Birth* | Louis Aarons was born on 8 August 1828 in St. Botolph's Aldgate, London, EnglandG.1,2 |
Marriage* | He married Rachel Sitters, daughter of Levie Manus Sitters and Ester Salomon Knipschaar, on 25 June 1859 in New York, New YorkG.3 |

| Lewis was living with his parents in London when the 1841 and 1851 censuses were taken. His occupation in both was "cigar maker."
He is probably the Lewis Aaron, age 20, who arrived in New York from England on board the ship Henrik Hudson on 2 Oct 1854 with 40-year-old Barney Aaron and 25-year-old Solomon Aaron, likely his father and brother. Later newspaper accounts state that the older Barney visited the U.S. briefly in 1853 so they may have been off by one year. The ages in the ship's passenger list are all off but that isn't unusual.
He was listed in the 1855 New York State Census as a boarder living with a Simmons family in Ward 10 of New York City. He was a 28-year-old cigar maker who had only been in the city for one year, and was not a U.S. citizen.
By 1860 he and his new wife Rachel were living in New York City in the 2nd District of the 7th Ward. He was still a cigar maker, and had been married within the year. Based on the birth places of their children they remained in New York until at least 1867, although they haven't been located in the 1865 NY state census. They lived in New Haven, Connecticut for a short time, where they had their son Barnard in 1869.
By 1870 they had moved to Cambridge, Mass. and had four children. Lewis was still a cigar maker. He should not be confused with the Lewis Aaron of Cambridge who was the owner of the Aaron & Parker cigar manufacturers. That Lewis was also from London but a son of a John Aaron. There may be some relationship but if so it is unknown at present.
In 1872 their daughter Elizabeth was born at 1 Jones Block Colony in Boston, so apparently they had moved into the city by this time. When son Joseph was born two years later it was at 126 West Broadway in Boston. When Isabella was born in 1877 they were at 160 Dorchester Avenue, and remained there through the births of their next two children in 1880 and 1883. The 1880 census gives the address as 158 Dorchester Avenue, however. During this time period Lewis was either a cigar maker or a tobacco dealer.
When their daughters Bella and Bessie were married in Jun 1898 and Mar 1900, respectively, they gave their address as 148 Quincy Street in Boston, so apparently the family was living there then. By Jun of 1900, when the census was taken, Rachel (listed as "Mrs. Ray Aarons" was living at 58 Ceylon Street in Boston with her 19-year-old daughter Martha in the household of her daughter Rose Alpern and her husband Barney Alpern and their daughter Josephine. The Alperns had been living with them on Quincy Street when their daughter Josephine was born in Sep 1897. Rachel was said to have come to this country in 1852, and was the mother of eleven children, eight of whom were then alive. No occupation was listed for her. Lewis is not enumerated with the family and a global search of the 1900 census on HeritageQuest.com for Lewis (or Louis or Lew or Lou) Aaron or Aarons came up empty. Their daughter Sarah/Sadie is unaccounted for as well. They may have been back in New York City, because in 1903, Martha, and in 1906, Sarah, were married there.
When the 1910 census was taken Lewis was back in Boston. He and Rachel were living at 8 Wyoming Street in Boston in the household of their daughter Esther and her husband Elias Clark. Esther's two surviving Abram children were living with them, as were Barney Aaron and his daughter Ruth. Lewis was 79 and Rachel 68 and were apparently retired, as no occupation was given for either. Rachel was said to have come to this country in 1855, but Barney's year of immigration was said to be 1830, which must be an error. It said he was a naturalized citizen.
When Rachel died they were living at 8 Wyoming Street in Boston. Contributory causes to her death were listed as chronic endocarditis and a sub-clavicular dislocation of her right shoulder. When Lewis died in Jan 1912 they were still living at 8 Wyoming Street
His name is spelled as both Aaron and Aarons in the records, although the latter seems to be the most prevalent so it is used here. Many of his siblings seemed to have added the 's' around the 1870s as well.
Because the 1900 census said Rachel was the mother of eleven children, eight of whom were then living, it appears that one is missing who died young. That birth and death doesn't appear in the Massachusetts vital records indexes so likely happened in either New York or Connecticut. |

He was 14 in the 1841 census, 25 in 1851, 29 in 1860, 39 in 1870, 49 in 1880 and 79 in 1910. His gravestone gives a date of 8 Aug 1831 so if the New Synagogue record was transcribed correctly he lost three years off his age at some point during his life..

