On Wednesday, (May 6, 2009), Maureen (Busheme) McKenzie, 64, of Charlotte, NC and her husband, Daniel McKenzie, died unexpectedly as a result of an automobile accident in York County, SC. Maureen was born on November 15, 1944 and raised in New Britain. Because of her love for people, Maureen began her career in the 70's by taking care of people with special needs. She continued her giving and caring nature by not only being a dedicated cosmetologist and beautician at the Hospital for Special Needs, but was also a hardworking real estate agent for Century 21. In 2001, Maureen and her beloved husband of 28 years, Daniel McKenzie, moved to Charlotte, NC where she opened her own business and continued working for many area hospitals as a cosmetologist and beautician. Her passion for taking care of elderly people and people with special needs would never end. Wherever she was, she quickly established bonds to help families and loved ones cope with their illness by being a friend and dedicated professional. An avid sports fan, Maureen loved the Boston Red Sox and Carolina Panthers. She enjoyed making new friends at each and every Bingo event. Maureen loved music and dancing and had the opportunity to see her American Idol, David Archuleta, perform on stage, which gave her video-taped version a break. As the oldest child of three, her loving, caring and protecting nature was not only graced upon her sisters and family, but on each friendship she made. Maureen leaves behind her two daughters, Cheryl Colson and her husband Rod Colson of Colchester, Tracy Pentalow and her son, Dylan Pentalow; Dan and Maureen's only grandson, of Southington; her two sisters, Terry Busheme and her partner, Alice McKelvey of Glastonbury, Joanne Bates and her husband Peter Bates and their daughter, Sarah, Dan and Maureen's Godchild, of Southington; her maternal uncle, Paul Vasile and his wife, Cookie and family. Several cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as their beloved pet Chihuahuas - Maggie and Molly. Maureen was predeceased by her parents, Tina and Joe Busheme. Maureen will be forever loved by her heart-broken family and dearly missed by all.1 |

John Aaron
M, b. circa 1825, d. April 1893
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | John Aaron was born circa 1825 in St. Botolph's Aldgate, London, EnglandG. He was 16 in the 1841 census, 25 in 1851 and 36 in 1861. The 1871 census, in which he was 46, gave his place of birth as "Gravel Lane City," which is a part of the St. Botolph's parish. His name at birth was Jacob, named after his grandfather, but he went by John. |
Marriage* | He married Abigail Jacobs, daughter of Samuel Jacobs, on 16 June 1852 at the Hambro Synagogue in East London, EnglandG.1,2 |
Death* | John Aaron may have died in April 1893 in Whitechapel, London, EnglandG. There is a John Aarons listed in the index for English deaths for the months of April, May and June 1893. This John was aged 68 and died in Whitechapel, which is of the correct age and general location for our John. He was buried in West Ham on 20 Apr 1893.3 |
| Our first record of John is the 1841 census of London, Borough of Tower Hamlets, Parish of Christ Church Spitalfields, where he is a 16-year-old cigar maker living with his parents on Cobb's Yard. Ten years later the address is given as 1 Cobb's Yard, and 25-year-old John is still living with his parents and is still a cigar maker. It lists his birth place as St. Botolph's, Aldgate. His parents and many of his younger siblings have the same place of birth listed until his ten year old brother Joseph is listed as being born in Christ Church. So apparently he lived in St. Botolph's until just before the time the 1841 census was taken, when they moved to the Cobb's Yard location.
He was living at 3 Providence Place in Aldgate in Oct 1856 when he applied for his Freedom of the City Admission Papers, at which time he was a cigar maker on Green Street, Quick Folly, Victoria Park. Ancestry.com, London, England, Freedom of the City Admission Papers, 1681-1930, ] They were still at that address there in the 1861 census, and John was still a cigar maker. The census reads "St. Botolph without Aldgate," which is apparently the full name of the parish. His children all had Aldgate listed as their place of birth as well so apparently he had been living there for at least eight years.
In 1871 John was a 'licensed victualer' living with his wife and only three children now (Amelia is no longer there) in the parish of Bishopsgate in London at 14 Widegate Street. That address was known as the Hoop & Grapes pub in those days. In 1881 John worked as a 'publican' at the George & Dragon pub at 104 Houndsditch in the St. Botolph parish of Bishopsgate of London. He was a widower living with three sons - Samuel, Abi and Ben. Samuel was a barman. In 1891 he was living at 198 Wentworth Street in St. Michael, Whitechapel, a widowed general dealer, with son Samuel. He was buried in the West Ham Jewish Cemetery on 20 April 1893. |

