Alexander Harrold

This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Alexander Harrold was probably born circa 1806 on the island of Gairsay, Rendall, Orkney, ScotlandG. He was aged 48 when his father died in January 1855. |
Marriage* | He married Mary Harrold on 31 December 1844 in the parish of Evie & Rendall, Orkney, ScotlandG.1 |
Death* | Alexander died on 28 September 1866 on Catherine Place in Kirkwall, Orkney, ScotlandG. The cause of death was stated as "organic disease of aesophagus".2 |
| When the 1841 census was taken there was an Alexander Harrold, aged 30-34, living with a Spence family as an agricultural laborer in the parish of St. Andrews, Orkney. (Census, St. Andrews, 1:2) In 1851 there was an Alexander Harrold living on Catherine Place in Kirkwall, aged 42 and born on Gairsay. (Census, Kirkwall, 8:19) This is likely "our" Alexander. He was married with three children and worked as a baker. His wife's name was Mary and first child born about 1845, so the marriage record in the parish of Evie & Rendall for December 31, 1844 is probably theirs. On that marriage record he is said to be from Gairsay and his wife, whose maiden name was also Harrold, was from another island. The name of that island was illegible but began with W so may have been the nearby island of Wyre. It could also have been Westray. Both the 1851 and the 1871 censuses state that she was born in Gairsay, however. It has not been possible as yet to determine her parentage or possible blood relationship to her husband. Their first two children were born on Gairsay around 1845-47, and they had moved to Kirkwall by the time their third child was born about 1849. The family has not yet been located in the 1861 census of the Orkneys, perhaps because some of the 1861 census may be missing, but in 1871 the widow Mary and three of their children were living at 22 Catherine Place in Kirkwall (7:11). It says that their last three children were born in St. Ola, a part of Kirkwall. Living with them was a Margaret Harrold, 19, a seamstress born in Rousay, no relationship given. She may be the daughter of Alexander's first cousin James Harrold and his wife Isabella Gibson. In 1881 (8:10) Mary and two children were still at the same address in Kirkwall, which was a neighborhood populated with Harrolds from several different families, many of whom are not closely related if at all. They were still there in 1891 (8:8), again with other Harrold relatives, some close and some distant. Alexander was deceased by this time and his widow Mary was listed as a housekeeper. |

Death* | John died. |
Birth* | He was born on 6 December 1846 in Kirkwall, Orkney, ScotlandG. (IGI.) |
Marriage* | He married Mary (?) circa 1879, probably in Kirkwall, Orkney, ScotlandG. That is where they were living two years later when the census was taken.1 |
| He is probably the John Harrold, age 24, born in Gairsay, who in the 1871 census of Kirkwall (Kirkwall, 2nd section, outside the city, 2:5) was living with an Iverach family and working for them as a farm servant. In 1881 it is probably this John living at 22 Catherine Place in Kirkwall (8:10) with his wife Mary and son Alexander. His mother and two siblings were living in the same house so it is assumed that this is him, although proof is lacking at present. In 1891 he is still there, this time in the same household as his mother, and is a widower, so his wife must have died in the interim. The Scottish Death indexes have a Mary Peace Harrold who died in Kirkwall in 1888, aged 38, so this may be her. Whether Peace was her maiden or middle name is unknown at present. Also listed in the household in the 1891 census were three grand-children of Mary Harrold, John's mother, who may be John's children. They were William, 7, Elizabeth A., 5, and John, 3, all born in Kirkwall. It is also possible that they are the children of one of John's brothers, or even his unmarried sister Ann. |

| There was a John Harrold, aged 17, born in Rousay, working as a farm servant for the family of James and Mary Sinclair of Newhouse in Rousay at the time of the 1871 census. (Rousay, 3:2) Before he married Isabella he fathered an illegitimate son by Jean Johnston, a sister of his brother-in-law Charles.1 This child was living with his grandparents John and Elizabeth (Reid) Johnson in Rousay in 1871. (Census 3:9) Jean Johnston was born 6 May 1851. She had a second illegitimate child, Elizabeth Reid, born 26 June 1877 before her eventual marriage to John Mowat of Pretty, in Sourin, Rousay.2 In the 1891 census of Rousay (3:15) John was a stonemason living at Bellona Cottage. |