| The surname of her first husband has been spelled several ways in the early records - Abrahams, Abraham, Abrams and Abram. Abrahams is likely the original name, and shortened by 1884 to Abrams. When they were married in Jul 1881 they were living in Boston and he was a tailor. It was his second marriage. His occupation remained as a tailor over the following years while their children were born in Boston. When Annie was born in May 1882 they were living at 208 West Fourth Street. When the twins were born in Jul 1883 they were at 158 Dorchester Avenue, which is next door to where Esther's parents were living at the time. In Sep 1883 their twin infant sons died. Between when Joseph died on the 15th and when Louis died on the 24th their address changed to 160 Dorchester Avenue, which is the same as where Esther's parents had been two years earlier. It is unknown at present whether or not her parents were also living there at the same time. They were still there a year later, but but Jan 1888 they were at 17 Porter Street, and in Oct 1893 were at 244 Blue Hill Avenue.
The 1900 census finds the family living at 31 Dewey Street in South Boston. Annie was said to be the mother of seven children, but only four living (all four of whom were then living with them.) Abraham was said to have come to this country in 1865 and was a naturalized citizen. He was still a tailor. When Abraham died in Aug 1902 their address was 3 Glenbrook Street in Boston.
In Nov 1907 when she married her second husband Elias Clark she was living at 20 Stanwood Street in Boston. Elias was a salesman living at 70 Welles Avenue in Boston. When Esther's son Louis died in Jul 1908 he gave the 70 Welles Avenue address as his residence. In 1910 she and Elias were living at 8 Wyoming Street in Boston with her two surviving Abrams children, Eva and Joseph. Her mother and father and brother Barney (and his daughter) were living there with them. Elias worked as a salesman in a clothing store. He was said to be a naturalized citizen who came to this country from Germany in 1856. Esther was said to be the mother of seven children, only two of whom were currenty living.
Assuming the 1914 death record for Elias Clark is the correct one, they were living at 15 Wabeno Street in Roxbury at the time. In 1920 the widow Esther Clark was living at 179 Walnut Avenue in Roxbury, Mass. with eight boarders, including her brother Barney with his wife Rose. Her occupation states that she ran a lodging house.
When her third husband Henry Shumsky died in 1929 they were living at 3 Nazing Street in Dorchester. Henry's occupation was listed as "Merchant Hardware E. Shumsky." Local city directories show him as a hardware merchant at 625 Washington Street in Dorchester.
By 1930 she was living at 1406 Commonwealth Avenue in Boston. Living with her was her brother Barney, and her sister Phoebe Blum with her husband William. 68-year-old Esther had no occupation at the time.
In 1940 the roles were reversed and Esther was living in the home of her brother Barney at 1334 Commonwealth Avenue. Esther was now a 79-year-old widow. Barney's 46-year-old nephew Joseph Clark was living with them, and this may be Esther's son Joseph Abram who would be about that age. If so he evidently took his step-father's surname.
When she died in Mar 1960 she went by the last name of Shumway instead of Shumsky, and was living in Allston at 40 Chester Street. It said she had been in her place of death (her home) for 22 years, and 95 years in her place of residence, ie Boston. Both numbers are probably a bit off. |

| When she and William were married in Jan 1890 they were both living in Boston and he worked as a tailor - an occupation he held throughout all the records in which he is mentioned. When daughter Ray (Rachel) was born in Oct 1890 they were living at 9 Melrose Street in Boston. When their son Jack was born in Feb 1898 they were at 101 Quincy Street in Boston, and were still there when the 1900 census was taken. That census said that William emigrated to this country in 1886 and was a naturalized citizen. By the time the 1910 census was taken the family had moved to 79 Devon Street in Boston. William's year of emigration again said 1886, and Phoebe was said to be the mother of two children, both still living (and living with them.) They have not yet been located in the 1920 census, but in 1930 William and Phoebe were living at 1406 Commonwealth Avenue in Boston in the home of Phoebe's sister Esther Shumway. Also living there was their brother Barney Aaron. William's year of emigration was now 1885, and it said he was an invalid and had no occupation. Their children were not living with them. In 1940 William and Phoebe and their daughter Rachel were living at 829 Blue Hill Avenue in Boston, and it said this was the same place they were living in 1935. The census asks for the highest grade year of school completed, and for William it was 3d and Phoebe it was 4th. When William died in 1943 they were still on Blue Hill Avenue. His death certificate said he had been living in Boston for 55 years.
Phoebe's death notice read (in part): "grandmother of Norman Allen Blum, and two great-grandchildren." |

