Rose Rae Hambro
F, b. 3 May 1901, d. 31 December 1994
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Marriage* | Rose Rae Hambro may have married Julius Holzer.1 |
Birth* | Rose Rae Hambro was born on 3 May 1901 in New York, New YorkG.2,3 |
Marriage* | She married Alexander Shapiro, son of Isaac Shapiro and Celia Pardros, on 31 December 1923 in Boston, Suffolk County, MassachusettsG. She was listed as Divorced in the 1940 census.4 |
Death-SSDI* | Rose Rae Hambro died on 31 December 1994, and according to the Social Security Death index her last place of residence was Broward County, FloridaG.5,6 |
| When they were married in Dec 1923 Alexander was a salesman living at 50 Allston Street in Boston and Rose was a bookkeeper living at 1193 Commonwealth Avenue in Boston.
When their son Bertram was born in Mar 1925 they were living at 50 Brighton Avenue in Boston and Al worked as a real estate dealer.
Rose's tentative marriage to Julius Holzer comes from a tree on a website that could have made a mistake. In the 1940 census of Woodside, Queens, N.Y., Rose Hambro is a divorced woman living with her 15-year-old son Bertram Shapiro. Living with them as a lodgder is 53-year-old Julius Holzer. Going back to earlier censuses we find a Julius Holzer and wife Rose with the children assigned to Julius and our Rose by the family tree website that assumes they were married. But the rose married to Julius in the earlier censuses would have been born around 1890 according to her age in those censuses, and they were a couple as recently as 1930 when Rose would have had a 5-year-old Shapiro child. But it IS possible that they married after the 1940 census was taken, given that they were living in the same house in that year. |

Beatrice Fraeman
F, b. 1 July 1905, d. November 1982
This research is a work in progress, taken from sources of varying reliability. The information should be verified before being relied upon.
Birth* | Beatrice Fraeman was born on 1 July 1905 in New YorkG.1 |
Marriage* | She married Saul Siegelbaum on 19 November 1924 in Bronx, New YorkG.2 |
Death-SSDI* | Beatrice Fraeman died in November 1982, and according to the Social Security Death index her last place of residence was Bronx, New YorkG.3 |
| Beatrice first appears as a married woman in the 1925 N.Y. State census, living with her husband and her parents at 1029 Bryant Avenue in the Bronx. Sol worked as a chauffeur at the time. Five years later they were still with her parents, this time at 1275 Grant Avenue in the Bronx. Saul's occupation is illegible. In the 1940 census the Siegelbaums now have an 8-year-old daughter Faith and they are living with Beatrice's parents in an apartment house at 1299 Grand Boulevard and Concourse in the Bronx. Sol/Saul is now Simon and worked as a coal truck driver. He had an eighth grade education while Beatrice had two years of high school. When it asked where they were living in April 1935 it said they were in the Bronx, but not in the same house.
When Simon filled out his World War II draft card in Feb 1942 they were living at 150 Clarke Place in the Bronx and he worked for Premium Coal Co. in East River, N.Y. He was described as being 5'9" tall weighing 200 pounds with blue eyes, brown hair and a light complexion.
The 1950 census found the three of them living at 108 Marcy Place in the Bronx. Simon didn't have an occupation listed but it did say he was employed in an "Other" category. Beatrice worked as a salesperson in a retail department store.
Faith is the only child with them in the 1940 and 1950 censuses so if they had others they likely were born and died between the censuses. |

