local hospital, in Brunswick, Cumberland County, MaineG. She was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Brunswick, Maine..2
She never married and had no children. At some point soon after her mother died in 1907 Ruth and her brother Ralph went to live with her uncle and aunt Joseph and Carrie Aaron for a few years.3 This may have been due to a drinking problem on the part of her father. Ruth was enumerated with the her aunt and uncle Amelia and Daniel Gillis in the 1910, 19204 and 19305 censuses of Malden, and was listed with them in the 1919, 1921 and 1924 Malden city directories. The latter directory listed her as Ruth Gillis by mistake. The above mentioned city directories said that she was a stenographer working in Boston. The 1920 and 1930 censuses stated that she was a typist for an insurance company. Her obituary stated that she worked for 46 years in the underwriting department of the Travelers Insurance Company.

In 1943 she was living at 311 Forest St. in Malden, Mass. with her uncle Daniel Gillis when he died. She was still there when her father died three years later, her father living with her. In 1973 she was living with her cousin Mildred (Aaron) Teschek and aunt Ella Schmelzer at 300 Washington St. in Melrose, Mass. For several months before her death in 1978 when she was living with her sister-in-law E. Pearl Hendrickson of Brunswick, Maine. Pearl was the sister of Ruth's brother Ralph's wife Gertrude.

When they married in 1910 James was a car inspector living in Everett, Mass. and Martha was living in Malden, Mass. The 1910 census, taken earlier that year, said she was living with her parents at 203 Adams Street in Malden and was an apprentice in a dye house. In that same census James was living with is parents and siblings on 74 Everett Street in Everett and was employed as a trainman on a steam railroad. It further stated that he came to this country in 1909 with some of his siblings, while his parents came in 1908. The 1930 census stated that he came to this country in 1896.

When their daughter Ruth was born in 1911 James was a railroad employee and they were living with Martha's parents at 295 Wyoming Avenue in Stoneham, Mass. When their son Chester was born in 1914 James was a teamster and they were living in Melrose. When son James was born in 1924 James Sr. was an ice dealer and they were living at 295 Wyoming Avenue in Melrose. Martha's parents had moved to Maine by this time. [This address was right on the border of the two towns]. In August 1928 they were living at 293 West Wyoming Avenue in Melrose. When the 1930 census was taken on April 1, the family was still living at 293 Wyoming Avenue, in a rented house. James was employed as an ice merchant.

The 1950 census found James and Martha living at 308 Washington Street, a few doors down from Martha's sister Mildred and her husband Herman Teschek at 300 Washington Street. Their son Ken and family were at 317 Washington. For the last 30 or 40 years of their lives they lived in this upstairs apartment at 308 Washington. On James's death record it stated that he had lived in Melrose for 48 years.

The 1910 census of Malden, where he was living with his parents, lists him as an apprentice in a dye house. At the time of his marriage he gave his occupation as "Teamster". When his son was born Edward had been dead a week but the birth certificate gave his occupation as milkman. His residence was 304 Washington Street in Melrose. A short death announcement in a local paper called him a "driver for a milk route."4

Mildred was living with her parents and siblings on Franklin Street in Cambridge when the 1910 census was taken. After her husband and son had died she took up with a man named Albert Shea with whom she had a stillborn daughter on 9 Oct 1919. Albert was a 22-year-old expressman born in California living with her at 296 Folsom Avenue in Melrose, which was her parents' house. ["Massachusetts State Vital Records, 1841-1925", FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QLGR-281J] The maiden name on her record at this point was Mildred Anna Caswell, but on the infant's death record she was referred to as Mildred Shea. The child was buried in Wyoming Cemetery on October 15th. ["Massachusetts State Vital Records, 1841-1925", FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:23T6-5BB]

After the death of her husband and son she moved back in with her parents, in whose household she was enumerated when the 1920 census was taken. They were living at 296 Folsom Avenue in Melrose and Mildred was widowed and working in a shoe factory. Her surname was Caswell, not Aaron, in the census. On 2 Sep 1921 she gave birth to a stillborn baby boy while living at 296 Folsom Avenue. ["Massachusetts State Vital Records, 1841-1925", FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6CBH-7KDT] Syphilis was listed as a probable contributing cause of the stillbirth. The infant was buried in Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose two days later. ["Massachusetts State Vital Records, 1841-1925", FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6Z6N-DW94]

She wasn't found in her parents' household in the 1930 census, and nothing further is known about her.
