He was a patient at the Medfield State Hospital for the Insane in Medfield, Mass. in the 1910 and 1930 censuses. He has a World War I draft card filled out on 12 Sep 1918 that says he was an inmate at the hospital who was ineligible due to insanity. His death record said that he had been a resident of Boston for 28 years, so if they are using Boston loosely to describe the hospital in Medfield where he died then he had been there since around 1905. He never married. |

Birth* | Winnifred A. Atkins was born on 26 August 1862 in Great Falls, Somersworth, Strafford County, New HampshireG.1 |
Marriage* | She married first Robert Francis Tolman, son of Robert Francis Tolman and Martha Ann Hart, on 8 November 1883, probably in Milton Mills, Strafford County, New HampshireG. Their marriage was recorded in Melrose, Mass., where Robert lived, but was performed by the Rev. G. S. Butler of Milton Mills, N.H. As no specific place of marriage was given on the Melrose record, it is assumed that the marriage took place in Milton Mills. Milton records should be checked to verify this.2 |
Marriage* | She married second John Cross, son of John Lewis Cross and Mary Susan Ramsdell, on 1 October 1895 in Malden, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.3 |
Death* | Winnifred A. Atkins died on 22 January 1945.4 |

| She grew up in Great Falls (Somersworth) and Milton Mills, NH, where she was living when she first married in 1883. By 1888 when her son Harold was born and quickly died she and her husband Robert, a clergyman, were living in Gardner, Mass. Mass. Vital Records has no other Tolman children born in Gardner before 1888. They were still there when he died in Nov. 1892. When Winnifred remarried three years later she was living in Lynn, possibly with her father and step-mother, who were also in Lynn at the time. Her new husband John, a druggist, was living in Malden.
The 1900 census found the family living at 20 Atkins Avenue in Lynn. John Cross's occupation was listed as electrician. Winifred was the mother of four children, three whom were then living.
By 1910 the Cross family had moved to Yonkers, N.Y., where John still worked as an electrician. Winifred was said to be the mother of 6 children, four of whom were then living, so one child who died young is yet to be accounted for. Son Robert Tolman also worked as an electrician, and daughter Ruth was a stenographer in a rubber company.
The 1915 New York state census shows the family at 15 Cliff Avenue in Yonkers and John was now a public school teacher. The two Tolman children were still living with them. As their Cross daughters were age 8 and 16 it's likely that the unknown child who died was born between those two.
In 1920 they were still in Yonkers, living on Cornell Ave., and only their daughter Ruth was no longer living with them. John worked as an instructor in an electric company and daughter Dorothy was a clerk in a publishing company. |

Widely recognized by his peers, he held visiting professorships at Columbia University and Colby College; in 1953-1956, he was Director of the Editorial Center of the United States Bibliography, and a member of the Fulbright Screening Committee on Philosophy (1957-1959).