| He was probably the James Harrold, aged 19, born in Rendall, who was living in the home of James and Margaret Arthur at 23 Catherine Place in Kirkwall in 1881 (Census, 8:11). Margaret was his first cousin. He was listed as a boarder in the census. He was also probably the James Harold, aged 24, who arrived in Boston, Massachusetts on board the ship "Prussian" on 10 May 1887. The occupation of this James was "grocer", which is the same occupation our James had in Scotland according to his obituary. The James on the passenger list was born and resided in Scotland. (Passenger List at Mass. Archives) The age doesn't match exactly (ours would have been 25 or 26 at the time, but it seems likely. Another James arrived in Boston a year earlier, but his occupation was "ironworker". His obituary gives much biographical information, and reads as follows: "The sudden death last week Thursday of James St. Clair Harrold, one of the most skillful architects in this vicinity, has brought sorrow to a large number of friends and admirers. He had been visiting a friend, James Learmouth, of Medford, the evening before, and was apparently in the best of health and spirits, so much so that his friends remarked upon how jovial he seemed. He returned to his home at 460 Broadway about 10 o'clock. At 11 o'clock his brother heard him in the bathroom taking a bath, and that was the last that was known of him alive. He soon afterward retired, and was found dead in his bed the next morning when his little boy came to arouse him. "Mr. Harrold had suffered considerably from rheumatism the past winter, and it is thought that death was due to rheumatism of the heart. Dr. Follett and Dr. Durell viewed the body. "Mr. Harrold was born in the Orkney Islands in 1861, and came to this country fifteen years ago. For eleven years he had lived in Somerville. In the old country he worked at the grocery trade, although he showed considerable proficiency as an artist with the brush and pen. After coming to this country he studied architecture, and rapidly rose in his profession. Many of the finest new houses on Winter and Spring hills were designed by him, notably several on Benton and Westwood roads. "He was a genial person, and an earnest worker, and had made a large number of warm friends. He was a Mason, a member of the Central club, the Scots Charitable society, and the Broadway Congregational church, and vice-president of the Orkney and Shetland society of Boston, all of which organizations were represented by delegations and sent flowers to his funeral. "The services were held at the house Sunday afternoon, Rev. H. H. Leavitt officiating. The burial was at Woodlawn. "Mr. Harrold leaves four small children, two boys and two girls, the oldest ten and the youngest nearly five years of age. His wife died four years ago this month. The youngest child is staying with an aunt in Chicago, the others have been living with their father in Somerville. A brother, William R. Harrold, also lived with him." (This obituary comes from an undated clipping that appears to be from the Somerville Journal)
When James and Mary were married in 1889 they were both living in Boston and James was employed as a draughtsman. The 1890 Boston city directory shows James as a draughtsman with an office in Boston but living in Somerville. By the time their first child was born in June 1891 they were living at 300 Lowell St. in Somerville, and James was still a draughtsman. Everything was the same in the 1892 Somerville city directory. When their daughter Hilda came along in July 1893 James was now an architect and they were living at 37 Vernon St. in Somerville, where they still resided a year later when their third child was born. When their fourth and final child was born in May 1896 they were living at 4 Jenny Lind Ave. in Somerville, and were still there when Mary died in March of the following year. By the time James himself died in 1901 he had moved to 460 Broadway in Somerville.
An undated [probably June 1896] and unsourced clipping has the following interesting information: "Singular Coincidence in Birthdays Mr. and Mrs. J. St. Clair Harrold, of Jenny Lind avenue, have been receiving congratulations the past ten days on the arrival of a daughter into their family. They now have four children, boys and girls alternating. Singularly enough, the boys, who are the first and third in age, were both born on June 29, while the girls selected as their birthday July 4 and May 24, the queen's birthday. The girls are bound to be patriotic, and to share in the holidays of the two greatest nations."
After this auspicious beginning for the young family things went downhill quickly. The mother died the following year, and the young daughter Adelaide was sent to live with an aunt in Chicago at some point. The three older kids remained with their father until his death, then returned to Orkney to live with relatives there. An undated photograph, which from the ages of the children appears to have been taken about 1906, shows Rognvald, Hilda and David with two adults. The back of the picture calls them "Aunt Maggie" and "Uncle John Harrold". His father's brother John Harrold died in 1889, so can't be him. The address on the back of the photo is 22 Bridge St. in Kirkwall. |
