| Birth* | Sarah Helen Larrabee was born on 10 July 1884 in Melrose, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.1 |
| Marriage* | She married William Judson Appel, son of William Appel and Margaret Arend, on 18 September 1913 at Sarah's parents' home at 106 West Foster Street in Melrose, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.2 |
| In Dec of 1906 there is a newspaper announcement of her engagement to Chester Jay Underhill of Liberty, Missouri, but no record of the marriage has been found, and the record of her 1913 marriage to William Appel says it was her first marriage. Apparently the engagement was broken off as in June 1912 Chester Underhill, then of Melrose Highlands, married Daisy Childs in Liberty, Missouri.
Their marriage announcement appeared in the Boston Evening Transcript on 19 Sep 1913 and read as follows: BEST MAN CAME FROM AFAR — Congo Free State Represented in Bridal Party at Wedding of Miss Sarah Helen Larrabee and William Judson Appel. Miss Sarah Helen Larrabee, only daughter of former Mayor and Mrs. John Larrabee of Melrose and William Judson, son of Rev. and Mrs. William Appel of Madison, N. J., were married at the home of the bride’s father, 106 West Foster street, Melrose, last evening. Rev. Augustus Erving Scoville, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Melrose, performed the ceremony. Mrs. William Edmund Craigie of North Reading was matron of honor and Walter E. Rodgers of the Congo Free State was best man. The ushers were John Heber Larrabee of Washington, D. C., and Harold Atkins Larrabee, brothers of the bride; William Edmund Craigie of North Reading, Clifford O. Smith and L. Vernon Hall, both of Somerville. Nearly two hundred relatives and friends attended the reception. After a wedding trip, the bridal couple will live in Madison, N. J. The bride is a graduate of the Massachusetts Normal Art School, New England Baptist Hospital and the Gordon Training School. Mr. Appel also is a graduate of the Gordon Training School, where he first met Miss Larrabee. He is secretary of the Y. M. C. A. in Madison, N. J.
When their son William Jr. was born in Boston in Sep 1914 the birth record stated that his parents were residents of Madison, N.J.
In March 1916 they were living in Fall River, Mass. when they applied for a passport to travel overseas, first to England, and then to Africa for missionary work. They had become members of the Sudan Interior Mission (SIM), one of the most aggressive and expansion-oriented Protestant missions operating in West Africa in the early 20th century. That year they were posted to the Mission's Sanitorium on the Jos Plateau in northern Nigeria. Later census records indicate that their daughter Esther was born in Africa while they were there. The couple did interant preaching among the indigenous population and made their first convert whom they referred to by his Hausa name Dan Borno. Dan Borno helped them in translation work. They missionary spoke in Hausa while he translated their speech into Irigwe when they preached to the local population. He also helped them with the translations of Bible portions into the local language. Eventually his time in this area took a toll on William's health - which happened to many missionaries in this undeveloped area - so he went on a furlough in 1919, from which he did not return again to the Jos Plateau. Sarah was involved in the work as well. Women worked mostly as teachers, nurses and language translators.
The family arrived back in New York on 10 Jun 1919 on board the S.S. Adriatic sailing from Liverpool, England. The next month the Boston Globe published a long article about their three years in Africa that began: Former Mayor John Larrabee of Melrose has as visitors at his home just now his daughter, Mrs. William Judson Appel, her husband and two children, who have just arrived from Nigeria, 800 miles inland from the coast of Africa where, for three years, the family have lived in the midst of various tribes of natives. The little girl of the family, six months old, was born in Africa and this is her first visit to a civilized land. The Appels have been in charge of a sanitarium or rest house for the Sudan Interior Mission, which started work in the interior of Africa 25 years ago. The country was then closed to white men, but the missionaries worked in from the port of Lagos, with Kano as the objective point in the interior. Kano is now the terminus of the British railroad, which runs from the coast port. Ten years ago the missionaries established the rest house at Miango for the use of their missionaries who became sick or otherwise incapacitated from work or who needed a vacation from living in the native villages and compounds. The compound lived in by the Appel family for three years is on a plateau 400 feet above the surrounding country and 40 or 50 miles in diameter. Mr. and Mrs. Appel have a son, 5 years old, who speaks the language of the natives and can rattle off jargon that nobody but his father and mother can understand. None of the natives speak English, so the missionaries have to learn their language. The language usually spoken is the Hausa tongue. The article went on to describe the lives of the natives in some detail, included photos of the couple and their children as well as two shots in the native village. A link to the full article is in the footnotes. It concluded: Mr. and Mrs. Appel are to go back to the African station if Mr. Appel’s health improves. He has a heart trouble which forced him to give up the work for a time, at least. They did not end up going back.
The 1920 census found William and Sarah and their first two children living in Marshallton, Delaware where both of them were teachers at the Ferris Industrial School of Delaware and living on campus. The school was a state-run reform and industrial training institution for delinquent and dependent boys, operated by Delaware in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Located on a large rural campus west of Wilmington, it emphasized manual labor, vocational skills, and discipline as a means of rehabilitation and social reform.
In 1930 the family was living at 2115 Bryant Avenue North in Minneapolis, Minn. where William's occupation stated he was a minister of a German Baptist church.
The 1940 census states that in 1935 they were living in Milwaukee, Wisc., but in 1940 they were living in at 455 Central Ave, Block A in Brooklyn, NY. William was a minister in a church at that time.
When William filled out his World War II draft application in Apr 1942 they were living at 455 Evergreen Avenue in Brooklyn, which was the address of the Second German Baptist Church. He was descdribed as being 5' 9" tall with blue eyes, gray hair and a ruddy complexion. His son Samuel filled out the form in Jun 1946 and gave his father's address as his next of kin, and it was the same address in Brooklyn.3,4,5,6,7,8,9 |