Rose was said to be the mother of only one child. Barney worked as a "Cust Tailor" and was a naturalized citizen who came to this country in 1886. Rose became ill with tuberculosis not long after the census taker came and suffered with it for five months before dying in the hospital on Christmas Day of 1900. Her occupation on her death certificate was 'tailoress' and her residence was 10 Dewey Street in Boston. |

| Barney's last name was spelled as both Aaron and Aarons in different places.
In the first two censuses as a child his name was Barnard, but after that he appears as Barney until 1940 when he is Bernard. On his death record he was again Barney. When he and Rose were married in 1869 he was a salesman and they were both living in Boston.
When their daughter Rose was born in Sep 1896 Barney's occupation was given as "drummer" and they were living at 24 Ingleside Street in Roxbury. They had a stillborn daughter in Boston on 23 Sep 1898. They were still at the Ingleside address when the 1900 census was taken, and living at the same address were David and Lillian Isaacs, presumably Rose's father and perhaps her mother "Lilian," although her mother's name in other records is Mildred/Millie. Barney's occupation at the time was "dry goods drummer," which is someone who is a commercial salesman who sells to retailers at the wholesale level. Rose was the mother of only one child.
Barney moved to Newport, Maine from Boston in 1904. The Bangor Daily News of 13 Oct 1904, p.8, has this notice in its Newport news section: "Mr. Barney Aaron, wife and daughter, who passed the summer at Hillside Farm, have returned from Boston to make their home here permanently with Mr. Libby's family at Hillside Farm. Mr. Aaron is a traveling man through this section of the country and desires to live here rather than his former place, Boston."
In the 1910 census Barney, a clothing salesman, was living with his elderly parents in the home of his sister Esther Clark at 8 Wyoming Street in Boston. With him was his daughter Ruth, but his wife Rose was not there. He was said to be married (for 14 years) and the parent of one child. Rose was back in the census with Barney in 1920 and they were living at 179 Walnut Avenue in Roxbury, Mass. as boarders (with six other boarders) once again in the home of his sister Esther Clark, who was now a widow. Barney worked as a travelling salesman selling stocks. Ten years later Barney was still living with his sister Esther (now Esther Shumway) at 1406 Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, and also living there were his sister Phoebe Blum with her husband William. Barney still worked as a stock salesman. In 1940 Barney was at 1334 Commonwealth Avenue and Esther was still with him, along with Barney's 46-year-old nephew Joseph Clark. This may be Esther's son Joseph Abram who would be about that age. If so he evidently took his step-father's surname. No occupation was given so presumably 70-year-old Barney was retired.
When Rose died in May 1948 her address was given as 170 Homestead Street in Boston. It said she had suffered from chronic cholecystitis (an inflammation of the gallbladder) for thirty years. When he died in Nov 1958 at the age of 89 his occupation was given as a greeting cards store-keeper and he was living at 40 Chester Street in Allston, Mass. Joseph B. Clark of Sharon, Mass. was the informant on the death record. The Netherland Society cemetery in which they were buried in Melrose is a Jewish cemetery. |

He was described as being tall with a medium build, and had brown eyes and black hair. When the 1920 census was taken they were still in Roxbury, but renting at 193 Townsend Street. Robert worked as the manager of a department store tailoring department. It said he had come to this country in 1890 and was naturalized in 1896.
When Bessie died in 1926 they were living at 4 Park Vale Avenue in Allston, Mass. Robert was still there in 1930, and it was a rental of apartment number 6. He worked as a manager in a department store. In 1935 Robert and daughter Rose were living in Brighton, and in the 1940 census were recorded in the household of his son-in-law Maurice Komins at 14 Alton Place in Brookline, Mass. Robert wasn't employed at the time.
When Robert died in 1962 he was living at 20 Buckminster Road in Brookline with his daughter Rose Abrahams. His occupation stated that he was a retired manager of a ladies wear alteration department. |

Birth* | Isabella Aarons was born on 27 March 1877 in Boston, Suffolk County, MassachusettsG. At 160 Dorchester Avenue.1 |
Marriage* | She married Jacob Samuel Hambro, son of Samuel Hambro and Emma Cornell, on 26 June 1898 in Boston, Suffolk County, MassachusettsG.2 |
Death* | Isabella Aarons died on 8 March 1936 in Manhattan, New YorkG.3 |
| When they were married in Jun 1898 Jacob was a drummer living at 107 Quincy Street in Boston and Bella was a bookkeeper living nearby at 148 Quincy Street. Rather than a musician he was probably a wholesale travelling salesman, who were called drummers in those days. When their son Sameul was born a year later they were living with Bella's parents at 148 Quincy Street in Boston and Jacob was a travelling salesman. In May of 1901 their daughter Rose was born in New York City, so the family may have moved down there for a short time. But by August of the following year they were back in Boston for the birth of their son Maurice at 86 Dacia Street. Jacob's occupation was listed as 'conductor' at this time. When Estelle was born in May 1905 they were at 31 Woodcliff Street in Boston and Jacob was a 'lather,' which is someone who makes or installs wooden lath strips in old-time walls. Their son Joseph was born at 643 Warren Street in Roxbury in July 1907 and Jacob was now a cigar maker. The family was likely living in Roxbury for much of their time in Boston, or perhaps Dorchester, but the Boston birth records, with the exception of the 1907 birth of Joseph, don't usually specify in what section of Boston it took place. The street addresses, however, were all in either Roxbury or Dorchester. |

