| After his father's death in 1901 Ronald and his brother returned to Orkney to live with relatives. When World War I broke out he was living in Kirkwall and on 1 Feb 1915 enlisted in the Black Watch Regiments for the duration of the war. The first three years he was fortunate to be able to spend in various places in Scotland and England, training or doing desk jobs. But at the beginning of 1918 he was shipped to France where he served as a machine gunner, one of the more hazardous jobs. Most of the men with whom he served were killed but he escaped unscathed until about a month before the war ended when he was shot in the leg and left the battle front for good. During his year at the front he saw active duty at the Somme, Ypres and the assault on the Hindenburg Line. Later in life he wrote a short unpublished book for his son all about his wartime experiences titled "Those Four Years". His grandson Gordon has the original, and the author of this genealogy has a copy.
At some point not long after the war he moved to Canada, and was an accountant in the 1920's to 1940's for a manufacturer of sewer pipes, and in the late 1920's or 1930's was transferred to Toronto. He may have met his wife Amy Eunson in Hamilton through the local Orkney and Shetland Islands Association.5 They were both living in Hamilton when they married. He was a clerk and she was a bookkeeper. Their marriage record gives their religious affiliation. Ronald was Congregationalist and Amelia was a Unitarian. They were married by the Congregational minister W.R. Mackay in the minister's place of residence. |

| David served and died in World War I as a private in the 16th Batallion, Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment). The website that gives the record of his death and burial does not say where he died, only when. In describing the cemetery in which he is buried it has this to say: "La Petite Douve farm was the object of a celebrated raid by the 7th Canadian Infantry Battalion in November, 1915. La Plus Douve farm, which was generally within the British lines, was used at times as a Battalion Headquarters; and it was also known as Ration Farm from the fact that the Battalion transport could approach it at night with rations. Ration Farm (La Plus Douve) was begun in April, 1915, by the 48th (South Midland) Division, and it continued in use until May, 1918, when it fell into enemy hands. There are now over 300, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site. The cemetery covers an area of 3,025 square metres."3 |
