| Notice from the London Gazette of 11 Oct 1869: NOTICE is hereby given, that the Copartnership carried on for some time past by Joseph Aarons and Michael Morris, at the Black Lion, Middlesex-street, Whitechapel, was this day dissolved by mutual consent. The said Joseph Aarons is empowered to discharge and receive all debts due by and owing to the said copartnership.
A letter to the editor of the Jewish Chronicle diiscuses Joseph's boxing father Barney then concludes: " Mr. Joseph Aaron has done better for himself in material results; he has applied his father's energy and directness to other affairs of life, and is now very comfortably off indeed. He retired from business some years ago. A grandson, named after him, is a member of the Common Council of the City Corporation."
Joseph was Treasurer of the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee, which was an important part of the hunt for Jack the Ripper in 1888. The Committee was formed by respectable businessmen of the district, and held their nightly meetings at the Crown pub which Joseph ran. It was located at 74 Mile End Road (at the corner of Jubilee Street). Details of his role in particular can be found on a Jack the Ripper website here (as of the end of 2025): . Another page on the site calls Joseph the "prime mover" in the formation of the Committee, which consisted of sixteen founding members, all East End businessmen and tradesmen. There is an interesting short Reddit thread discussing the possibility of Joseph himself actually being Jack the Ripper, although the consensus opinion seems to feel that it was unlikely.
He had taken over ownership of the Crosn pub in 1882 and ran it until 1889, perhaps giving it up due to the adverse notoriety of the neighborhood due to Jack the Ripper. In 1891 he returned to the trade as the landlord of The Horns at 53 Middlesex Street.6,7 |
