| After she died several of her relatives signed the online funeral home guest book and left comments and memories. Some of them are reproduced here:
From her son Bob Gardner: Louise Gardner became an integral part of the fabric of many lives; the most apparent of her qualities were her obvious delight in the uncomplicated love of children, her indiscriminate acceptance of the mistakes of adults, her keen and penetrating grasp of the most complicated of human circumstances, her intuitive insights into the most basic of human conditions; her easy sense of the power that beautiful women may exert in an insensitive world, her grasp of her role as the leader of the clan and her love of the creative process in so many and varied media. These basic but very profound qualities and concepts she understood and practiced extremely well. Obviously, Louise was many things to many people. To me she was an uncompromising fan, an insistent promoter of excellence, and a wonderful, loving mother.
From her nephew Fred Laskey: Remembering My Beautiful Aunt Louise. This is to celebrate a wonderful life and a wonderful period in my own life. I will miss you and we all will miss you. I will miss the long talks on the telephone over the past few years and especially the long talks throughout the various stages of my life. We talked about the family...always the family...the good times and the not so good times. We traded many philosophical thoughts. We both reminisced about my early days as a young kid...the times I would ride my J.C.Higgins up Main Street from Melrose Highlands through Wakefield, across on North Avenue and into Reading, showing up unannounced at your house on Elliot Street for a visit. You were always accommodating and gave me the red carpet treatment complete with cookies and milk. The little brown house seemed so large to me then and I loved to "hang out" in the yard. We talked about the times I would look forward to the many overnighters, when my mother, Gramp and I drove to Reading for supper and a movie. I remember going out in the early morning hours (it seemed early) with Bobby to hunt frogs with sling shots. Don't worry Coleen...never got one...it was all about the quest and the "bonding". I remember you playing the piano for me and constantly coaching me to keep up my lessons. Most recently I remember how quickly you welcomed Coleen into the family when she first arrived from Australia. You got her hooked immediately as a member of her favorite people club. Above all, you should be remembered as the family leader, first and foremost. Bill, Richard, Fred, Alethea and especially my mother always looked up to you as well as the next generation, the next and then the next who were to follow in their footsteps. In recent times you would call me and Coleen just to connect and chat. It broke my heart when you were all apologetic for calling unannounced. You, who has transcended all of our loves and generations with beauty and charm, should be the one who deserves the apologies...the one who has earned the right to be there, in an omnipresent way, for all of us. Goodbye Aunt Louise. God bless your life and what you mean to us.
From Fred's wife Colleen: Dearest Louise. Whenever I see the colors lavender and purple I know that it will be you checking in to say "hello, I love you".
From her nephew Paul Laskey: Aunt Louise was my favorite aunt and I will always treasure the memories of the train trips to Reading from Malden in the late forties. You made my day last October when you knew exactly who I was when we visited. At the door you said, " Paul is that you!" Just like mom, you hugged me and told me how much you missed me. My memories of our time together will remain with me always.
From her grandson Peter Gardner and his wife Fabi: To my grammy, thank you for all the cherished moments we've shared either playing cards, talking, dancing and making music. You taught me through grace and hilarity all about life and its enjoyments. I am glad you got to meet my bride and know that she enjoyed you too. You were my inspiration and you will be so missed. We love you (yoohoo),see you in heaven. From her niece Susan (Laskey) Seeley: My dearest Aunt.....the end of an era has come. I have so many wonderful memories of you.....from the many "overnights" at Eliot and West Streets, sitting on a blanket on the lawn playing with Betsy and neighborhood playmates....to the times I brought my children and grandchildren to see you. You were always so happy to see us. I remember all the stories you told...you had such a VIVID memory. You remembered what you had for lunch on a teenage date. I will love you and will miss you tremendously for ever and ever.5 |
