This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Esse Lee Clay was born on 28 September 1901 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.1 |
Marriage* | She married first John Harold Pigman, son of Harrison Kelley Pigman and Mildred D. Inlow, on 28 June 1920 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.2 |
Marriage* | She married second John Richard Newman, son of Delma A. Newman and Gina Tinker, circa 1955 in East Tawas, Iosco County, MichiganG. |
Death* | Esse Lee Clay died of heart disease on 9 February 1982 in Pontiac, Oakland County, MichiganG. |
| John Pigman was stationed at a sub base somewhere in New England during World War I, which is how he met Esse. When they were married in 1920 they were both living at 70 Austin Street in Cambridge. Esse was a stenographer and John was a salesman. The 1920 census doesn't record them at that address and they aren't found elsewhere so it might have missed them. When their son Raymond was born in 1923 they were living at 42 Guild Street in Medford, Mass. John was still a salesman but Esse was now a housewife.
They moved from Massachusetts and back to John's home state of Ohio in 1924, living in Athens until about 1927. They moved back east after that, living in Dedham, Mass. where the census found them in 1930 at 90 Needham Street. John worked as a salesman for what looks like the "Evergreen" company. Esse's mother Phoebe was living with them and their two children. In July 1935 they moved to Pontiac, Michigan and Phoebe Clay went with them and lived with them for the rest of her life. They lived in Pontiac until about 1950, then in Saginaw, Michigan until 1952, and from there to East Tawas, Michigan.
Esse's second husband Dick was corporate counsel for the city of East Tawas, Michigan. |

Donald Calvin Gillis
M, b. 18 December 1897, d. 16 July 1950
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Donald Calvin Gillis was born on 18 December 1897 in Boston, Suffolk County, MassachusettsG.1,2,3 |
Death* | Donald died on 16 July 1950, probably in Binghamton, Broome County, New YorkG.4,5 |
Burial* | He was buried in the Forrest Home Cemetery in Waverly, Tioga County, New YorkG.6 |
| Donald was likely an adopted member of the family. There is a record for him in Middlesex County Probate court cated 1899 on ancestry. Middlesex County, Massachusetts Probate Index, 1871-1909 (Part A-K), ]
When he filled out his World War I draft card in Sep 1918 Donald worked as a machinist helper with the Boston & Maine Railroad in Billerica, Mass. He was liviing with his parents at 11 Sheridan Avenue in Malden, Mass. at the time. He was described as being of medium high and stout built with brown hair and brown eyes.
When the 1920 census was taken on January 7th he was still living with his parents in Malden and employed as a chauffeur for a laundry. He hasn't been found in the 1930 census using the indexes at ancestry.com. He is probably the 42-year-old Donald Gillis born in Mass. listed in the 1940 census in New York City, living as a lodger at 417 West 115th Street. The census states that he was living in the same house in 1935. He worked as a salesman in a shoe store at the time.
He was living in Portland, Maine when his parents died in 1942 and 1943. The Portland city directory of 1943 cites a Donald C. Gillis, who resided at 70 Forest Avenue in Portland. He is listed only that year and then disappears from the directories. 70 Forest Avenue was at that time the address of the YMCA, Portland Junior College, and Portland University Extension Courses, Inc. He was probably either resident at the YMCA or a student at one of the colleges. No occupation was listed with his directory entry, and the following year's directory listed no widow.
His World War II draft registration card dated 14 Apr 1947 on the back seems to have three residences for him. The one printed in the address box is 826 South Wabash Avenue in Chicago, Ill. but this is crossed out and below it 379 South Chicago Avenue in Kankakee, Ill. is pencilled in. But then at the top of the card is yet another address in pencil with a date of 8/14/42 after it that is 70 Forest Avenue in Portland, Maine. This seems to indicate that after he left Portland he moved to the Chicago area. He was employed by Goldblatt Brothers of Chicago. He listed his closest relative as Miss Ruth Varney c/o D.W. Gillis, 311 Forest Street in Malden. The card described him as being 5' 7" tall weighing 179 pounds with brown hair, brown eyes, and a dark complexion. It also said he had a scar on the right side of his neck and another on the right side of his abdomen.
His mother's obituary in 1942 stated that she had a granddaughter while his father's obituary stated that it was a grandson, but Donald's own obituary mentioned no children. |
| His obituary appeared in the 17 July 1950 Press and Sun-Bulletin of Binghamton, N.Y. and read as follows:
DONALD C. GILLIS, 52, of 205 Robinson Street, died Sunday in Binghamton. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bertha Gillis, of Binghamton; several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was a member of the Eastern Light F&AM of Greene, the Parlor City Lodge 702 IOOF, Sunlight Rebekah Lodge 62, the Binghamton Encampment 25, and Binghamton Canton 21. The body was removed to the Frank L. DeMunn Funeral Home, 36 Conklin Avenue, where friends may call Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Parlor City Lodge 702, IOOF, will hold services at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.7 |

