Birth*Timothy Francis Aaron was born in March 1853 at 26 Hanover St. in the Rotherhithe District, Surrey, EnglandG.1
Marriage*He married Barbara Volz circa 1875. The 1900 census states that they had been married for 25 years.2
Death*Timothy Francis Aaron died on 19 May 1929 in Jersey City, Hudson County, New JerseyG.3
Timothy Donovan came to America with his mother Margaret about 1855, a year or so after his father Cornelius, settling in New York City. Family tradition states that his father Cornelius either work with or co-owned a saloon with the pugilist Barney Aaron. Cornelius died a few years later and Barney supposedly married Cornelius' widow Margaret, after which Barney legally adopted Timothy. But census records show Timothy living with the some time pugilist John Aaron (with wife Anna), who was no relation to Barney despite the two of them sometimes claiming to be brothers, likely for publicity reasons. Whether Anna was Margaret using a different name or a completely different woman is unknown.

A 16-year old Timothy Francis Aaron is living with John and Anna Aaron in New York City in the June 1870 census. This Timothy was born in England and worked as a sign painter. John, no relationship given, was a 40-year old fruit dealer born in England and Anna, presumably his wife, was 34 and born in Ireland. This certainly sounds like our Timothy, but who are John and Anna Aaron? The census states no relationship but the three look like a family group of father, mother and son. Timothy was a sign painter later in life as well, further cementing the similarities.

The 1900 census of Jersey City, N.J. has Timothy, Barbara and their daughter Grace renting at 22 Lang Street. Timothy was employed as a sign painter and it said he was a naturalized citizen who arrived in this country in 1855. It said that Barbara was the mother of six children, only four of whom were then living.

The 1920 census of Jersey City, N.J. taken on January 12th also states that Timothy's parents were both born in Ireland. It gives his age as 65, which would place his year of birth as about 1854. The census stated that he came to America in 1856 and was naturalized in November 1876, having been born in England. His occupation was given as a sign painter, and he owned his own home at 22 Long St.45