Barnett Aarons
M, b. 27 February 1855, d. 18 September 1926
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Barnett Aarons was born on 27 February 1855 in St. Botolph's Aldgate, London, EnglandG.1 |
Marriage* | He married Julia Emanuel, daughter of Philip Emanuel and Abigail Simmonds, on 13 February 1877 in the Chambers of the New Synagogue in London City, EnglandG. Barnett was born in the same road as Julia and her nine siblings, so it is likely that they knew each other as children.2,3 |
Death* | Barnett Aarons died on 18 September 1926 at home, 49 Cazenove Road in Stoke Newington, London, EnglandG.4,5 |
| In early census records when he was a child living with his parents the family surname was spelled Aaron, but by the time he married and in later censuses it was spelled with an s as Aarons.
When they married Barnett was a 'General Dealer' living at 104 Houndsditch and Julia was living with her parents at 4 Angel Court in London.
The 1881 census has the family at 9 Bell Lane in Spitalfields, London and Barnett was still employed as a 'general dealer.' Ten years later they were at the same address and he was listed as a clothier.
By 1893 London land tax records show Barnett in residence at 45a and 46 Houndsditch which was the 'Sir John Falstaff' pub which he was running with his wife Julia. He took over the running of this pub in 1892-3 from a man named Jack Billinghurst and continued to run it until his death aged 71 in 1926.
He was "slightly injured" in the Slough Railway accident in June 1900. His brother Abraham was also injured.
In 1897 he was elected to the Common Council for the City of London, representing the Ward of Portsoken. He was re-elected in 1904.
He and Julia were living in St. Botolph's, London in the 1911 census with their 14-year-old grandson Barnett Cooper. The older Barnett worked as a licensed victualler. They were said to be the parents of only one child.
In 1919 he was appointed treasurer for fund established to provide relief for the widows of those murdered in the Houndsditch murders in Dec 1910.
When he died he left an estate of over £10,000 which was a very large amount in those days.
Barnett and Julia had just the one daughter, but they also had an adopted daughter named Esther Simmonds. who was the daughter of Julia's uncle, her mother Abigail's brother, Isaac Simmonds. Isaac was 46 when he married 33 year old Betsey Isaacs in 1875. They had Esther in 1879 and Betsey likely died in 1881 just six months after the census was taken. We can presume that as Isaac was a 52 year old widower he felt that his two year old daughter Esther would be better looked after by his niece Julia and her husband, especially as they had one daughter, Phoebe only a year older. Isaac died 15 years later, in 1896, when Esther was just 17. Esther later married John Lelyveld who was a son of Asher and Jane Lelyveld. Before she married, Jane Lelyveld was Jane Simmonds, the oldest daughter of John Simmonds, the younger brother of Isaac Simmonds, Esther's father. This means that Esther married a son of her first cousin.6,7,8,9,10 |

| Phoebe Aaron Cooper family ca 1910 |
Birth* | Phoebe Aarons was born on 16 May 1877 in Mile End, London, EnglandG.1,2,3,4,5 |
Marriage* | She married Mark Cooper, son of Lewis Cooper and Sarah (?), on 19 February 1896 at the New Synagogue in London, EnglandG. At the time of their marriage Mark was living at 25 Sandingham Road in Dalston, Hackney, London.6,7 |
Death* | Phoebe Aarons died on 12 August 1956 at 87 Preston Road in Wembley, Middlesex, EnglandG.8,9 |
| She lived at 3 White Street in St. Botolph in 1881. When they were married in Feb 1896 Phoebe lived with her parents at the Sir John Falstaff pub in London and Mark lived at 33 Harrow Alley in London City. When the 1901 census was taken Mark and Phoebe were living at 93 Tower Hill in St. Botolph, Aldgate, London with two children and two 16-year-old servants, one a domestic named Louisa Pooley and the other a nurse named Agnes Baker. Mark's occupation was listed as "Ladies Costumier" and he was said to be an employer so presumably he owned the business.
When the 1911 census was taken they were living at 47 Cazenove Road, Stamford Hill, St. John-at-Hackney, London with three children and again, two servants. The domestic servant was 29-year-old Margaret Butters and the nurse was 25-year-old Rebecca King. He was apparently in the same business, listed as a "Wholesale Costumier."
If the birth places of their children in these censuses indicate their places of residence, then around 1897 they were in Hackney, in 1900 they lived in Minories, and then by 1907 were in Stamford Hill.
They were buried in Willesden Cemetery in Willesden, London.10,11,9 |
| Her death notice appeared in the 14 August 1956 Daily Telegraph of London and read as follows:
COOPER. -- On Aug. 12, suddenly, PHOEBE (née Aarons), widow of Mark. devoted mother of Barney, Bobby, Lily (Robinson), Julia (Rees), Doris (Ansell). Interment Willesden Cemeterv (Pound Lane) on Tuesday, Aug. at 4 p.m. Prayers same evening only, at 87. Preston Road, Wembley, at 8 p.m.12 |
