| There is no direct evidence that Richard had a son John, but there is an unattached John York in the Wakefield, N.H. area at the same time Richard is there with another Richard and a Nicholas who are probably other sons of his. So it seems plausible that the John York of Wakefield is also his son. A John York signed the Association Test in Wakefield in 1776, along with both Richards. [Wakefield Association Test, original document at NH State Archives] Wakefield Town Records [1:48] include a reference to "Mr. John York's land" in the description of the bounds of a roadway on 3 Nov 1779. But another record seems to indicate the presence of two John Yorks in Wakefield at this time. At the Wakefield Town Meeting on 16 Mar 1781 the previous year's taxes for John York Jr. in the amount of 10 pounds, 10 shillings and 10 pence were abated. [Wakefield Town Records [1:60]. They were the only two references to a John York in the early Wakefield town records as indexed in the "Sargent" index to these records.
The names of John York and John York Jr. also appear over the border in neighboring Shapleigh, Maine in a local census of the town's first settlers that was taken in July 1778. [Loring, Amasa. A History of Shapleigh (Portland: B. Thurston, 1854), p.19] This could be an entirely different branch of the family, or it could be the same two Johns being recorded roughly about the same time in both town. But that still begs the question of who the second John is. Much more research is necessary. No further record of either John has yet been located in either location.
If he did spend time in the Wakefield or Shapleigh area he was likely back living in Brentwood as early as March 1783 when on the 28th of that month a John York of Brentwood, husbandman, sued Samuel Chapman of Wakefield, husbandman, for 20 pounds to recover money owed to him on a note signed by Chapman at Durham on 10 May 1781. [Strafford Co. Superior Court case 1783-130]
He is probably the John York who appears in the 1790 census of Brentwood. This census entry was listed last in the Brentwood enumeration and there were 2 males over 16, 2 under 16, and 3 females. This sounds like a relatively young family so it more likely to be this John than his uncle John. There is no John York to be found in the 1790 census in the Wakefield/Shapleigh area. The John York in nearby Middleton is a different family.
There is no John York in the 1800 census in the Brentwood or Epping area (or in Wakefield/Shapleigh) that could be him, but there is a John York aged over 45 years old enumerated in Monmouth, Maine, where another York who is likely his brother - Joseph - shows up in the 1810 census. This would give a reason for our John to be way up in Monmouth in 1800. In that census the family had 2 males age 10-15, 1 male 45 and over, 1 female 10-15, 2 females 16-25, and one female 45 and over. It roughly correlates with the John York enumerated in Brentwood 10 years earlier.
There is also record of a John York who was warned out of the town of Brentwood on 30 Jun 1800. [Rockingham County Superior Court File #19247] This could be him, his uncle, or a cousin. It is impossible to know for sure, but it could also explain why he went to Monmouth if that is indeed him there.
Finally it should be noted that it's possible that this John is really a son of the uncle John and not of John's brother Richard. That uncle John does have a son John Carr York attached to him, but that person might belong to a different family entirely. There is great confusion over this particular family of Yorks from the Exeter/Brentwood/Epping area due to a lack of records. |

Mr. Cutler between 1748 and 1754. Assuming all names were listed in chronological order, her coming third among the Yorks, following her brothers Nathaniel Folsom York and John York, would suggest a 1753 birth.
