Birth* | Solomon E. Aaron was born on 16 June 1870 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.1 |
Marriage* | He married Lillian M. Fidler, daughter of Charles B. Fidler and Mary A. Murray, on 26 October 1903 in Boston, Suffolk County, MassachusettsG.2 |

| At the time of their marriage Solomon and Lillian were living at 312 Bunker Hill Street in Charlestown, Mass. They were still at this address when their first child Arthur was born in Dec. 1904.
He was a fireman with the Boston Fire Department and kept that job until he retired between 1913 and 1916. In 1924 he gave his occupation as inventor.
When their young son Arthur died in Jun 1914 they were living at 93 Henley Street in Boston.
When Lillian died in Jul 1953 they were living at 92 Savin Hill Avenue in Dorchester, and her death record states that she had been living there for 9 years. Apparently Solomon moved shortly after his wife died because on his own death record in Jan of 1955 he was living at 198 Savin Hill Avenue and had been there for one year and six months. |
| His obituary appeared in the 1 February 1955 Boston Globe and read as follows:

Solomon Aaron
M, b. 8 October 1830, d. 23 February 1898

Death* | Solomon died of cerebral hemiphlegia on 23 February 1898 in Tewksbury, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.2 |

| In 1851 Solomon was a 21-year-old cigar maker living with his parents in London. There is no record of Solomon in England after the 1851 census, and it appears that he immigrated to New York City aboard the Henrik Hudson, arriving on 2 Oct 1854 along with Barney Aaron, age 40, and Lewis Aaron, age 20, who are probably his father and brother, despite the age discrepancies. The elder Barney had come to America late in 1854 according to newspaper reports for a tour and to put on some exhibitions. By August of 1859 Solomon and wife Mary had their daughter Phebe born in Connecticut. Several of Barney and Phoebe (Lee) Aaron's children named a daughter after their mother Phoebe, and Solomon was part of that tradition. The family was living in Suffield, Connecticut in the 1860 census, but by the time their daughter Emma was born in Jul 1862 they had moved to Cambridge, Mass., which is also where his brother Moss Aaron was living at the time. During this time period and for the remainder of his life he worked as a cigar maker.
Solomon was also a part-time pugilist like his brother and father. In an article on page 38 of the Chicago Chronicle for 29 Dec 1895, fighter Billy Edwards offers some reminiscences of his carrer and at one point it reads: "When I came to America in 1865, in my 21st year, I didn't look for sport, however; I went right to work in iron works. I soon began to fight, though. I first beat Sol Aaron, Barney's brother, and then Mickey Colburn, who was one of the best men living in 1865." [The same article appears in multiple newspapers at the time.] Billy Edwards said more about this in an interview published on 8 Sep 1874 in the National Republican of Washington, D.C. (p.4). When asked when he first fought in this country, Edwards said "It was at Sol Aaron's benefit, a brother of the celebrated Barney Aaron." What exactly "Sol Aaron's Benefit" was is unknown, but it happened more than once as evidenced by the notice titled "Sol Aaron's Benefit" from page two of the Boston Globe on 5 Jun 1880: "The attendance last evening at the Howard Athenaeum, to witness Sol Aaron's benefit, was all that could be desired by the beneficiary. In fact, 'twas more than so, as there were fully 500 present. The evening's entertainment was opened with a set-to between Sol Aaron and Johnny Walker, which was followed by Murphy and Desmond (the kids), Barney Aaron and Patsey Sheppard, Sam Blake and John Springer, John Aaron and S. Busnach, Patsey O'Hara and Loring. The evening's entertainment concluded with a grand wind-up between the beneficiary and Marcellus Baker. Among the sporting men present who were desirous of putting on the 'mittens' were J. Gallagher, who was matched to the box with Thomas Drohan, and John Sullivan (the Boston boy), who was to meet Rooke. Both men kept away, for reasons unknown." Apparently there was some dissatisfaction among the public after the event, perhaps because of Sullivan's non-appearance, because the next day a letter appeared on page five of the Globe from Sol himself: "To the Editor of the Globe: No doubt the public was disappointed with the entertainment furnished at my benefit last night, but I trust they will believe me when I say I will regret it more than they. Each and every man billed had promised me personally to appear, and having appeared myself for them almost without exception, I think I ought to expect the same in return. To those who did appear I return my sincere thanks, and should they require my services I will be happy to oblige them. And I trust the public will excuse what was in reality no fault of mine. Respectfully, Sol Aaron, Boston, June 5, 1880."
An article in a New York newspaper called "The World" published on 3 Sep 1872 talks of a fight that took place in Campobello, Maine on August 31st. It mentions that a "large party of sporting men" had come from all over to see the fight, and that "Among this party were Sol. Aaron (brother of Barney Aaron)" among other people.
The front page of the Boston Globe on 24 Dec 1878 had an article title "Christmas Sports" about a sparring exhibition that took place in Beethoven Hall. It says "The programme began with a glove contest between Sol and Barney Aaron., which was fully appreciated by the audience." Prize fighting in those days was often illegal, as evidenced by this 12 Feb 1869 article in the Baltimore Sun: "Sol Aaron, a well-known pugilist, is under arrest in Boston on an indictment for aiding in the late prize fight at Lynnfield, Mass." Searching for Sol Aaron in newspaper archives from the 1860s and 1870s brings up several other mentions of Sol. One from the New York Clipper of 9 Mar1867 is an advertisement for "Sparring Lessons given by Sol. Aaron (brother of the renowned Barney Aaron, of New York)," offered at the Mt. Vernon Building on Sudbury Street in Boston.
Also in Mar 1867, when their son Edwin/Edward was born, they were living in Boston, and Edwin was born at 383 Charles Street, which was likely their residence. When the 1870 census was taken they were living in East Cambridge. In the 25 Dec 1873 issue of the Boston Daily Globe, p.3, there is a story on a Super Criminal Court case regarding the seizure of some illegal liquors. A number of men were fined and sentenced, including Solomon Aaron who was fined $100 and sentenced to three months in the House of Correction. As there is no other known Solomon Aaron in Boston at this time it seems likely that this was our Solomon.
In 1880 they were living at 8 Laurel Street in Cambridge. In a 25 Apr 1891 issue off "Police News" comes this short clipping: "Sol Aaron, whom the old sporting men will remember as one of the cleverest exponents of the manly art, was seized with a fit as he was passing along Hanover street in Boston, Friday evening, April 17. He was taken to Station 1, and Dr. Elliott called to attend him. Sol has no home and will be turned over to the commissioners of public institutions. He is a brother of Barney Aaron, the well-known ex-champion feather-weight, now employed on the New York races to officially announce the judges' decisions to the bookmakers in the betting ring."
Why he was reportedly homeless in 1891 is unknown, and where was his wife at that time? When the 1900 census was taken two years after his death, the widow Mary was living with her son Solomon at 2 Fruit Street Place in Boston, and at 185 Appleton Street in Cambridge, Mass. when she died in 1902. |