- Month and year of birth confirmed by the 1900 census. All census records for him give Massachusetts as his state of birth, but his birth record could not be located in the Mass. vital records indexes from 1882-1906. If he is adopted that would explain the absence.

William's occupation was listed as "bookkeeper - dry goods".4 The 1930 census was taken on April 8th at their Melrose home on 159 Melrose St. As opposed to 1920, when they rented, their abode this time was their own, valued at $6000 in the census. William worked as an office manager at the time.5 When Alethea died in 1947 they were still living at 159 Melrose St. in Melrose. William's death certificate in 1972 stated that he was an insurance broker and was still at 159 Melrose St. in Melrose. Harry James Montgomery
M, b. 29 October 1890, d. 25 May 1956
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Harry James Montgomery was born on 29 October 1890 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.1 |
Marriage* | He married Tenna Campbell, daughter of Angus Campbell and Ella O'Neill, on 10 January 1910 in Malden, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.2 |
Death* | Harry died of a coronary occlusion, on 25 May 1956, at the Sunset Cabins on Route 17, in Topsfield, Essex County, MassachusettsG, at age 65.3 |
Burial* | He was buried on 29 May 1956 in the Forestdale Cemetery in Malden, Middlesex County, MassachusettsG.3 |
| His name was Henry on his birth record, but he went by Harry later in life. When they married in 1910 he was a freight brakeman living in Malden, Mass. and Tenna was a clerk, also living in Malden. When the 1910 census was taken on April 30th Harry and Tenna were living with his mother at her boarding house on 532 Pleasant St. in Malden. He was employed as a clerk in a railroad office at the time.
When their son Charles was born in 1911 they were living in Malden and Harry was a milkman. The next year they were still living in Malden and he was a railroad conductor. In 1913 they were in North Billerica, Mass. and he was still employed by the railroad.
When the 1930 census was taken on April 14th, Harry and Tenna were living at 12 Boulder St. in Malden with Harry's mother and their three sons. They owned their home, worth $6000, and he ran a floral supply business. His three sons worked for him as well. Living just around the corner on Forest St. were Harry's aunt and uncle Daniel and Amelia (Schmelzer) Gillis and his cousin Ruth Varney.4
His death certificate stated that he was a self-employed wholesale florist, living at 305 Forest St. in Malden, and that he had been a resident of Malden for 60 years. His obituary in the Malden Evening News, May 28, 1956, p.12 states that he was a well known Forest Dale florist (Forest Dale being a section of Malden). His home and florist shop were both at 305 Forest St. It went on to say that he came to Malden as a small boy with his parents, living first in the Edgeworth section of town before moving to Forest Dale where he lived for nearly 40 years. He was a member of the First Congregational Church there. He attended the Emerson and Leonard schols and as a boy attended the Edgeworth chapel and Sunday school, which was, by the time he died, then St. Peters Chapel, but at the time he attended was a mission of the First Congregational Church.
His obituary went on to describe the circumstances of his death in some detail. He left home around noon to head up to Georgetown, Mass. to pick up some flowers but never arrived. Along the way, on Route 17 in Topsfield, Mass., he was feeling ill so pulled over at the Sunset Cabins to rest. He assured the proprietor that he just needed some rest but when he went to check on him two hours later the proprietor found him dead in his cabin.
When Tenna died in 1976 she was still living at 305 Forest St. and her occupation was also self-employed wholesale florist. Her obituary in the Malden Evening News, May 7, 1976, p.2, stated that she and her husband founded Montgomery Florists of Malden 55 years ago, or about 1921. Tenna was born and educated in Peabody but lived in Malden all her married life. After her husband's death in 1956 she ran the business until she retired in 1965, at which time their son Robert took it over. |
