- Proof of their marriage comes from Amsterdam, N.Y. city directories, James' World War I draft card, Bertha's death notice, and the 1915 story of how James was arrested in Kansas City for desertion. That story said he had been married to a woman in Amsterdam already so a marriage date of 1914 is being estimated. No record of the actual marriage has been found yet.