Death* | Evelyn Blume died on 8 July 1961 in New YorkG.3 |
| While she was born in New York City and lived there for the first eight years of her life, her family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana around 1909 or 1910, as they were enumerated there in the census in April, living at 769 West Michigan Street. Her youngest sibling was six months old and had been born in New York, so the move must have been recent. She had another sibling born there around 1910, then three years later a sibling born in New York so they probably went back to the city for a time. Around 1915 though, she had another sibling born in Massachusetts, which is where they were living, on Woodcliff Street in Boston, when the 1920 census was taken. |

| A Lifelong Student of Art. -- CORVALLIS — Since 1963, Herbert Berman has painted nearly every single day. Portraits, still lifes, landscapes, street scenes — the people and places of his life are recorded in bold oils. A native New Yorker, Berman has studied drawing and painting at The National Academy and the Art Students’ League in New York City, where he is a life member. Now in his early 80s, he got his start studying abstract painting at the Brooklyn Museum Art School. “I had a good time there, but really didn’t know what I was doing, so I went into Realism,” he recalled. Before attending the Art Students’ League, Berman studied privately with “American Rembrandt” David Leffel. He later found out that the $10 lessons he took from Leffel made a big difference to the struggling artist in the ’60s. “He was broke. At the time it never dawned on me,” Berman said. Berman didn’t quite fit the “starving” artist stereotype of his peers. A career union electrician, Berman studied art in the evenings. He often finished up his workday around 3:30 p.m. and then dedicated himself to his art from 5 p.m. until late. It was a grueling schedule. “That’s the way I worked for many years,” he said. At the League, Berman studied with other notables such as Daniel Greene, Ted Seth Jacobs and Gregg Kreutz, often sharing space in the famed Studio 7. “At the League it was wonderful,” Berman said. “Absolutely wonderful, like a different world. There are so many others I studied with. I was so fortunate. I learned so much over the years.” “I was fairly successful there,” Berman said of the New York arts scene. “I used to go to the Greenwich Village semi-annual outdoor art show where hundreds of thousands of people go by.” Berman’s paintings ended up in collections in the U.S., Europe, Asia and South America. He is even a former artist-in-residence at the prestigious Salmagundi Club Center for American Art. When Berman retired in 1992, he decided to leave the big city living behind and move to Corvallis. “Going to my studio was very hectic,” Berman recalled. At times it could take several hours for him to commute from his home in Brooklyn to his studio in Manhattan. “I love it here,” Berman said of Corvallis. “You know, it’s strange, when I lived in New York I used to average one headache a week.” Berman and his wife, Regina, an artist in her own right, have a home and art studio on Butterfield Place. His children, four sons and a daughter, still live back East. She has one son still living in New York and one in Oregon. Berman also teaches private painting lessons at his home studio. “Most people, when they start, they don’t realize that you really have to get into it; have a critical eye,” Berman said. “In portraiture, there is no lines. Only less light or more light.” While small-town life may have cleared Berman’s head, it has presented a few other challenges. “My style is not what they are used to (out here),” Berman said. “Some of my work isn’t exactly what you call ‘pretty.’” Berman’s candid portraits, including many of local residents, were first displayed at Pegasus Gallery in Corvallis. Berman has been represented by the former George Broderick Gallery in Lake Oswego and Forrest Temple Gallery in Corvallis, where he was the resident artist for six years. Since those two galleries have closed down, his work has found a home at Opus6ix Gallery in Eugene and Art Talks in Westport, Wash. “Since the recession had put most of the art galleries I was affiliated with out of business, I decided to make a portfolio of my work to send to selected galleries around the country,” Berman said. Last year, Berman hired Don Ferguson at Shadowsmith Photographers to create photo reproductions of his paintings. He then took the portfolio to Nicholas Olson and Vy Hang at SP&B Reprographics to make duplicate copies for distribution. When he went to pick up the duplicates Berman got quite the surprise. Olson had created a striking art book made from 73 of Berman’s paintings. Copies of that book are available for sale at Grass Roots Books & Music and Pegasus Gallery in Corvallis. The surprise didn’t end there. Berman’s union (Local Union No. 3 IBEW) holds an annual art show in New York that Berman has participated in over the years. “I got a call from them,” he said. “This year, they decided to give a copy of the book to every artist in the show.” That’s more than 100 copies. One of Berman’s latest projects is painting street scenes in Corvallis. After years of painting New York street scenes, “I want to become a Corvallis painter,” he said.2 |