| In the 1900 census 19-year-old Martha was living at 58 Ceylon Street in Boston in the household of her older sister Rose Alpern and husband Barney Alpern, along with their mother Rachel. Martha worked as a sales lady. Three years later she was married in New York City.
In 1910 Martha, Julius and their two children were living at 361 East 115th Street in Manhattan. Julius worked as a machinist in an automobile garage and was said to have come to this country in 1900. He was a Russian speaker born in Russia. Under his citizenship status it said "Pa," which means that he was then undergoing the process of becoming a naturalized citizen. Martha was said to be the mother of three children, only two of whom were living, so they probably had a child born in either 1904 or around 1905 who died young.
In 1915 the N.Y. City Directory, as well as the N.Y. State census, locate the family at 63 East 122nd Street in Manhatta. Julius was still a machinist, born in England and said to have been in this country for 15 years, yet still not a citizen. The only child living with them was 10-year-old Beatrice. The 1916 City Directory gave their address as 829 Jackson Avenue in Manhattan, and Julius was a machinist again. On 12 Sep 1918 Julius filled out his World War I draft registration card. He gave his address as 811 East 178th Street in the Bronx and was employed as a machinist with the Industrial Cup Co. in the Bronx. He was in the process of getting his citizenship and was presently a citizen of Russia. He was of medium height with a slender build, gray eyes and black hair. It stated his birth date as 12 Jun 1880.
In 1920 they were still living at 811 East 178th Street in the Bronx. Julius was a machinist in a factory and now his date of immigration was given as 1901. It still said his citizenship status was "Pa." And it also said that he was born in England of Yiddish-speaking Russian parents. They were still at the same address in the 1922 N.Y. City directory.
In the 1925 N.Y. State census they were at 1029 Bryant Avenue in the Bronx. Julius was now a naturalized citizen, having become so in Feb 1920. Again a machinist, he was born in England and in this country for 24 years. Living with them was their 8-year-old daughter Dorothy, as well as their 19-year-old daughter Beatrice Siegelbaum and her new husband Sol.
In 1930 the census finds the family (last name spelled Freman) at 1275 Grant Avenue in the Bronx. Julius was a machist of zippers and the Siegelbaums were living either with them or right next door again. They also had two boarders by the last name of something like Somerov. It was difficult to read.
When the 1940 census was taken the family - both Fraeman and Siegelbaum, were living at 1299 Grand Boulevard & Concourse in the Bronx. Julius was a machinist in a factory and had an 8th-grade education. Martha had two years of high school. They were said to have been living in the same house in April 1935, although the Siegelbaums were not in the same house (but still in the Bronx.)
On his Apr 1942 draft registration card during World War II, Julius and Martha were living at 150 Clarke Place in the Bronx. He was employed by DeLuxe Laboratory of 461 West 55th Street. No city was given but it was probably in Manhattan. His birth date was given as 12 Jun 1882, but the 2 in the year was written over another number that had been slightly crossed out, and his age, which here is 59, had a 5 that was written over a lightly-inked 6. Was it changed from 1880 and 61 for some reason?
When she died in May 1944 they were living at 150 Clarke Place in New York according to her death record, but it doesn't specify what part of New York. Julius was still living there when he died four years later. |

