  1. Parentage, place and approximate date of birth from his marriage certificate. The spelling of his father's first name and mother's maiden name seem suspicious and may be transcription errors from the original to the record at Mass. Vital Records. His age at death of 64 in May 1929 also suggesets 1865. On that record his father's name was given as William and the mother was left blank.

  1. Massachusetts Vital Records, Births, 1875, v.270, p.33, no.65. [For some reason his birth was recorded in the vital records of Branch County, Michigan. His parents were said to be residents of the town of Coldwater, yet the place of birth was given as Boston, Mass. Further confusing the issue is the fact that a squiggly line is drawn through his birth record, as if it were a mistake and needed to be removed from the record books.]

When Robert was born in the city of Mlawa, the formerly Polish city was under Russian ownership in the so-called Russian Partition of Poland, which lasted into the 20th century. On 14 May 1900 he and Bessie applied for a passport in Boston, and on that application he stated that he emigrated to this country, sailing on an American ship out of Liverpool, on 22 Jul 1890. After that he lived for 9 years in Boston, during which time he became a naturalized American citizen on 25 Sep 1896. The application described him as a 27-year-old tailor who was 5' 10 1/2" tall with a high forehead, brown eyes, a straight nose, medium mouth, round chins, dark brown hair, dark complexion and full face. He and Bessie were living at 50 Stanwood Street in Dorchester at the time.7

  1. The date comes from his World War I draft registration card, although his World War II card says 12 Jun 1882. Census records all point to 1880 as being the more accurate date, however. Almost all sources say he was born in England, although the 1910 census says it was Russia and the WWI card says his nationality was Russian. His death record gives a birth date of 12 May 1884, in England.