Barney Alpern
M, b. 23 December 1873
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Barney Alpern was born on 23 December 1873 in RussiaG. Some of his census records (1900, 1920, 1940) state that he was born in Poland. As the borders of the two countries changed frequently in those years it's likely that his birth place is within the modern-day area of Poland.1 |
Marriage* | He married Rose Aarons, daughter of Louis Aarons and Rachel Sitters, on 1 November 1896 in Boston, Suffolk County, MassachusettsG.2 |
Marriage* | Barney Alpern may have married second Emma Unger, daughter of Sam Unger and Fannie Waffenfeld, on 20 December 1903 in New York, New YorkG.3 |
| After Rose's death on Christmas Day of 1900 Barney apparently moved to New York City, as census records record a very likely Barney Alpern with daughter Josephine there for the next many years. This Barney first turns up in Manhattan in 1903 when he married Emma Unger. In the 1910 census of Manhattan Barney and Emma were living on Pleasant Avenue and were said to have been married for 14 years and had a 12-year-old daughter Josephine. Barney was a 36-year-old tailor born in Russia. Everything fits our Barney except for the length of time of the marriage, which, based on the 1903 marriage record, is clearly written to make it look like they were both the parents of Josephine. Josephine's place of birth was listed as New York when it should be Massachusetts. But in the next census of 1920 the family is found living at 4 Vernon Avenue in Brooklyn, NY and 22-year-old Josephine now is said to have been born in Massachusetts. 46-year-old Barney was still a tailor but this time it says he was born in Poland. It said he came to this country in 1888 and was naturalized in 1898. Josephine was employed as a stenographer.
In the 1925 New York State Census the three of them were at the same address and Barney's naturalization date was given as 1895 and it said it took place in New York. Barney was a tailor and Josephine was a stenographer. They were still at the same address five years later when the 1930 census was taken. Barney was once again said to have been born in Russia, and had his own tailor shop. His year of emigration was given as 1887 this time. Josephine, a stenographer in an accountant office, was listed as age 25 when it should have been around 32, and her place of birth was again given as New York. By 1940 Barney and Emma were living alone at 1065 Nelson Avenue in the Bronx. At age 67 he still had his own tailor shop, and was back to being born in Poland. Josephine was not with them in 1940, having been married in 1933. |
| Barney's second wife Emma Unger was the daughter of Sam Unger and Fannie Waffenfeld and (an unknown value.)3 |

Birth* | Ruth Aaron was born on 11 September 1896 at home, 24 Ingleside Street in Roxbury, Suffolk County, MassachusettsG.1,2 |
Marriage* | She married Maurice M. Potter, son of Gregor Potruch and Rivza Pelonsky, on 18 April 1918 in Brookline, Norfolk County, MassachusettsG. Their marriage ended in divorce at some point.3 |
Death* | Ruth Aaron died of a heart attack on 30 November 1971 at home, 8 Garrison Street in Boston, Suffolk County, MassachusettsG. Her remains were cremated at the Forest Hills Crematory in Boston on Dec. 3d.4 |
| On 29 Jan 1912, while Maurice was living at 8 Irvington Street in Boston, he was granted status as a naturalized American citizen.
When Ruth and Maurice were married in Apr 1918 he was an accountant still living at 8 Irvington Street in Boston and she was a stenographer living at 568 Blue Hill Avenue in Dorchester. Shortly after their marriage they moved to an apartment house at 299 Tappan Street in Brookline, Mass., which is where they were living in Sept of 1918 when Maurice filled out his World War I draft registration card. He was self-employed as a public accountant working at 10 State Street in Boston. He was described as being of medium height and build, and bald with brown eyes. The 1920 census found them with their infant daughter Marjorie still living at 299 Tappan Street. Maurice was working as an accountant in his own business, and is said to have come to this country in 1901. His birth place and that of his parents was listed as Vilna, Russia. Ten years later they were at the same address, and aside from having another daughter nothing had changed other than the fact that Maurice was said to have come to this country in 1895.
When the 1940 census was taken the four of them were living in Brookline at number 222, but the street was not listed on the census sheet. On the page before it was Newson Street and the page after it was again Tappan Street. To the question that asked where they lived in 1935 they replied 'same house.' Maurice was still an accountant in his own business.
When he filled out his World War II draft registration card in 1942 his address was given as the Statler Hotel at 10 State Street in Boston, which was also given as his place of employment as a self-employed C.P.A. On the form he had to list the name and address of a person who would always know his address, and that person was Mrs. Paul Hackel of 136 Pleasant Street in Brookline. Through other sources it has been discovered that her first name was Sonya. Her relationship to Maurice, if any, is unknown at present.
When Maurice died there was a brief notice in the Boston Globe of 20 Dec 1970, p.95 where it read: "In Boston, Dec. 19, Maurice Potter, of the Statler Hilton Hotel. Service private."
They were divorced at some point in their marriage, as Ruth's death certificate, which called her Mrs. Ruth Potter, stated that she was divorced. His death certificate a year earlier said the same thing. At that time Ruth was living at 8 Garrison St. in Boston. When Maurice died his occupation was given as a self-employed certified public accountant. No residence was listed but he died at the same hotel he was living at years earlier, so presumably was still living there. |
